Reviews

9.7 Blenheim House Care Centre has a Review Score of 9.7 (9.712)

The Review Score of 9.7 (maximum of 10) for Blenheim House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 41 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Blenheim House Care Centre in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.712 for Blenheim House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (377 Excellents x 5) + (84 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 482 Ratings = 4.712

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Blenheim House Care Centre is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 17 positive Reviews (85 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 22 Reviews ÷ 17 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

When we arrived four or five staff greeted my husband and said "Welcome Back" (his second stay). He was well looked after and a carer helped with his morning showers. I had lunch with him on the day he arrived and on the day after I returned from a short holiday and enjoyed an excellent well presented lunch on each occasion. I appreciate his chance of a break in such attractive surroundings as caring can be tiring when one is 86.

My mother-in-law was a resident for 2 weeks. She was treated with respect and kindness and whenever we visited, we were treated likewise. Our mother-in-law (who is a very independent lady aged 92) was always looked after, enjoyed numerous activities, had a lovely room which enabled us to have a break and know that she was in a safe, caring environment. Thank you to all the staff concerned.

I have found the care and attention that we have received for my mum as excellent. All the staff are caring and compassionate. Beautiful outdoor space and a coffee shop for relatives to use and this has been wonderful. Also giving us lunch and nothing is too much trouble. If you need to go into a care home, this is going to be the best you are going to get! Only one thing that the toilet is not working in the bedroom and there is horrible limescale in the toilet.

My father moved into Blenheim House in May and passed away mid-August. His stay was much shorter than I anticipated but it was long enough for me to form a very positive impression of the care centre. It has beautiful gardens, delicious food, light and airy rooms and varied activities, but it is the attitude of the staff that so impressed me. Dad had a room on Clover Street, the Dementia floor, and was very frail and vulnerable; the staff were wonderful with him, showing such compassion and understanding and he had settled well. During the last week of his life he was receiving end of life care which was very distressing for the whole family, but once again the staff were wonderful; Mum was able to sit with him and they extended their support and understanding to her during that sad time. It is impossible to fully express my gratitude, thank you all so much; you are exceptional people and it has been my privilege to meet you all and watch you doing such wonderful work.

When the time comes for a parent to go into a care home, it's not an easy time. Finding somewhere like Blenheim House has made that transition the best for mum that it could possibly have been.
Aesthetically beautiful, bright and airy. It's not what you normally think of when using the words "care home". However, it's the staff and quality of care that makes Blenheim absolutely fantastic. Always smiling, always going the extra mile to make mum as settled and safe as she could be. I am so grateful mum is in such a great home.

Thank you so much for your kind words, it's a pleasure looking after dad and it's great to hear you are always made to feel welcome. We are one big family here at Blenheim House.

Mum was very poorly when she came to Blenheim House after having a nasty fall in August. The staff were wonderful. Very caring and attentive to her every need. Unfortunately, she was bedridden and couldn't use her hands. I can't fault any of the staff. We always had a lovely welcome and were treated as friends. Wonderful food and great facilities. Would highly recommend Blenheim House.

Thank you for your very kind words, we are truly sorry for your loss Barrie. If you or your family need anything please don't hesitate to ask and our door is always open.

My mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's two years ago and had a couple of traumatic moves before we found Blenheim House by recommendation. From the moment we arrived my mother, husband and myself were treated with the utmost care, consideration and compassion - nothing was too much trouble. This is the overwhelming theme of Blenheim House, nothing is too much for any of the lovely staff working there, whatever their job. My mother is physically very fit, and wants to walk most of the day so the beautifully designed and maintained gardens and the spacious interior are perfect for her. When relatives have travelled from afar, Blenheim has put aside a private room and provided the most wonderful meal so we could all give Mum as happy a time as she possibly could have. My heartfelt thanks to the amazing chef, manager and other staff for making this happen for Mum. As a relative it is important to know your loved one is safe, happy and well cared for. Blenheim provides everything.

I cannot thank all the staff for their love and care for my father, especially during the last few days of his life and I could not have wished him to be in a better place. They not only cared for him as they would have done for their own family, but the level of care shown for myself and the rest of the family during this time was excellent.

My wife spent her last few weeks at this centre. She had serious physical problems and her mental capacity was severely affected by her medical drugs. At all times the centre staff did their best to maintain her dignity and comfort level. They exhibited a high level of personal involvement and concern.
At all times I and other visitors were given as much help as possible and always made very welcome to her bedside.
I thank all the care and nursing staff for their determined effort to my wife's last days as peaceful and as dignified as possible.

