Belong Wigan, the town’s hugely popular village in Millers Lane, offers outstanding facilities and support and a vibrant programme of community events.

Belong households represent a radically different alternative to conventional care homes. They operate with a higher-than-average staffing ratio and a maximum of 11 residents per household, offering a family atmosphere where customers can build lasting relationships with staff and other residents. Their specially trained support and nursing staff are available around the clock to support individuals with dementia and those residents who require clinical care.

Belong Wigan offers 54 self-contained apartments for independent living in Jasmine and Honeysuckle Court and six supported ‘households’ with modern en-suite bedrooms and open plan lounge and kitchen areas. Its village centre facilities include a licensed bistro, hair salon, library and exercise studio. Their village is a stunning example of how advanced design and very high standards of care can provide a new quality of life for older people.

Their modern, self-contained one and two bedroom apartments are available to either purchase or rent. The Belong ‘Buy Back’ scheme also guarantees that they’ll repurchase your apartment for the same price that you originally paid, providing total peace of mind for apartment owners.

My father was a resident since December 2020 at Belong in Wigan. He passed away on Friday 13th August 2021. Dad used to live in London but became terminally ill. I didn’t want him to be alone so, I took time off work and moved him in with me at home in Wigan. However his health deteriorated within 7
months and after speaking to the manager and her team at Belong in Wigan, I knew dad would be well cared for and his need met. They made him feel welcome, loved and like a member of their own family. This has been a great comfort to me and my sister. I can’t thank them all enough. Everyone at Belong I have had the pleasure to meet and know are truly wonderful and caring people. Thank you all. I know he wants the easiest of residents, but he was my dad and I loved him. I thank you all for your kindness, compassion, patients and care. God bless you.
Reply from Gill Menguy, General Manager at Belong WiganThank you so much for taking the time to post this incredibly moving feedback. It was a privilege to support your dad and it is crucial to us that we make people’s time with us as special and positive as possible. It will mean a great deal to our village teams to read your comments and I will ensure they are shared with everyone. Thanks again.

My elderly father has been a resident at Belong Wigan for the last 12 months. From my first inquiry phone call to Belong (at the height of Covid lockdown) to the ongoing daily care, he has received subsequently, the management and care staff have been kind, helpful and professional. Over those 12 months,
dad has needed more and more nursing care: it is obvious from his care notes (which we can view daily online via the Gateway service) and most obviously when I and family members visit, that he is being well looked after and all his needs met. He recently celebrated his 90th birthday and staff did everything to make this a special day for him. From the standard of food, cleanliness, to the professionalism and kindness of staff, we cannot praise Belong Wigan enough.

The care my dad receives in Belong Wigan is second to none. He came in on end of life care and has since gone from strength to strength. This would not be possible without the outstanding care and encouragement from the staff.
Thank you.

A beautiful calm place to be. All the staff are welcoming and professional. My dad is a resident of Accasia House and the staff are outstanding. They have a great leader and extremely inspirational to the team. Each team member treats my dad and our family like we are one big family, this is very comforting
to us. Dad is loved, clean and cared for with exceptional standards.

Belong Wigan is a lovely caring home from home for our mum, she is cared for so well by the most wonderful staff, mum is happy and content. We feel fortunate knowing how well she is looked after. The staff deserve special praise for the way they have dealt with the Covid crisis. My visits to mum are
so organised, feel very safe and all done with the usual happy welcome. I would highly recommend Belong to anyone.

Cannot rate highly enough all the staff and facilities at Belong Wigan. Knowing that mum cares for happy and settled eases the guilt of not being able to provide the best care at home. Throughout the pandemic, mum has been kept safe and it is a testament to the standards set how the team at Belong have
managed the difficult circumstances and increased pressures on their already busy roles. Thank you.

My mum is a resident at Belong and has been for 2 years in January 2021. She was admitted to hospital in December 2019 and came to belong on the 4th of January. Having viewed a few care/ nursing homes before her discharge I am of the opinion that mum could not have gone into any other facility, None
matched up to Belong, facilities and staff, ethos etc. I don't think she would have survived had she been elsewhere as she wouldn't have got the one to one staff. Excellent!

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.971)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.971) out of 10 for Belong Wigan is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.971 for Belong Wigan is calculated as follows: ( (264 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 272 Ratings = 4.971
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Belong Wigan is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 67 registered maximum number of service users is 13.4, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Lana Welsh

Job Title: Support Manager

Qualifications: Registered Nurse, Level 5 in Leadership and Management

Experience: Lana moved from Edinburgh in 2002 to complete a nursing degree at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston and qualified in 2005. She worked as a Registered Nurse for eleven years, as a Specialist Nurse in women’s health and oncology.

Lana's goal was to move away from acute care into a social care setting and in 2016 she began her career at Belong Wigan, as a Registered Nurse. She went on to be nominated for the Good Nurse Award at the 2017 Great British Care Awards, before progressing to the role of Lead Nurse in 2018 and in April 2019 she was appointed to the role of Support Manager. Tanya

Tanya Highton

Job Title: Front of House Manager Joined: 2012

Tanya joined Belong in 2012 as a temporary receptionist and developed her role whilst working toward Health and Social Care qualifications 2 and 3, progressing to the role of Senior Support Worker and later to the role of Experience Coordinator, with responsibility for the development and implementation of a programme of activities for customers living in the village and the wider local community. In 2021, due to the retirement of the village’s long-serving front-of-house manager, Tanya made the decision to move back to the front-of-house team to lead the front-of-house, administration and caretaking teams.

Charlene

Charlene Frodsham

Job Title: Experience Coordinator

Local community champion, Charlene Frodsham, from Wigan, joined the team at Belong Wigan in early 2021, taking up the post of experience coordinator and working alongside residents and colleagues to provide a creative programme of meaningful occupation via events, one-to-one and group activities.

Initially from a customer service background, Charlene's enthusiasm and cheerful nature prompted her to take on the role of community champion for the supermarket brand Asda. It was here that her talent shone as she organised community challenges and fundraising activities for local groups and charities, including those that provide dementia care and support for adults with learning disabilities. When donating board games to Belong, she was 'blown away' by their set-up, which far exceeded her expectations of a typical care provider. Upon learning about the vacancy of experience coordinator, Charlene was excited to apply, feeling this was an opportunity that she couldn't let pass by.

Taking a leading role in both these programmes, Charlene will be working closely with the residents and providing activities to inspire and delight them.

Sophie

Sophie Walls

Job Title: Belong at Home Area Manager
