My mother was given excellent care in her final three months, none more so than in her final three days, when we were allowed compassionate access, due to a Covid outbreak. The nursing care was exceptional, a peaceful and dignified death. I don't begrudge the money spent as it would have been impossible to keep her at home.

Many thanks for your review we pride ourselves in our skills around End of Life care and it is a testament to our Gold Standards Framework status that you recognise this process of care and compassion at this difficult time for families. It was a pleasure to be part of your mother's care journey. Melanie.

The Lawns Nursing and Residential care home is a very caring place. My mother-in-law was with them for nearly 3 years and she was entertained with many activities encouraged to take part and loved her many conversations with her 'angels' as she called her carers. Right up until she passed away, her care was first class in all aspects. Thank you all so much for the love and attention Mum received from you all.

Thank you so much for all of your kind words - your mum was a much-loved member of our family here and will be very much missed by us all. It was a pleasure being a small part of her life. Melanie.

Since my husband started living at The Lawns, I have always found the management and the staff have shown an amazing commitment to providing an excellent level of care and kindness to him, at times in challenging circumstances. My husband is happy and enjoys the entertainment and life The Lawns gives him, whilst allowing him the dignity he deserves. His room is very pleasant, overlooking the garden and is always kept clean and nice. I’m very grateful my husband lives in such a lovely home with great staff.

Thank you so much for your very kind and comprehensive review - it is great to see that you are so happy with all aspects of the home and I will pass these comments to the team who work hard to drive forward our mission of enabling our residents to live their lives. After viewing the care home prior to my mum's respite there, we were all confident she would be well looked after and my concerns eased. I left my mother for four days of respite for a much-needed break for my husband and I. I was appalled when I came to collect her that she had been in the same clothes for the past four days, stale food was down her clothes and she had remained in bed for most of that time.

My heart sank as being a nurse I know how hard it is to care for the elderly but was angry that basic nursing care had failed. My mother was unkempt and dehydrated and wearing wide pads which she never does at home. After phoning up to complain to the home, I am still awaiting their response.

Reply from Melanie Dawson, Manager at The Lawns

It is extremely disappointing when a review of this nature is posted prior to any attempt to speak with the home and get full clarity of fact on the events. Having reviewed all care notes for the weekend I can see that the resident exercised her right to refuse intervention but made full benefit...

A very caring staff team. Nothing is too much trouble. My 94-year-old mum became a resident in March 2021 after her health deteriorated markedly due to the pandemic lockdown. She was extremely lonely and was isolated from friends and family for many months. The staff at The Lawns treat my mum with respect and thoughtfulness.
Mum now feels safe, happy and cared for. She enjoys the activities provided but also enjoys time on her own.

Thank you to all the staff for making my mum feel so welcome.

The manager and her team at The Lawns Nursing home have transformed my mother’s life, since she moved in August 2020. My mother was in another nursing home where her needs were not being met, which was having a huge impact on her mental health and wellbeing. My mother suffers from a number of medical issues, including stage 4 COPD, Diabetes and Dementia. When she moved in, she wasn't eating proper meals, her blood sugars were out of control, she was suffering from anxiety and generally felt unwell all of the time. They worked hard to find food she liked (including homemade diabetic puddings every day!), they found an insulin regime that worked, worked with the GP to remove unnecessary medicines (including long term steroids), resolved the anxiety issues with a combination of medication and encouraging her to leave her room and get involved in activities. Eight months on, she now eats three meals a day, her appetite has improved, her blood sugars are stable, she feels a lot better and is happy!

Our mum suffered a stroke at home and had a brief stay in hospital. We did not think that she was ready to go home and so The Lawns agreed to take mum at very short notice for what we thought would be a period of recovery. Due to the covid restrictions, we could not visit but the staff kept us updated at least once a day. Mum was very comfortable and was having wonderful care from all the staff. Sadly, mum faded quickly and thankfully we were able to be with her when she passed away. We will always be grateful for the care and kindness shown to our mum in her last days.

My mum became a resident in September 2020. She was an end of life resident. The care, kindness and overall treatment given to mum as well as myself and dad was fantastic. We were able to see mum every day through covid and during lockdown. Those visits meant an awful lot. Management were there at the end also and the support was lovely.

Review from Ann H (Mother of Resident) published on 6 January 2021 Submitted via Website
Overall Experience

Our daughter, aged 43 years, was cared for at The Lawns for a period of 16 months before passing away in December 2020. She suffered from a rare degenerative brain disease. We found the care provided by everyone at The Lawns to be excellent. The staff were all very caring and showed considerable compassion when caring for our daughter. The nursing staff and management kept us fully informed of her condition, at a time when Covid 19 rules restricted visits. The manager liaised regularly with our daughter's consultant in Sheffield, ensuring that he was fully aware of any changes and that her medication could be adjusted accordingly. Her room was excellent and was always kept clean by the housekeeping team. Our daughter loved her food and always enjoyed the meals served.

Reply from Melanie Dawson, Manager at The Lawns

The Lawns is an experience in itself. The manager and her team are amazing, their person-centred care is first class. While our loved one was in their care, we were all coping with Coronavirus. We were not at all worried. The measures that were taken enabled staff, clients and visitors to remain safe as well as giving excellent care. Thank you all - my 8 o'clock clap will be for you.

My mother has been a resident at The Lawns for several weeks and we have no complaints. I would highly recommend The Lawns for anyone needing care. All the staff are helpful and friendly and my mother is well taken care of. She has digestive problems and severe food intolerances and they do their best to accommodate this, a big difference to being in the hospital where she was literally starving to death.

On leaving hospital we were told no more could be done for my husband - wheelchair-bound and needing 2 carers to move him from bed to wheelchair to toilet etc.

The Lawns have now got him walking (with a zimmer frame) moving from bed to wheelchair etc on his own and able to attend to most of his daily needs without help. He has learned to propel his wheelchair himself to move bigger distances. I am now planning for him to come back and live at home.

Following a knee replacement, my mother needed a period of rehabilitation and the consultant, along with several friends recommended The Lawns. The admission process was very easy, so this helped minimise the stress. On the day she was taken to her room and told everything she needed to know. Staff were very caring, only helping when needed to aid recovery. Nursing staff were diligent, food was excellent.

The love, care and compassion shown to our father in his last few weeks was outstanding. This comment applies, without exception, to every member of staff involved in caring for him and making sure he was comfortable at all times. Everyone went out of their way to make sure that we understood what was happening with Dad and the care and support we received on his last day was amazing and made his death so much easier for us to cope with. We would all, without hesitation, recommend The Lawns to anyone looking for end of life care for a family member. Visitors are welcome at all times and are made to feel part of The Lawns family. The Lawns management staff and staff deserve every award they win. Thank you.

I would like to thank the nurses and carers for their love, care, patience and kindness given to Mum over the last few months. They have given a lift to our lives during this difficult time and I know that Mum had a special relationship with some of them.
I know that nursing care can be challenging and I greatly appreciate how passionate the team at The Lawns are in their role. Thank you to the carers who have taken time out of their break times to spend time with Mum.
The Lawns felt like my second home during the time Mum was there. I was always made to feel very welcome.