Thank you very much for your kind words, I will pass on your message to the team. If you ever need anything you know where we are our door is always open.

We, as a family, moved our loved one into this nursing home to be closer to us all and from the moment we stepped in, without prior appointment, through the doors we were welcomed warmly and shown around the premises. We met staff and residents who were all very relaxed and friendly. The rooms are all spacious en-suite and adorned with resident's own personal effects. The carers are all very professional and help each other when needed. Great efforts are made to preserve dignity at all times for residents. Dietary requirements are an important requirement. Medication is strictly adhered to and monitored by qualified nurses on each floor 24/7. This is more like a retirement village than a nursing home. a lost of thought has gone into providing a beautiful home for the whole family. Even a cinema where visiting children can view a movie/library/hairdressing salon etc is available. Beautiful gardens overlooking farmland lend to a peaceful environment. Activities and trips out locally are enjoyed, weather permitting, for those who are able to join in. Management always available to help. This is indeed a gem of a find and we are delighted with all aspects of care.

Since my father has arrived at Blenheim House Care Centre, he has gained in both mental and physical health. His walking has improved dramatically, so much so he doesn't even need a walking stick! He could hardly talk when he first came here, now he can string a sentence together. My father's health improvement is a direct result of the outstanding care of this home. Thank you and God bless.

Steve Oakes, Director at Blenheim House Care Centre responded to this review on 13 Oct 2016:

Thank you for the really positive review, I am glad our team excelled and you and your husband enjoyed our facilities.

After a rather shaky start, greeted by 'are you the new bag lady?' ...'no I'm a patient' ... 'well, you need to go to the 2nd floor'. I went up, found a person who showed me my room and was left alone to unpack etc. feeling very weak after a major cancer operation less than 48 hours before. Not a good start. Things improved markedly when my circumstances were realised. From then on I cannot fault the care I had from all the staff. They could not do enough for me, including accompanying me every weekday to the hospital for radiotherapy during my 3-month stay. The food was good, a variety with the odd 'treats' which were much appreciated. Cleaning ok, sometimes bed making etc was done very late in the morning - understandable as I do need nursing care and other patients were very demanding taking up a lot of time.

I am sorry that your admission was not to our usual standards, this has been internally reviewed and our customer service team has also been augmented. I am pleased that you have been happy with your experience thereafter and that our staff have excelled and fully supported you during your residence with us.

Overall an excellent facility. Some issues with the timing of medication being applied and laundry being lost but overall an excellent service and level of care is provided. We made a very good choice for my Mum with Blenheim House. Cost is high but probably set right for level for care and facilities.

Thank you for your positive feedback

My husband has been in Blenheim House Care Centre since July 2015. He has always been treated with the utmost respect for all his personal and nursing needs. The home always keeps me informed if he falls poorly or requires anything. As a family, we are always welcome into the home and have attended many of the functions the home run, also the regular relative meets.

Thank you for your review Jane, I am glad that you and your family enjoy our functions and facilities.

I am only in about twice a month but I always feel comfortable bringing my young children in to visit. The cafe area is really nice to bring them to. I really like the activities for visits which consist of fireworks evening, coffee mornings, xmas fayre etc.

My father-in-law would often be left unclean, unwashed and in old clothes. They didn't accommodate to his personal needs and he was often left with no one to talk to. There were a few incidences where staff shouted and upset my father-in-law. They lost his false teeth, TV remote, clothes, and other things. When we questioned the staff about him they were rude, unaccommodating and acted as though all the issues either weren't a problem or as though it wasn't their fault.
They shrunk his designer jumper and when questioned about it, pretended it was in the wash for months hoping we would forget about it when in actual fact they didn't want to tell us they had ruined it. We took all our issues up with the manager who was awful and patronising. We moved our father-in-law to another home where he was much happier and the staff were wonderful.

Angela Boxall, Head of Operations at Blenheim House Care Centre responded to this review on 13 Sep 2016:

Thank you to the family for taking the time to provide feedback, which we always truly value.

I accept that back at the time to which the comments relate, February 2016, there were shortcomings in this gentleman’s care and in the way that the family’s concerns were initially handled. As with any concerns raised, we take these very seriously and seek to improve by listening and reflecting on all feedback provided. I subsequently investigated this matter myself, met with the family and provided a formal response.

As part of the continued development of the home, a new manager was appointed and we are confident that the care and hospitality services being delivered to our residents have been enhanced.

