Belong Wigan is an amazing place to live. Mum moved into her apartment just as Covid hit. The Belong team cared for Mum in her darkest hours when she couldn't see her family and had left the place she had lived all her adult life. The staff are amazing. We have never met more helpful, caring and committed people anywhere. We would recommend Belong Wigan to anyone who asked. We have never seen mum as happy. The staff go above and beyond.

A huge thank you to all the staff.

Nan moved in during Covid May 2020 and has never been as happy as she is now. She has made new friends and has got her independence back. Thanks to the activities ladies, she now has fulfilled days, full of amazing activities to keep nan busy. Her mobility has improved loads thanks to the ladies. Nan doesn't feel like a customer; she feels like a family member within the Belong family. As a family, we can't thank Belong enough for all they do.

Since moving into the village I haven't been happier. I feel part of the Belong Family and not just a customer. The activities keep me active and the front of house team keep me informed of any changes and always welcome me always with a smile. I cannot fault the food or the atmosphere. I love it here.

We love that we have found this care home for my dad. It is everything we could ask for in the care we need for him as we live distances away. All the staff are so friendly and helpful when we visit. I will be glad when Covid-19 is over and we can visit him in his house. Thanks to all the staff

The staff at Belong are extraordinary from the carers, through to the front of house staff, managers and catering staff. They are courteous, helpful and speak in a friendly and caring manner to residents. The Belong reception area where we visit residents during the pandemic is bright, warm and welcoming. You are always offered a drink when visiting relatives!
My dad is in Elm House. The staff are so helpful and make my dad very comfortable giving him the care he needs whilst giving him some feeling of independence too, which is a fine balance. The food is of good standard and the staff go the extra mile to offer alternatives if he doesn’t want what’s on the menu that day.

Belong is not like any other care home. It is a home from home. Thank you, everyone.

Overall Experience

My father was a resident since December 2020 at Belong in Wigan. He passed away on Friday 13th August 2021. Dad used to live in London but became terminally ill. I didn’t want him to be alone so, I took time off work and moved him in with me at home in Wigan. However his health deteriorated within 7 months and after speaking to the manager and her team at Belong in Wigan, I knew dad would be well cared for and his need met. They made him feel welcome, loved and like a member of their own family. This has been a great comfort to me and my sister. I can’t thank them all enough. Everyone at Belong I have had the pleasure to meet and know are truly wonderful and caring people. Thank you all. I know he wants the easiest of residents, but he was my dad and I loved him. I thank you all for your kindness, compassion, patients and care. God bless you.

Overall Experience

My elderly father has been a resident at Belong Wigan for the last 12 months. From my first inquiry phone call to Belong (at the height of Covid lockdown) to the ongoing daily care, he has received subsequently, the management and care staff have been kind, helpful and professional. Over those 12 months, dad has needed more and more nursing care: it is obvious from his care notes (which we can view daily online via the Gateway service) and most obviously when I and family members visit, that he is being well looked after and all his needs met. He recently celebrated his 90th birthday and staff did everything to make this a special day for him. From the standard of food, cleanliness, to the professionalism and kindness of staff, we cannot praise Belong Wigan enough.

A beautiful calm place to be. All the staff are welcoming and professional. My dad is a resident of Accasia House and the staff are outstanding. They have a great leader and extremely inspirational to the team. Each team member treats my dad and our family like we are one big family, this is very comforting to us. Dad is loved, clean and cared for with exceptional standards.

Cannot rate highly enough all the staff and facilities at Belong Wigan. Knowing that mum cares for happy and settled eases the guilt of not being able to provide the best care at home. Throughout the pandemic, mum has been kept safe and it is a testament to the standards set how the team at Belong have managed the difficult circumstances and increased pressures on their already busy roles. Thank you.

My mum is a resident at Belong and has been for 2 years in January 2021. She was admitted to hospital in December 2019 and came to belong on the 4th of January. Having viewed a few care/ nursing homes before her discharge I am of the opinion that mum could not have gone into any other facility, None matched up to Belong, facilities and staff, ethos etc. I don't think she would have survived had she been elsewhere as she wouldn't have got the one to one staff. Excellent!

Gill has led the team at Belong Wigan as General Manager since the village opened in 2009. She is highly experienced and has worked in the care profession for over 25 years, starting her career as a care assistant in a dementia unit. She progressed to the role of Care Supervisor and then to Care Manager in 2000, working at several homes within the organisation. Gill was promoted to the post of Home Manager in 2003 and moved to Sherwood House in 2006, where she moved the learning and development strategy forward to prepare the team of staff for the move to the Belong setting and working culture. She holds the Registered Managers Award, along with a number of other management and training qualifications.

Lana Welsh
Lana WelshJob Title:Support Manager

Qualifications: Registered Nurse, Level 5 in Leadership and Management

Experience: Lana moved from Edinburgh in 2002 to complete a nursing degree at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston and qualified in 2005. She worked as a Registered Nurse for eleven years, as a Specialist Nurse in women’s health and oncology.

Lana's goal was to move away from acute care into a social care setting and in 2016 she began her career at Belong Wigan, as a Registered Nurse. She went on to be nominated for the Good Nurse Award at the 2017 Great British Care Awards, before progressing to the role of Lead Nurse in 2018 and in April 2019 she was appointed to the role of Support Manager. Lana has since completed a Level 5 in Leadership and Management and remains a Registered Nurse.

Tanya Highton
Tanya HightonJob Title:Front of House ManagerJoined: 2012

Tanya joined Belong in 2012 as a temporary receptionist and developed her role whilst working toward Health and Social Care qualifications 2 and 3, progressing to the role of Senior Support Worker and later to the role of Experience Coordinator, with responsibility for the development and implementation of a programme of activities for customers living in the village and the wider local community. In 2021, due to the retirement of the village’s long-serving front-of-house manager, Tanya made the decision to move back to the front-of-house team to lead the front-of-house, administration and caretaking teams.

Charlene Frodsham
Charlene FrodshamJob Title:Experience Coordinator

Local community champion, Charlene Frodsham, from Wigan, joined the team at Belong Wigan in early 2021, taking up the post of experience coordinator and working alongside residents and colleagues to provide a creative programme of meaningful occupation via events, one-to-one and group activities.

Initially from a customer service background, Charlene's enthusiasm and cheerful nature prompted her to take on the role of community champion for the supermarket brand Asda. It was here that her talent shone as she organised community challenges and fundraising activities for local groups and charities, including those that provide dementia care and support for adults with learning disabilities. When donating board games to Belong, she was 'blown away' by their set-up, which far exceeded her expectations of a typical care provider. Upon learning about the vacancy of experience coordinator, Charlene was excited to apply, feeling this was an opportunity that she couldn't let pass by.

Taking a leading role in both these programmes, Charlene will be working closely with the residents and providing activities to inspire and delight them.

Sophie Walls
Sophie WallsJob Title:Belong at Home Area Manager

Qualifications: Level 5 in Leadership Management.

Sophie has worked for the organisation for over 11 years, starting her career as a support worker in the village households. Two years later, Sophie was appointed to the role of senior support worker and quickly progressed to the role of lead senior support worker, before joining Belong's home care team.

Sophie has completed a level 5 in leadership Management and in 2013 Sophie won the Excellence in Resident Handling Award at the Regional Care Awards and went on to the National Care Awards and won the National award. Particular outstanding features included her ability to empathise with residents in their own care planning for moving.
