Myself and my wife moved into Belong Wigan in August, before we moved there I was in hospital and needed full-time care. I tried a care home in the area but it wasn't for me. My wife is registered blind and deaf, having been married for 40 years and wanted to remain together. Belong Wigan offered us a bedroom together and made the extra bedroom a lounge so we could have alone time. When we moved here I couldn't walk and was really down about it. Belong offered me the opportunity to go to the gym supported by the gym instructor, and what a difference it has made. I can now walk independently without a Zimmer. I am currently taking part in a Road Worlds competition whereby we ride miles on a bike in competition with other care homes. I want to say, for the first time in 12 months, I feel myself and my wife are having quality time together, we never thought living in a care home would have so many benefits. Well done team Wigan, everything you do and provide is excellent.

An excellent home, providing the highest possible level of care. My mum spent two weeks here for a period of respite. She has mobility issues due to suffering from Parkinson’s disease and also, has Dementia. The lovely ladies at Laurel House couldn’t have treated her any better. Nothing was too much trouble and her medication was given on time without any prompting. Watching how the staff interact with residents demonstrates it is a vocation for them, not a job. Well done ladies we look forward to seeing you again soon.

I cannot speak highly enough of one of the carers in Cedar House Wigan. My father has been a resident for 3 years and had to be admitted to A&E late one evening. I live 250 miles away and made my way there as quickly as I could. The carer insisted on accompanying him even though it was late and her shift had finished. She remained with him throughout the next 5 hours refusing to leave his side I was told by the A&E staff and was with him when he passed away. All the time talking to him and letting him know I was on my way. I missed him by 30 minutes but I am comforted to know that he had someone he knew and cared about him so much by his side. The A&E staff said she had gone above and beyond her duties. She then went home to attend to her own young family and then straight to a course she was scheduled to attend. If this is not exceptional I don’t know what is. Thank you once again for all you did for Dad.

The care is exceptional, facilities second to none. All of the team provided outstanding support to both my father-in-law and family.
The relatives' gateway site allowed us to have access to his records and enabled us to communicate with the team easily. All of the staff treated my father-in-law with dignity and respect and the management team kept us fully informed.

I cannot recommend this care home enough.

I am really happy with the care and affection mum is shown on Cedar House. Despite her challenging condition, they seem to have won her around, which is a huge step forward for us as a family.

The set up here at Belong Wigan is ideal for our circumstances as dad is fit and well and wants to spend as much time as possible with mum, who has advanced vascular dementia. Dad lives in one of Belong’s apartments and is really settled there.

My mum has been a resident at Belong for 8 years. The care she receives is excellent. The staff are lovely and are very caring to Mum's variable moods - she can be difficult at times, but they know how to respond/always loving! The only negative response/feedback is there are not enough activities within the household i.e., singers in house on a regular basis (not always in the venue) as Mum often does not want to leave her team/lounge. (Needs decorating. Needs 'old fashioned memories' in the lounge areas. Meals/diet needs reviewing also - more appropriate meals.)

My mother was a resident at Belong in Platt Bridge for 18 months or so, until her recent death.

During her time at Belong, she was well looked after. But more than that, the care staff on Willow household demonstrated genuine care and affection for her. A care home needs to have a high standard of facilities and activities, and Belong Wigan does have those; but it lives or dies on the quality and capability of its care team. The team on Willow Household, who cared for Mum, were first class in my opinion. They are a bunch of dedicated people, who have a good sense of fun and empathy. As a relative, I always felt welcome and I will actually miss seeing them every week. In many ways, it felt like being part of an extended family which included the other household residents as well.

We looked at a number of other care homes before choosing Belong - and it was very much the best we saw. Looking back on Mum's time there, Willow Household fully delivered on that promise.

My Mum was cared for in Willow House in Belong Wigan for 4 years during which time the level of care was excellent, the senior management were responsive and supportive of family requests and the standard of accommodation was superb. Daytime and night staff formed a great bond with Mum and they were genuinely upset at her passing which I thought spoke volumes for the culture in the home. Thanks.

Choosing a care home for my grandma was an extremely difficult task. Belong Wigan were so accommodating to allow us to visit and look around their care home any time of the day. We immediately felt this was the right place. Everywhere was spotless and smelt fresh and clean, the staff were always maintaining all areas of Belong. All the staff were friendly, welcoming and very approachable.

My grandma felt settled immediately and adapted to this life easily as the staff made her feel like they were a family. There was continuity for the residence with the staff so individual needs, help and comforts could all be met to the highest standards. Friends and relatives are welcome anytime to continue that welcoming feeling. The care received was outstanding, the staff always on hand be it medical needs or just some company. At all times staff were professional and safety and security was outstanding. They went far beyond our expectations and for that, we can’t thank Belong enough.

From January 2018 to the end of October 2018, Mum has lived in five care homes, three of which are part of the Belong group. Mum has suffered a broken hip, pneumonia, had nine weeks in hospital and lost seven kilos. Mum has mixed dementia, challenging behaviour and is very confused especially with all the moves. I have been really worried and have desperately tried to find the right care home where Mums needs could be met. Finally, I have found the perfect place, Belong Wigan.
The staff are a cohesive, extremely well trained, well led, enthusiastic, happy and caring team. They are simply amazing. It's a pleasure to visit Mum and see her living with purpose, helping in the kitchen, gardening, dancing, singing and happy. Since Mum's move to Belong Wigan six weeks ago. she has gained all the lost weight. She is genuinely cared for, treated with respect and dignity.

