  • The Meadows, Alfreton
The Meadows in Alfreton are immensely proud to hold the Quality Premium Award from Derbyshire County Council and to have consistently achieved excellent scores in the annual NHS audit of nursing care (98.46% in the most recent audit).

The Meadows is a purpose-built care home surrounded by landscaped gardens. An inviting patio is much used by residents, particularly on a warm and sunny day.

Home-cooked meals cater for all dietary and cultural needs, and snacks and hot and cold drinks are available 24 hours a day. And of course, family and friends are welcome to join their relative for meals.

On the social front, an activities coordinator organises entertainment and in-house activities to suit all tastes, including baking and crafts, flower arranging and much more.

Above all, highly experienced nurses and carers are devoted to making residents feel both nurtured and at home.

The team are proud to constantly receive positive testimonials for their hard work.

My husband had 2 weeks of respite in The Meadows Care Home and the care he received was great.
My husband was encouraged to join in activities which he had never done. I was asked if they could put photos on the social media page which I said yes and I was happy to see him smiling cutting up carrots
and apples which he has never done. Thank you to all at The Meadows.

My cousin, who is diagnosed with dementia, has been in residence at The Meadows since December 2022 and settled in very quickly after admission. I am my cousin's only relative and I know she is now in an extremely safe, welcoming and friendly environment. All personnel at the home are very caring and
accessible, always available to discuss any issues or medical health concerns that may arise.

Unfortunately, as my mum has quite advanced vascular dementia, she cannot remember even coming into your care, so it is difficult for us to comment. The only thing she keeps mentioning is having her nails painted and my cousin visiting her in his kilt etc, he is a bagpiper and had done a funeral. She
came out with hardly any of her clothes she went in with. I realise it is difficult once they are in the laundry, so next time I will bring her a linen basket to put her dirty washing in and I will wash it when she comes home.
Reply from Lindsay Adlington, Deputy Manager at The MeadowsThank you for your review, I'm sorry to hear about your mum's clothes going missing, we are in the process of having meetings with staff regarding clothing and have issued them with laundry marker pens to hopefully reduce clothing going missing. We look forward to welcoming your mum again on her next planned respite date.

My aunt was only with The Meadows for a short time before she passed away. In that time, she always had nice things to say about the staff, the food and how comfy her bed was. She enjoyed lunch at a pub nearby one day, to my surprise. The Meadows is always decorated at special times of the year and
residents get involved, no matter what their handicap may be. The maintenance man was very helpful when putting up pictures and TV in her room. We were always welcomed when visiting and had tea when we wanted. Care and support were always available and the staff with a sense of humour too.

My mother seemed to settle well and enjoy her stay. It is difficult with her memory issues to find a lot out, but she did mention how much she enjoyed the food. She also said she would be happy to go again. My brother and I were very grateful and appreciated being away without worrying about our mother.

The staff are very helpful and friendly. I was contacted each time my relative had a fall and was consulted about the sides of the bed being put up, which was the best for her safety. The atmosphere in the home was relaxed, yet efficient, I was happy that my relative spent her last few weeks being looked
after and comfortable in the home.

Mum was transferred to The Meadows from the hospital for respite care for four weeks. Mum has mixed dementia and poor mobility due to arthritis. On admission and on quite a few occasions she was very confused and just wanted to go home. The staff were patient with her and made her feel as welcome as
they were able in the circumstances, due to Mum's dementia. Mum settle eventually most of the time and enjoyed the company of the staff. Not always a resident Mum could converse with but that's no one's fault and Mum didn't engage in any activities which did appear to be lacking. My only criticism is the lack of activities whilst Mum was there. We as a family did jigsaws, dominoes etc.
Reply from Lindsay Adlington, Administration Manager at The MeadowsThank you so much for your feedback. We’re sorry that you felt the activities were lacking. We are a little surprised by this as we tailor the activities to each individual and ensure there is something they will enjoy within the calendar. We run weekly book clubs, do seasonal crafts, painting, baking, play games, invite in dancers/singers etc - we aim to always have something going on. That being said, we have reviewed this with the Activities Coordinators and other staff and will add some more activities day to day.

Sadly since my last review, Mum has passed away peacefully. I would like to thank all the staff at Meadows Court for always treating Mum with care and dignity during her stay, you are all incredible at what you do. Mum loved The Meadows and the staff at The Meadows loved Mum and she treated everyone
as her friends. A special thank you to two staff members who were with mum and myself to the end, you were both amazing. Lots of love to you all.

I arranged respite care for Mum whilst I was on holiday. She was a little apprehensive at first but soon settled in and enjoyed the experiences. Everybody was very kind and helpful and she enjoyed the food, which she said was lovely with plenty of choices. Although she would have preferred a room with
full en-suite facilities, the room was warm and the bed comfortable. I could enjoy my holiday knowing she was being looked after. She said the Platinum Jubilee celebrations were very enjoyable too.

I came to the care home with my husband who has advanced Alzheimers and myself who needed respite care. My husband is kept doing things, though his interest soon goes. I keep busy knitting and sewing making things for the residents' fund, for going out on trips etc.

Despite periods of lockdown and closures to visitors due to Covid, the Meadows management has always tried their best to maintain visiting, albeit in the worst-case scenario, window visits during the winter. This is appreciated by the resident’s family.

I cannot recommend the care provided for my late mother enough, over the past eight years. The care was shown with dignity, compassion and respect, with a positive culture and can-do attitude. the care staff were outstanding and it was clear they love their job. More investment is needed to support
staff ie training and a wage increase. I have recommended your home, due to working in the NHS myself.

The staff are always helpful, friendly and welcoming; they treat my mum as one of their own. Nothing is ever too much trouble, and they take time to explain things in a way I can understand, not just in medical jargon. All the staff have been a Godsend during the lockdown periods, and I feel at ease
knowing they are looking after Mum when I can't get in to see her.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.683)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.683) out of 10 for The Meadows is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 16 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.783 for The Meadows is calculated as follows: ( (156 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 189 Ratings = 4.783
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Meadows is based on 16 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 70 registered maximum number of service users is 14, which has been reached with 16 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2023

I began my caring career at 19 years old as a care assistant and worked my way up to being a Home Manager over a decade ago. When I found Milford Care in 2023, it was like coming home.

Our ethos and values are so unique, and our passion for what we do makes Milford Care a very special place to be a part of. I love that every day is different at the Meadows, there is a diverse and unique community of people here, and I love to celebrate that.

I thrive in a busy environment with lots to do, and the Meadows is just that! I love to bring positivity and laughter to our home.

Outside of work, I love to keep busy, spending time with my family and singing in a choir based in Belper.