I am pleased to announce that the progress achieved by Blenheim House has been recognised by the CQC and we have received an overall ‘Good’ rating relating to their recent inspection.

We are always pleased to welcome visitors to Blenheim House and are confident that you will find an approachable and motivated team with happy residents.

The Chefs worked very hard and beautiful food on Saturday 18th June, both good teamwork. Nicest food I have had for a long time (jacket potato, burgers, steak, good team and all the carers on were fantastic too).

My father was only at Blenheim House for a very short time but from the start he was treated as a valued friend. It didn't take him long to settle in and enjoy being looked after so well. The rooms and facilities are wonderful but the staff, including those behind the scenes are the real gems. In the last week of his life the care given to dad was given with care, compassion and respect. This care and that shown to all the family, especially me, made the last days much easier to bear.

My husband has been in this home since last June. He has dementia. He can be very demanding and has been confrontational. His care has been exemplary since he arrived on the unit. He is well cared for and happy. The staff are well-trained, patient and kind.
The atmosphere is warm, relaxed and friendly. The chef there is a wonderful cook, but more importantly he is a genuine friend to all the residents, showing empathy and patience in his contacts, not just to the residents, but to the friends and relatives when they come to visit!! Well done.

My aunt was only resident for three weeks, having moved from another nursing home. The atmosphere at Blenheim House is calm and caring. The staff are welcoming and my aunt was treated with care and compassion as were we. Her end of life was managed as we hoped and she died peacefully with a staff member in attendance.

My mother began at Blenheim House in August 2014. She has settled in remarkably well as a result of the excellent care she has experienced and combined with the wonderful environment she finds herself in. She has been able to walk in the garden which is such a fundamental part of her life. She enjoys a beautiful room and good food. The staff are exceptional always giving as much time as possible to her needs. She is a fiercely independent woman and they have recognised that and showed it whenever possible.

Blenheim House and staff would have been given excellent in almost every category bar for one or two small issues. i.e laundry care, personal belongings going astray from the laundry, not all the time but on the odd occasion. The odd request of furniture repair takes a long time to action on occasions, but staff always seem flat out so it's understandable. The kindness of staff is second to none, the rooms are lovely, sometimes could be cleaner in the corners! Meals more suitable to those with great teeth/dentures (softer very and chewable meat for us oldies) but great menus otherwise. Lovely people, lovely place.

My husband was only 45 when diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2010. Blenheim House took care of him for the last weeks of his life and I cannot fault them for the love and support they gave to both my husband and myself. The staff genuinely care. They love the work they do and were all visibly upset by his passing. Although my husband was living in Clover Meadows, the floor predominantly for Alzheimer's residents, the staff did everything possible to give him 24 hour care and adjust to his needs and keep him safe. You cannot help but worry yourself sick when a loved one is terminally ill and away from home but staff encouraged me to stay with him overnight for his final week, which I did and I will always be so grateful to them as I know it made a difference to us both being able to sleep in the same room and to be with him as he passed away. Blenheim House feels more like a 5 star hotel than a nursing home. Although a private facility, thanks to his Consultant Oncologist, he was able to stay there as an NHS patient and received the same high level of care and patience as all the other residents. You are encouraged to voice any concerns you may have and it is always met with enthusiasm and understanding and not least of all personal adjustments. Any incidents that may occur are reported to the next of kin without delay. Visiting time is up to the individual - I practically lived there but when I could not be there, a member of staff was checking on him every 15 minutes and sometimes all day. I love you very much Blenheim and will never forget what you did for us xx

Job Title: Head of Memory and Lifestyle Care

Description:

I was born in Congleton Cheshire, the second of four children.

Dad was in the air force and later an engineer for BA and mum was the deputy head of the local primary school. We were a close family, and did lots of things together, and I always loved our family holidays to Cornwall, Scotland and Devon. Christmas was a magical time in our family, with some lovely traditions which I later continued with my own family.

I left home at 18 to do my nurse training at the Manchester royal infirmary, married a Manchester lad, and worked in neurosciences for 21 years until I moved back to Stoke on Trent with my four children in 2001.

After moving to Stoke on Trent, I worked as a manager in care, working for Majesticare for nine years and studying dementia studies at Bradford university. More recently I became the UK head of dementia care for Sunrise, before returning to Majesticare this year in my current role.

I have a son Dan, and three daughters Jen, Lulu and Sophie and 4 beautiful grandchildren, Alex, Dominic, Gracie and Reuben. We all live nearby and are a very close family. There is always something going on in my family, and the latest drama was that Reuben was born in the passenger seat of my car on the way to hospital, and I delivered him! I now live in Congleton, where I was born, with my partner Emmanuel and our mad spaniel Max.