A huge thank you to the outstanding home manager, admiral nurses and all the staff you are a real credit to the Belong organisation.

Despite Dad only being in Belong and the Cedar household for a couple of months, we were overwhelmed by the care, support and attentiveness provided by the staff in these fantastic facilities. Dad had Alzheimer's disease and dementia but from the first day after his transfer from hospital, the staff made a positive impact on his life (and ours). We easily personalised his room to maintain an element of familiarity for him. He was so well looked after and we were made extremely welcome with many cups of tea and coffee. As Dad's time drew to a close, we were supported superbly well and were able to stay by his side, holding his hand.

The manager has every reason to be proud of her team of carers in Cedar house. It’s very apparent that they clearly love what they do; their commitment to providing the residents with the very best care and a loving, family-style environment played a large part in our decision as a family to place Dad in their care.

I would like to thank you and your staff for all the consideration and duty of care that everyone has shown to Mum during her two and half years that she spent on Acacia.
I would like to commend the professionalism that your staff have shown to us all as a family as well as Mum. It’s obvious that the staff are trained to a very high standard, but most of all your selection process is excellent because each member of staff is compassionate, caring and not there to just do a job, the warmth of the households is just like a true family.
It was touching that everyone came to visit her during her final days including those on reception. Thank you especially for making Mum's last few days so much easier for us as a family - the endless cups of tea, coffee and meals were amazing - and the support afforded to us all was much appreciated.

I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that was involved in mother's care. It was all the little extra touches that meant so much.

My husband has been here for nearly five years. In that time, we have both got to know the staff well and regard them all as our friends.

Occasionally, as I have a sharp eye, and want only the best for my husband, I note small slip-ups in care - awkward position in bed, some aspects of grooming. BUT nothing dramatic and all usually remedied when asked for.

My father was resident at Belong Wigan for three months until his passing. The love, care and kindness shown to my father, and the family as a whole, far exceeded our expectations. Gill has led the team at Belong Wigan as General Manager since the village opened in 2009. She progressed to the role of Care Supervisor and then to Care Manager in 2000, working at several homes within the organisation. Gill was promoted to the post of Home Manager in 2003 and moved to Sherwood House in 2006, where she moved the learning and development strategy forward to prepare the team of staff for the move to the Belong setting and working culture. She holds the Registered Managers Award, along with a number of other management and training qualifications.

Lana Welsh
Lana WelshJob Title:Support Manager

Qualifications: Registered Nurse, Level 5 in Leadership and Management

Experience: Lana moved from Edinburgh in 2002 to complete a nursing degree at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston and qualified in 2005. She worked as a Registered Nurse for eleven years, as a Specialist Nurse in women’s health and oncology.

Lana's goal was to move away from acute care into a social care setting and in 2016 she began her career at Belong Wigan, as a Registered Nurse. She went on to be nominated for the Good Nurse Award at the 2017 Great British Care Awards, before progressing to the role of Lead Nurse in 2018 and in April 2019 she was appointed to the role of Support Manager. Lana has since completed a Level 5 in Leadership and Management and remains a Registered Nurse.

Tanya joined Belong in 2012 as a temporary receptionist and developed her role whilst working toward Health and Social Care qualifications 2 and 3, progressing to the role of Senior Support Worker and later to the role of Experience Coordinator, with responsibility for the development and implementation of a programme of activities for customers living in the village and the wider local community. In 2021, due to the retirement of the village’s long-serving front-of-house manager, Tanya made the decision to move back to the front-of-house team to lead the front-of-house, administration and caretaking teams.

Charlene Frodsham
Charlene FrodshamJob Title:Experience Coordinator

Local community champion, Charlene Frodsham, from Wigan, joined the team at Belong Wigan in early 2021, taking up the post of experience coordinator and working alongside residents and colleagues to provide a creative programme of meaningful occupation via events, one-to-one and group activities.

Initially from a customer service background, Charlene's enthusiasm and cheerful nature prompted her to take on the role of community champion for the supermarket brand Asda. It was here that her talent shone as she organised community challenges and fundraising activities for local groups and charities, including those that provide dementia care and support for adults with learning disabilities. When donating board games to Belong, she was 'blown away' by their set-up, which far exceeded her expectations of a typical care provider. Upon learning about the vacancy of experience coordinator, Charlene was excited to apply, feeling this was an opportunity that she couldn't let pass by.

Taking a leading role in both these programmes, Charlene will be working closely with the residents and providing activities to inspire and delight them.

Sophie Walls
Sophie WallsJob Title:Belong at Home Area Manager

Qualifications: Level 5 in Leadership Management.

Sophie has worked for the organisation for over 11 years, starting her career as a support worker in the village households. Two years later, Sophie was appointed to the role of senior support worker and quickly progressed to the role of lead senior support worker, before joining Belong's home care team.

Sophie has completed a level 5 in leadership Management and in 2013 Sophie won the Excellence in Resident Handling Award at the Regional Care Awards and went on to the National Care Awards and won the National award.
