Belong Wigan, the town’s hugely popular village in Millers Lane, offers outstanding facilities and support and a vibrant programme of community events.

Belong households represent a radically different alternative to conventional care homes. They operate with a higher-than-average staffing ratio and a maximum of 11 residents per household, offering a family atmosphere where customers can build lasting relationships with staff and other residents. Their specially trained support and nursing staff are available around the clock to support individuals with dementia and those residents who require clinical care.

Belong Wigan offers 54 self-contained apartments for independent living in Jasmine and Honeysuckle Court and six supported ‘households’ with modern en-suite bedrooms and open plan lounge and kitchen areas. Its village centre facilities include a licensed bistro, hair salon, library and exercise studio. Their village is a stunning example of how advanced design and very high standards of care can provide a new quality of life for older people.

Their modern, self-contained one and two bedroom apartments are available to either purchase or rent. The Belong ‘Buy Back’ scheme also guarantees that they’ll repurchase your apartment for the same price that you originally paid, providing total peace of mind for apartment owners.

Belong is a high-quality care home, it is not cheap but you get what you pay for, other care homes we visited seemed lacking compared to Belong there really was no other choice. In particular, we loved the idea of father being in an apartment and mother in a cared for facility and they could still be
close. The family love the Bistro where we could all get together and share a meal.

I would like to thank all of the staff at Belong Wigan who are involved in the care of my mum. They do an exceptional job. I would especially like to mention Mum's named companion for going above and beyond with Mum with the pamper sessions and being a friend to her whilst I am unable to visit during
this unprecedented time. Thank you for being amazing and for all that you do.
Reply from Gill Menguy, General Manager at Belong WiganThank you for your positive feedback on the support provided at Belong Wigan. We do our best to understand every customer and it is a pleasure to have your mum living with us. Thank you for choosing Belong Wigan.

My mum lived in the village for 5 years. At the beginning, in Honeysuckle Apartment and later Willow Household. The care mum received was first class. Mum was loved by all the fabulous carers and staff and always felt happy. We cannot thank you all enough for everything you did as she sadly slipped
away. You are true champions and if mum was here she would hug you all. I highly recommend Belong Wigan.
Reply from Gill Menguy, General Manager at Belong WiganThank you so much for taking the time to post this incredibly moving feedback. Our mother sadly passed away at the beginning of August and had been a resident on the Willow household since June 2017. The staff treated Mother with great care and dignity at all times and for that we are very grateful. The care home manager and all her staff do a great job in what, at times, must
be difficult circumstances and are always willing to listen to any concerns relatives may have. The nursing staff are also very caring as are the ladies in the Bistro. Nothing is 100% perfect in this world but the positives far outweigh any negatives.

Have dealt with the lockdown with compassion and profession, the residents have been protected and the relatives informed at all times. Coudn't have asked for a better place for my brothers care, he is difficult to deal with but they accept him for what he is.

I am not a relative who is easily pleased as those who know me will attest. However, I cannot be more grateful to everyone on Cedar who care for our mum. With the COVID lockdown and all the difficulties that brings I have been really impressed with how Belong have handled things. Emotions have run high
especially with myself, all carers and staff have been sensitive and understanding. I can only thank everyone again and assure you we do understand how very difficult the work you do is. We appreciate and value everything you all do.

My mum was very happy at Belong. She enjoyed her meals in the bistro with family and friends, her day trips out and the different activities she got involved in with the wider community. The staff are extremely caring and know all residents by their first names. They have a super activities team to
keep residents busy at all times of the day. We enjoyed all the family days and always felt very welcome when we visited.

I would like to thank Belong Wigan for caring so well for my dad who had gone into them paraplegic due to a spinal abscess.
The journey from start to finish was fantastic, extremely good communication with my dad and his family. All the staff on Willow House are to be commended for the care, patience
and kindness. My dad only being 61-years-old and the loss of his ability to walk only happening over a year he was frustrated sometimes had low moods but Willow House kept his spirits high.
He has now returned home yesterday to his wife and I can not thank you enough for helping this happen especially through this pandemic. I know it's been difficult to sort but you did it, you know who you are. Thank you for not just being carers but also good friends to my dad.

Belong Wigan and particularly Beech House, where my mum lived and now cared for over the last few years is an amazing place. I felt that she was part of a family who encouraged her to do things and live life to the full. Mum was well fed with home-cooked meals, clean and well cared for. The staff were
always there for her and also for relatives like me, keeping us updated and informed, also making us welcome. I would recommend this wonderful home with its fantastic staff to anyone. It really is a home from home.

High quality of facilities supported by caring staff.
Having easily accessed good NHS resources makes it easier for the family to support.

