The Lawns Nursing Home, in Kempsey, near Worcester, is an award-winning home with a reputation for the highest standards of care. Nominated for the Gold Standard Framework for provision of End of Life Care "Care Home of the Year" award in 2019, and in October 2022 reaccredited with the Platinum Award for the next 3 years.

The home opened a new purpose-built extension of 22 beds in late 2018 which caters for both residential and nursing residents as well as a recent extensive refurbishment of the Manor House which is the oldest part of the home. Staff believe the best way for you to find out more about the home is to speak to the resident ambassador, residents and their families, to read the reviews for the care that is provided and of course to come and visit the home, open any time.

Family values are important to The Lawns, and they pride themselves on providing a warm and friendly homely environment supporting both residents and their families. The lifestyle and well-being team are dedicated to providing a varied and full programme of events, ranging from individual beauty therapies to charity dog shows to themed weeks and evenings. They encourage independent living as much as possible, from being involved in the preparation of meals to getting out of the home where possible. Families are always welcome to also attend outings.

Care is delivered by a registered nursing team and long-serving care and ancillary teams.

The Lawns specialises in providing end-of-life care and has obtained Gold Standard Framework Platinum status in this speciality. They also care for younger adults with a range of conditions, including acquired brain injury and other neurological conditions.

My mother has been a resident at The Lawns for several weeks and we have no complaints. I would highly recommend The Lawns for anyone needing care. All the staff are helpful and friendly and my mother is well taken care of. She has digestive problems and severe food intolerances and they do their best
to accommodate this, a big difference to being in the hospital where she was literally starving to death.

Concern about nightdresses missing, new ones and seven in three years, not worn once.
The Lawns is in the middle of a make-over which is improving. The carpets need replacing (dirty).
Overall good.
Reply from Melanie Dawson, Manager at The LawnsThank you for completing the review - it comes as some surprise to me as no one has brought this to my attention in the last 14 months since I took over as manager.
Surprise that you have indicated these negative comments, as we have only just completed a full refurbishment of your sister's room where she was able to choose the work we completed and she would not have her carpet changed.
I would be more than happy to hear more in regard to the nightdress issue but I do not recall you bringing this to my attention. To get a clearer picture I will make contact with her next of kin to discuss any issues. Kind Regards.

On leaving hospital we were told no more could be done for my husband - wheelchair-bound and needing 2 carers to move him from bed to wheelchair to toilet etc.
The Lawns have now got him walking (with a zimmer frame) moving from bed to wheelchair etc on his own and able to attend to most of his daily
needs without help. He has learned to propel his wheelchair himself to move bigger distances. I am now planning for him to come back and live at home.
Reply from Melanie Dawson, Manager at The LawnsMany thanks for the review - every journey has a starting point and every success is to be celebrated.
I will pass on your kind words to the team - Melanie

Following a knee replacement, my mother needed a period of rehabilitation and the consultant, along with several friends recommended The Lawns. The admission process was very easy, so this helped minimise the stress. On the day she was taken to her room and told everything she needed to know. Staff
were very caring, only helping when needed to aid recovery. Nursing staff were diligent, food was excellent.

The love, care and compassion shown to our father in his last few weeks was outstanding. This comment applies, without exception, to every member of staff involved in caring for him and making sure he was comfortable at all times. Everyone went out of their way to make sure that we understood what
was happening with Dad and the care and support we received on his last day was amazing and made his death so much easier for us to cope with. We would all, without hesitation, recommend The Lawns to anyone looking for end of life care for a family member. Visitors are welcome at all times and are made to feel part of The Lawns family. The Lawns management staff and staff deserve every award they win. Thank you.
Reply from Melanie Dawson, Manager at The LawnsMany many thanks for your kind words, I will pass these on to the team. It was a pleasure for us all to be part of your father's care journey. Melanie.

I would like to thank the nurses and carers for their love, care, patience and kindness given to Mum over the last few months. They have given a lift to our lives during this difficult time and I know that Mum had a special relationship with some of them.
I know that nursing care can be challenging
and I greatly appreciate how passionate the team at The Lawns are in their role. Thank you to the carers who have taken time out of their break times to spend time with Mum.
The Lawns felt like my second home during the time Mum was there. I was always made to feel very welcome.
Thank you and very best wishes to the team.

Mum came to The Lawns in December 2017 and was quite poorly but improved thanks to the care provided.
She suffered a stroke in October 2018 and never really recovered from it. She was shown high levels of care and compassion during her final days. She was happy and contented right to the end - testimony
to the staff at The Lawns. She passed away on 12th November 2018.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.927)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.927) out of 10 for The Lawns is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 42 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 42 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.927 for The Lawns is calculated as follows: ( (457 Excellents x 5) + (36 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 493 Ratings = 4.927
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Lawns is based on 42 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 63 registered maximum number of service users is 12.6, which has been reached with 42 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
