The home is the best I have ever been in! It has such a homely, welcoming atmosphere and is always spotlessly clean.
A hot dinner is served every day, which is freshly made by the in-house chef, and my mother-in-law says the meals are always very tasty. The staff are brilliant, so kind and caring and always take such good care of Mum.
Mum is as happy as she can be in this home, and that says it all!

Thank you, Shelton Lock.

My Mum was with the Shelton Lock Care Home for just over four months for end of life care. We were told she may only last two weeks by the hospital team but she proved them wrong! In those four months. I visited regularly and watched as she received loving care, excellent food, was treated with respect and dignity, enjoyed activities, sat in the wonderful garden, and above all - she was happy (which gave me comfort). I had viewed other nursing homes before choosing Shelton Lock and I am so pleased that we asked them to look after Mum. She thrived for a short while, she was pain free, she was safe, and I knew she was always well cared for by an attentive team. From our family's experience, the facilities, the building, the garden and the services are all equally of a high standard but the one thing that excelled is the people. The management, the nursing team, the carers, the kitchen staff and any other support members were excellent.

Thank you Shelton Lock for looking after my Mum!

My mum went into Shelton Lock for what was meant to be two weeks of respite care due to a terminal illness. She was treated terribly the entire time she was there as if she didn't deserve a bed.
She lasted 5 days before leaving, due to the poor care she was receiving. During that time she wasn't offered a shower. When she asked when she could get one, or to be shown where it was, it was never the right time. Too early, or too late in the day. The first day there she wasn't given any food. Another day no water. The "meals" were half a sandwich and 4 cheese puffs. Sometimes cold soup if she was lucky.
The Sister told her she was lucky, she could talk and walk unlike most people that were in, said in an aggressive tone. I'm sure she feels really lucky with the terminal lung disease that her palliative team says she could pass away from at any moment.

This was overhead by a carer who thought it would be a wonderful idea on her next visit to sing "you can talk, you can walk"

I am more than satisfied by the way my aunt has been looked after at Shelton Lock over the last five and a half years. I am particularly happy with the "end-of-life" care provided for her. The staff have been caring and thoughtful and very supportive to me too.

My dad originally went into Shelton Lock for respite care, but unfortunately, he deteriorated and sadly passed away. Whilst in the care home, he was treated very well, and all his needs were attended to. He was treated with dignity throughout and was treated with the utmost respect when he passed. I cannot thank the staff enough.

We were given a short list of homes to look at for Dad. Shelton Lock was the first we looked at. We were greeted politely and friendly. We were shown around and all the facilities were explained to us. The rooms looked really nice. We went on to visit five more homes, but we'd already took a shine to Shelton lock and went back for a second visit. Dad's been there five weeks now and he's told us he feels happy and content. He's eating better and looking brighter. He's even managed to go into the garden in a special chair that the staff were only too glad to organise. It was a lovely afternoon, Dad enjoyed it so much and remembers it fondly. It was a big ask because Dad has been house and bed bound for nearly two years, but with the staff's help, he felt the fresh air.

The staff are very kind and caring towards my brother. They treat him with dignity and respect.
They have arranged for medical and medication reviews in a timely manner.
They don’t only look after my brother, but they also look after me, providing all information about my brother's care and discussing changes to his care plan.

Always on hand to provide a much-needed coffee!

My Mother could not fault the care she received. She also said the food was amazing. The staff are extremely caring both with the residents and their families, especially through difficult times and with the extra problem of Covid. The staff were excellent at keeping us updated with Mum's condition and were very helpful at keeping us in touch with Mum charging her phone for her or letting us talk to her on the home's phone.

Mum was end of life, the care she received was excellent, the staff were brilliant with mum, myself and my sister, helped us understand mums care and nursing needs and were very sympathetic and caring when mum passed away. The home was also spot on with Covid regulations and cleanliness. Would thoroughly recommend the home to anyone seeking one for a member of their family or friend.

Some of the staff here are excellent, very caring and we know that they had my grandma's best interests at heart.
However, the lack of communication from the home regarding visits and facilitating her to communicate with family was distressing for all of us. On one particular occasion, no one had mentioned there was only one person allowed to visit which caused my brother and I to be turned away and told we were not even allowed to wave at her from a safe distance. This broke us all emotionally.

I understand that it is difficult in these circumstances and government guidelines haven't been very clear.

Kind, caring management and staff who lovingly looked after our terminally ill daughter. Nothing was too much trouble. The pandemic made things difficult for visiting and access, but every effort was made to ensure that our daughter had as many visits as possible including overnight stays. We appreciated that everything possible was done to make our daughter's last days as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

Introducing Nicola Millar

Home Manager at Shelton Lock

What does ‘kindness’ mean to you?

“Kindness to me is treating everyone you meet with respect and dignity, in a way in which you would expect to be treated yourself.”

After beginning her career in the care industry more than 15 years ago, Nicola has gained great knowledge of general nursing, with a specific interest in palliative care.

As a qualified nurse and dedicated healthcare professional, Nicola has gained a wealth of experience in providing care to elderly people to help enrich their lives, leading to her progression as Home Manager.

When asked what she enjoyed most about her role, Nicola remarked: “I love being able to make a difference to Residents’ and Relatives’ lives through providing compassionate, kind and high-quality care.”

Nicola credits her greatest achievement to diving the Great Barrier Reef, where she got to experience swimming with sharks.