Myself and my wife moved into Belong Wigan in August, before we moved there I was in hospital and needed full-time care. I tried a care home in the area but it wasn't for me. My wife is registered blind and deaf, having been married for 40 years and wanted to remain together. Belong Wigan offered us
a bedroom together and made the extra bedroom a lounge so we could have alone time. When we moved here I couldn't walk and was really down about it. Belong offered me the opportunity to go to the gym supported by the gym instructor, and what a difference it has made. I can now walk independently without a Zimmer. I am currently taking part in a Road Worlds competition whereby we ride miles on a bike in competition with other care homes. I want to say, for the first time in 12 months, I feel myself and my wife are having quality time together, we never thought living in a care home would have so many benefits. Well done team Wigan, everything you do and provide is excellent.

An excellent home, providing the highest possible level of care. My mum spent two weeks here for a period of respite. She has mobility issues due to suffering from Parkinson’s disease and also, has Dementia. The lovely ladies at Laurel House couldn’t have treated her any better. Nothing was too much
trouble and her medication was given on time without any prompting. Watching how the staff interact with residents demonstrates it is a vocation for them, not a job. Well done ladies we look forward to seeing you again soon.

I cannot speak highly enough of one of the carers in Cedar House Wigan. My father has been a resident for 3 years and had to be admitted to A&E late one evening. I live 250 miles away and made my way there as quickly as I could. The carer insisted on accompanying him even though it was late and her
shift had finished. She remained with him throughout the next 5 hours refusing to leave his side I was told by the A&E staff and was with him when he passed away. All the time talking to him and letting him know I was on my way. I missed him by 30 minutes but I am comforted to know that he had someone he knew and cared about him so much by his side. The A&E staff said she had gone above and beyond her duties. She then went home to attend to her own young family and then straight to a course she was scheduled to attend. If this is not exceptional I don’t know what is. Thank you once again for all you did for Dad.

The care is exceptional, facilities second to none. All of the team provided outstanding support to both my father-in-law and family.
The relatives' gateway site allowed us to have access to his records and enabled us to communicate with the team easily. All of the staff treated my father-in-law with
dignity and respect and the management team kept us fully informed.
I cannot recommend this care home enough.

I am really happy with the care and affection mum is shown on Cedar House. Despite her challenging condition, they seem to have won her around, which is a huge step forward for us as a family.
The set up here at Belong Wigan is ideal for our circumstances as dad is fit and well and wants to spend
as much time as possible with mum, who has advanced vascular dementia. Dad lives in one of Belong’s apartments and is really settled there.

My mum has been a resident at Belong for 8 years. The care she receives is excellent. The staff are lovely and are very caring to Mum's variable moods - she can be difficult at times, but they know how to respond/always loving! The only negative response/feedback is there are not enough activities within
the household i.e., singers in house on a regular basis (not always in the venue) as Mum often does not want to leave her team/lounge. (Needs decorating. Needs 'old fashioned memories' in the lounge areas. Meals/diet needs reviewing also - more appropriate meals.)

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.971)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.971) out of 10 for Belong Wigan is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.971 for Belong Wigan is calculated as follows: ( (264 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 272 Ratings = 4.971
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Belong Wigan is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 67 registered maximum number of service users is 13.4, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Tanya

Tanya Highton

Job Title: Front of House Manager Joined: 2012

Tanya joined Belong in 2012 as a temporary receptionist and developed her role whilst working toward Health and Social Care qualifications 2 and 3, progressing to the role of Senior Support Worker and later to the role of Experience Coordinator, with responsibility for the development and implementation of a programme of activities for customers living in the village and the wider local community. In 2021, due to the retirement of the village’s long-serving front-of-house manager, Tanya made the decision to move back to the front-of-house team to lead the front-of-house, administration and caretaking teams.

Charlene

Charlene Frodsham

Job Title: Experience Coordinator

Local community champion, Charlene Frodsham, from Wigan, joined the team at Belong Wigan in early 2021, taking up the post of experience coordinator and working alongside residents and colleagues to provide a creative programme of meaningful occupation via events, one-to-one and group activities.

Initially from a customer service background, Charlene's enthusiasm and cheerful nature prompted her to take on the role of community champion for the supermarket brand Asda. It was here that her talent shone as she organised community challenges and fundraising activities for local groups and charities, including those that provide dementia care and support for adults with learning disabilities. When donating board games to Belong, she was 'blown away' by their set-up, which far exceeded her expectations of a typical care provider. Upon learning about the vacancy of experience coordinator, Charlene was excited to apply, feeling this was an opportunity that she couldn't let pass by.

Taking a leading role in both these programmes, Charlene will be working closely with the residents and providing activities to inspire and delight them.
