The Orchards Care Home, a purpose-built setting situated in the popular residential area of Shard End, east of Birmingham, provides personalised nursing and nursing dementia care to older people.

With welcoming sitting rooms, spacious dining areas and en suite bedrooms, the home has been designed and furnished to offer residents a true home from home. The on site salon and cinema provide the opportunity to relax and enjoy a favourite film, whilst for green-fingered residents, the courtyard garden is the perfect space to flex those gardening skills and reap the rewards of their hard work.

With a focus on personalised care and support, the team at The Orchards design life around residents, getting to know each person so that they can offer a lifestyle that's as engaging as it is relaxing. My mother-in-law stayed at The Orchards as a temporary resident during September and October 2018. The staff were really excellent, having nursed her back to health, she has returned home but definitely misses them. The facilities and food are very good, with lots of activities and a great little hairdressers
- as nursing homes go its one of the best there is.

My late mother received end of life care for seven weeks at The Orchards. I cannot praise the staff enough, they treated my mother with dignity at all times even when her end was near. Everyone who works at The Orchards are dedicated to their particular job role, always friendly and chatty. I cannot
find fault with this nursing home and are glad that my mother received her end of life care at this home.

At 93 years young, my dad fractured his hip. He stayed at The Orchards for four weeks rehab, following his fall. The staff were kind, friendly and most helpful during Dad's recovery time.
The facilities at The Orchards are very good, with lounge TV areas, activities and garden facilities.
From the
management, nursing or care staff, I give full marks. Thank you, everyone.
A special thank you to the physio, who encouraged Dad and gave him confidence whilst walking.

There are too few carers on at a weekend and the ones that are on are run off their feet. There are never any management on so it feels as if they are not interested in the welfare of both staff and residents. I do not wish to go to the CQC but I will if I feel people's lives are at risk. Do not take
it out on the carers who are really kind.

Thank you for your comments. The Home Manager works long hours during the week and visits the Home some weekends. She noted that you appeared to have been enjoying the sunshine with your Mother in the courtyard garden on your recent visit on Sunday and did not want to disturb you as you both looked as if you were enjoying some time together. The Deputy Manager also works alternative weekends at the Home, and the EAB Manager works at least once a month at weekends. Please do approach them during your visits if you have any concerns and they will be happy to help. It is unfortunate that you were not made aware that the Management team are in the Home when you visit. A staff ratio of 1 to 4.5 is the average staffing at weekends, and the ratio is often 1 staff to 4 Residents – above establishment hours. We revisit and reassess our Residents level of needs regularly in order to ensure the staffing levels are appropriate. Unfortunately there are times for example, when colleagues are ill where the Home works to establishment hours. The staffing levels were reviewed at a recent CQC inspection and no concerns were raised in relation to colleague availability. I am glad that you find colleagues kind, and it is noted that no specific concerns have been brought to the attention of colleagues directly at the Home, either verbally or in writing. If you have any concerns whatsoever on any day that you visit please raise them with Management or the Nursing Team.

Our mother was a resident in The Orchards for just three weeks and although the location was difficult for the family, we came to appreciate the care and support she received at a time when her problems were escalating and she was approaching the end of her life. The manager and her team treated her
with great respect and in the 24 hours before her death, every member of staff from the most junior to the most senior was sensitive, kind and attentive to her and her family. She could not have had a more peaceful or dignified death.

Staff and care are amazing, nothing is too much trouble. Our mum was placed at The Orchards for a 4-6 week assessment. We looked for another nursing home after this period only because the location was difficult for family to commute to and from. However, after looking at other homes we agreed that
the extra travelling was well worthwhile because of the excellent care our mum has received. We are very happy that mum is now a permanent resident and she is happy and settled.

The carers were magic the staff and the activities staff. The management very poor! I asked to see the manager 3-4 times but not successful. I thought a visit to every room (cell) just to say "everything all right but NO why?

Thank you for your comments and I am pleased to note that you thought that the staff were magic. The management team co-ordinated activities for you such as going to the pub for a meal, on an individual basis with the well-being co-ordinator and we are happy that you enjoyed it so much that you asked to go out again with the staff, after you had left the Home. The Home Manager and the Deputy Manager regularly walk around the Home and spent time with yourself on numerous occasions. I understand that you believe that you did not receive any physiotherapy whilst at the nursing home on an EAB basis, however, it does appear that you were offered this service and decided not to follow their instructions.

Our first visit to Orchards to visit our friend was pleasurable, to say the least. All the staff were most courteous and helpful, the place was spotless. This reflected on the people in care, there was a very happy and friendly atmosphere amongst them. I was so impressed, on signing out I actually asked
the receptionist for this form.

My mother-in-law has been here since September 2017 and became a resident in November 2017. Since being here, she has been very well looked after and has been very happy. The care she is given is excellent. All members of staff are very caring which gives our family peace of mind to know she is safe
and well cared for. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Orchards care home.

What does ‘kindness’ mean to you?


“For me, kind care is going above and beyond for all Residents and listening to their individual needs.”


As a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Simon has gained a wealth of experience in providing care and nursing support to elderly people, to enrich their lives. He is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards in care and quality of life for Residents


Having joined The Orchards as Home Manager, Simon closely shares HC-One’s vision in aiming to provide the kindest care for and every Resident. He extends this caring approach to his Colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support in a way that Residents gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


He also works hard to arrange events and activities with nearby nurseries, schools and clubs and is always keen to include the local community in life at The Orchards.


When asked what he enjoys most about his role, Simon remarked:


“It means the world to me to see a smile on a Resident’s face, making them happy and helping to enhance their lives is the best feeling.”


Outside of work, Simon enjoys spending quality time with his friends and family, especially as he has seven siblings and 18 nieces and nephews. He also enjoys travelling abroad regularly and seeing new places.