Adrian is our Maintenance man who will help you in any way possible to rectify the problem. Adrian looks after all the facilities in our home ensuring the building is safe and secure. Adrian has been working at Blenheim House since April 2016. He started working in care in 2012 and saw an opportunity to work for Majesticare at Blenheim House as our maintenance man and he has not looked back since. Adrian was in the army for 22 years before starting a new career in care which he enjoys immensely.

When I was in the army I did a number of jobs such as driving tanks and lorries for a while, then I worked in the family office looking after new and old families getting posted in and out of the regiment. I went in to the stores for four years then I went to Bovington, the British Tank Museum for another four years looking after the soldiers who were on courses. I was in charge on two buildings worth over 2 million pounds each. I spent over 17 years in Germany whilst I was in the army. When I completed my army service, I did care in the community working in domiciliary care for four years, as a community staff supervisor, looking after the staff and clients. I really enjoyed the job then I had the opportunity to become the maintenance man at Blenheim, which enabled me to still see and talk to the residents which I enjoy, especially listening to the men who were in the forces, I could listen to them all day long. I love my job, it is different every day.

After training in performing arts and events management I have been lucky enough to work creatively with older people for the last ten years in a variety of different settings. My passion is in enabling older people to led fulfilling, active and varied lives, where age is not a barrier.

I worked for a number of years developing and building up a vibrant, exciting leisure and lifestyle programme for a group of care homes in Bath and Bristol. This enabled me to see the profound effect creativity and social engagement can have for older people living in care.

For two years I ran my own business ‘The Cat's Whiskers Tea Dance Company' which specialised in providing interactive, professional entertainment for those in care. We spent a lot of time reminiscing with Residents and I was privileged to hear a lot of incredible, moving stories that reinforced my belief in the importance of creativity in care settings.

Job Title: Residential Manager

Description:

I started off in the care sector aged sixteen, attending Chippenham College and successfully completing a GNVQ in Health and Social Care. It became clear to me that caring for people was something I was passionate about and this then led me to enrol in a degree in mental health nursing at UWE in Bristol. I was a stone’s throw away from being fully qualified when I realised that mental health nursing wasn’t the career that I originally thought I wanted, so I made the hard decision to leave and decided to go back into the NHS.

I worked for many happy years at Chippenham Hospital as a Nursing Auxiliary and I thoroughly enjoyed it but decided that I would like to try something different and was offered a job in a care home, something which was very different to what I was used to.
Since this time, I have worked in the community but my heart has always been in the care home industry.

I have been at Blenheim House for three and a half years, starting as a care assistant. I have worked my way up to the Residential Manager’s post which I feel is my biggest achievement besides having my three beautiful children.

It’s a challenging but very rewarding role and each day is very different. The residents are an extended part of my family and each one receives the person-centred care that they deserve. This is something the staff at Blenheim House very much believe in as our residents are always our main priority.

The support I have received throughout my time at Blenheim House from my team on the Residential floor, the residents and their families have been overwhelming.
Blenheim House is where my heart belongs.

Job Title: Deputy Manager

Description:

I qualified as a Nurse a little over 5 years ago from the University of the West of England and following this my journey has been one that has shaped the choices I’ve made on my career path.
As a child, I had envisaged myself becoming a midwife and this was the route I was going down until during my training in adult nursing I felt the unforgettable rewards in working with older people. I saw how the little things make a huge difference to those in need of assistance as they get older and decided that I would continue on this path instead.
Once qualified I had hoped to work in a hospital setting but due to the politics of nursing I had to reconsider and began my career in a nursing home in Swindon. This setting again changed my chosen career path as I now saw that the difference between hospital settings and nursing home settings was even more rewarding and the differences that could be made by myself for these people I was caring for was even greater.
My career has seen me progress within the community setting from a fresh-faced nurse to the position I am now and I feel that this is due to my passion for making a difference, challenging practice when I feel needed and keeping a bubbly, smiling and homely attitude towards the environment I work within.
My outlook within care settings in the community is that we, the staff, are working within our resident’s homes, we are privileged to be trusted with such intimate and difficult tasks towards the latter stages of people’s lives. Making these people feel comfortable, cared for and fulfilled daily is what makes a difference to their happiness. Listening to their thoughts, concerns and giving their families support makes a difference and offers such fabulous rewards and I couldn’t wish for a better career path than that.
