We did not have a good experience and have moved Mum to another home. We found communication lacking and attention to issues like looking after clothing and making sure Mum was wearing her own clothes and that her clothing was clean we’re not adhered to. We weren’t able to personalise her room due to Covid but sent pictures in which we’re not put up for her.

Reply from Faye Gailey, Home Manager at St Giles Care Home - Avery Healthcare

Thank you for taking the time to review St Giles Care Home. I would like to apologise that the level of communication from St Giles was not up to our usual standard. I shall take this on board to ensure that family members receive a better level of communication moving forward. We are sorry that...

My referral to come from the hospital was for physiotherapy rehabilitation. With this objective doing focus, I came away feeling satisfied this was achieved. Also, the domestic care aspects were totally satisfactory.

My wife had some respite on the ground floor at St Giles. She had bad feet and could not walk and the nurses made them better I could not believe the difference. They always put her on the phone to me. Such a nice thing to know your wife is safe and getting better.
The staff are so kind she said. We just could not visit that was the sad thing.

Big thanks to St Giles and the one in charge was really caring my wife said bless you all.

Mum became a resident at St Giles following a spell of respite. The staff were supportive and friendly. The wellbeing team provided a good range of activities, including crafts, bingo and special events such as VE Day. Staff kept me updated about mum’s health and any issues. Mum loved her own room, which we were able to personalise. She had her TV/music, colouring, and her cuddles around her. Her room was kept clean and tidy, clothes and named (if you pay for the service). Always a good choice of food depending on the resident’s needs, including soft foods or build-up drinks if required. Before Covid a hairdresser and chiropodist would visit weekly and GP as and when required. Sadly Mum passed away on the 4th of April 21. I was grateful to the care staff that they were with her at the end, and she was not alone. They notified me straight away and kept me updated. Thank you to the manager and all the staff team for the continuing support and care of Mum whilst with them.

My mum came for some rehab, and I was so worried as she had lost weight in the hospital. She stayed on the ground floor, and the staff were so brilliant. Phones were busy, and it can be frustrating, but they did their best. Mum loved the food and put a bit of weight on.
Mum said the nurses were so sweet and caring.
I really had to post a review to say how grateful we are.
Some of her laundries were lost, but who cares when our mom is home and smiling again!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

I myself being the POA for a friend made the decision for a friend to be admitted to St Giles from the Hospital. This being as her home was not suitable to go back to. The hospital had called and wanted her discharged.

Due to Covid, no visits were made to the hospital. Admission to the hospital the 10th of October. Admission to St Giles 11th of November. St Giles picked due to good reviews on the website and being near for visits. The only contact was through phone until the 20th of December. I did speak to my friend through speakerphone which depended on what member of staff answered on the care home phone. I had supplied a mobile phone but often it was not charged. I did not see my friend till 20th December and was devastated to see how she was as the last time I saw her was 10th October prior to admission to the hospital. The staff at St Giles said they only knew her as she was on admission.

What a lovely place.
My mom was admitted for respite and rehab post-surgery.
The physio team are so brilliant and gave her the confidence to progress.
The nurses and care staff are so lovely and always tried to do their best given the awful Covid crisis.
I only have admiration for how hard they work.
My mom would love to revisit the home to say thanks to the amazing staff.

Thank you so much, St Giles, we are eternally great full.

My husband was at St Giles for some rehab; we were so pleased getting the call that he was out of the hospital. He wanted me to say thanks to the staff for their hard work during such difficult times.
The food was lovely, he said.
No words to express how amazing St Giles staff are.

Big thanks to the manager of the home, who was very helpful.

Do not send your loved ones here. My father-in-law moved here from the hospital for some TLC before eventually moving to a care home. The communication to us as a family has been non-existent, there is no care plan or rehabilitation plan for him and his zest and spark for life has been lost. I wish I had read the reviews before sending him here. My Grandpa went into a community hospital for some rehabilitation with learning to walk again and the care and motivation he received was outstanding, which is why we have really tried to help my father-in-law learn to walk again after a four-week immobile stay in hospital. After three weeks, he has been helped to stand up for 15 seconds each day, and that is all.

It is disappointing to hear that you feel this way towards our home. I would like to reassure you that I have shared the concerns raised with the staff team, who have investigated further with the resident in question; he has expressed that his feelings towards the care he has received are quite the opposite and the fact that he would like to stay at St Giles where he feels safe. Best wishes.

My father was admitted to the home for respite care from the hospital. Although the team tried, he did not have the strength to walk again, but the staff were completely amazing and gave him the best care ever. At such a difficult time, during Covid, the staff still tried to care for my dad in isolation. This home is amazing, and at times, we could not get through on the phone, we were always given the heads up how he was.

A big thanks from me and Dad.

My Dad was taken to St Giles, Tile Cross from the hospital for respite. During his stay, my Dad was unable to find his teeth, glasses or hearing aids. We asked staff to look in his bag and were told they were lost and probably left at the hospital. So my Dad couldn't hear, see or eat properly. We would call, it was a struggle to speak to him. He rarely had help with his phone. He had no TV or stimulation whatsoever. He was on his own in his room all day every day. He became severely depressed and his mental health has deteriorated significantly. He was sent back to the hospital two weeks ago and we were asked to collect his things from St Giles today. His clothes (many of which were missing - brand new Christmas Presents) were in a black bag, soaked in urine with mildew growing on them. His glasses, teeth and hearing aids still in his holdall where nobody had bothered to look. We are disgusted, angry and upset. My mom has cried and cried over the complete lack of care or empathy at St Giles.

My terminally ill Grandad was a resident at St Giles and has recently had to be moved to a different home. Unfortunately, due to covid, his family were not able to visit him whilst he was staying there. To try and keep in touch with him and keep his spirits up as much as possible, we took in his personal mobile phone that he could use. Every time we spoke to him on it, he was very distressed, emotional and expressed how badly he was being treated whilst being there. This was very out of character for my Grandad as he has always been an upbeat, happy character so to hear him in such distress was very upsetting and worrying. Not long after we had dropped his phone to the home, we were told it was 'lost' and that nobody could find it so we were unable to speak to him any longer unless we contacted the home directly. We did this, to then be hung up on before getting to speak to him which I think is very unprofessional and rude. I would not recommend sending your loved ones to this home.

My Uncle has been residing at St. Giles for one year now and we have seen him flourish under the care of the wonderful staff and management at St. Giles. There is a lovely atmosphere when you enter the home and we don't have to worry about him as we know he is looked after 24/7, having freshly laundered clothes daily and a shower, plus a cooked breakfast and all his meals and drinks provided. We have found all the staff very friendly and caring. However, pushed for time they always have a friendly word for all the residents as they pass their rooms. The wellbeing team put on various activities throughout the week and take the residents out into the garden, weather permitting.

We are very satisfied with the care he is receiving.

During COVID-19, the staff organised a VE Day celebration for the residents. Everything was set up giving residents, their families and staff the safe distancing zones. Residents came out in their red, whites and blues and the smiles on their faces when they could blow kisses to loved ones will give them happy memories to cherish a lifetime.

My mom and myself have struggled with the transition from our home but I cannot fault them. She is well-loved and cared for and we are both content with her living at St Giles.
