Someone living with our definition of "mild dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Memory problems such as misplacing items and not be able to recall recent events (however, in some forms of dementia a person's memory may be unchanged)
- Difficulties thinking through problems and planning, making decisions
- Language and communication issues such as finding it difficult to recall the appropriate word in a conversation or following a conversation
- Poor orientation, getting lost in areas previously familiar to them
- Difficulty judging distances (more falls than usual)
- Changes in their normal mood including anxiety and depression
- In certain types of dementia, personality and behaviour changes may be present alongside or instead of issues with memory or concentration.
Moderate Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "moderate dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Worsened memory problems. Not always recognising own family members and friends. Repeating the same questions over and over again
- Worsened language and communication issues, forgetting what they are saying mid-sentence. Not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- More frequent confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Advanced Dementia
Someone living with our definition of "severe dementia" might experience some or all of the following:
- Severe memory problems. Not recognising family members and friends. Not being able to recall their own name
- Severe language and communication issues, not being able to understand what someone else is saying
- Severe confusion, e.g. about the time of day or where they are, including their own home
- Apathy, depression and anxiety
- Believing things that aren't true (paranoia)
- Frequent hallucinations
- Lack of emotional control, quick to anger, fearfulness, sadness
- Loss of inhibition
- Difficulties sleeping or waking during the night and behaving as though it is daytime - loss of circadian rhythm.
Verbally or physically aggressive behaviour
If your loved one displays this type of behaviour you may need a care home that has specially trained staff. Verbal/physical aggression is often defined:
- Consistent shouting and screaming
- Verbal abuse
- Physical abuse

Overall Experience
I visit the care home every day. I am always welcomed by the staff, not only that, they even ask me if I want a cup of tea, coffee or cold drink. My wife's room is always clean. They provide the required service to my wife regularly as she is fully dependent on the staff. She is unable to communicate. I am very pleased with the service they are providing. Care home gives me peace of mind my wife is in safe hands.

Overall Experience
I have seen major improvements since the change of ownership. The whole environment has changed for the good. I am always welcomed when visiting my relative. The matron is very friendly and approachable so it is very easy to raise any concerns with the management. I am now kept informed about any issues with my relative and what is being done to sort them out.

Overall Experience
It was hard to face knowing my dad needed to be placed into a care home but the transition was made so easily thanks to the management and staff. The care that my dad is receiving is second to none. The home is clean, pleasant and bright. The food looks amazing. I can honestly say I do not class the staff (from cleaners to management) as people that care for my dad, they are more like my friends. I am so glad as a family, we chose this care home.

Overall Experience
Home is very clean and has a nurturing environment. The manager is extremely helpful and willing to support relatives to make changes that will benefit their loved ones. I would recommend this home, although there is still work to do. The management team is determined to push through improvements. Staff are always polite and friendly.

Overall Experience
I must say how lovely it is to walk into this care home and be welcomed with smiles and hello's by all the staff. My relative appears to be well cared for and happy at this home. Any suggestions or questions I ask are always answered by carers and the nursing team and I regularly meet with care home managers who are very welcoming, approachable and discuss my relative's needs and keep me updated with any issues, special needs and extra care measures that may be required. I must say I always feel that when I leave my relative that he is in good hands with nursing and carers looking after him. My children notice that the care home does not smell and that the staff always welcome them when they visit. The care home has undergone a recent change of ownership and I must say these changes are definitely making a positive impact on the care given to my father and other residents. Well done - keep up the good work in caring for these lovely characters who need specialist nursing care.
