Westvale House is situated within the Sankey Valley Park area of Warrington in Cheshire. It is a purpose-built care home for older people that require residential and general nursing care. In addition they provide end of life/ palliative care and care for young people with physical disabilities. The home is set in beautifully landscaped gardens with outdoor seating and easy access from all downstairs lounges.

A team of highly qualified and attentive staff really focus on the individual needs of residents with a tailored care plan for each person. And their dedication can be seen across the board - in cooking, hospitality and organising activities.

The team are also very keen to promote a home from home atmosphere recognising that this is the residents' home and they want them to feel relaxed and comfortable and safe. They offer a wide range of activities, have regular entertainment and really encourage families to get involved. They recently had a group of relatives help in the garden as well as attending a relative focus group.

Why not arrange a visit and see for yourself!

In the last few months, me and my family had to make the difficult choice to put my mum in nursing care due to an injury from an accident.
My mum is still young and lovely Westvale House has exceeded our expectations. All the staff are kind and dedicated to the residents care and wellbeing, there is
always someone to talk to and the manager follows any issues up quickly. Food and cleanliness is spot on and she enjoys activities each day.
Knowing mum is well cared for has helped me at such a stressful time.
Reply from Matthew Bell, General Manager at Barchester Westvale House Care HomeThank you for your comments, we do realise how stressful it can be to move a loved one into a home and we all really want to support everyone during that time. Thank you again for the positive feedback.

Food - Variety and quality top class. Chefs always will offer an alternative dish to residents. Very much appreciated.
Less TV and more getting everyone involved - the sound of the TV takes over the room.
Room - often clothes just put on the top shelf in wardrobe and on the chair. No idea whether
clean or worn. Wardrobe full of items for use, as is the toilet room - more like a storeroom. Shelf piled up with razers - this is a new occurrence - storage of items is now on the packs in there. Not good.
Reply from Matthew Bell, General Manager at Barchester Westvale House Care HomeThank you for these comments, I will feedback to the housekeeping department about the clothes and ensure this is addressed asap. Thank you though for the other kind comments.

My neighbour went into hospital and then to the home for respite.
While in the home he has been very happy with his room, the care he is getting, in fact, he wants to stay in the home instead of returning to his house.
I think they are trying to get him in as a resident because of his standard of
care.

Sadly my Nan spent her last times of 96 years in Westvale. She was sadly let down by Westvale and we are extremely disappointed some 6 months later to still be waiting for answers to our concerns. We are disappointed that we were taken in by the brochure, look and feel. It wasn’t what it seems and a
significant family regret.
Reply from Matthew Bell, General Manager at Barchester Westvale House Care HomeHello, thank you for the comments. If you would like to get in touch with me directly at the home I’m sure we can resolve any outstanding issues. I took over the management of the home in January 2018 and I’m keen to ensure all our residents are well cared for and treated with dignity and respect at all times. Please do get in touch and I will do my best to resolve any outstanding concerns. Many thanks, Matthew Bell, General Manager

Very happy with this care home. They look after my Mum really well. It is expensive but I suppose you get what you pay for and only the best will do for my Mum. Each year the prices seem to go up a lot which leaves a slight sting in the tail but overall a very good care home.

I have researched many care homes and my mum stayed in several for respite care.
I can honestly say this is the best we have experienced. The staff and the facilities are second to none. The caring nature and atmosphere here make it a pleasure to visit and my mum is so happy here. The refurbishment
has made this look like a 5 star hotel and the activities are always a pleasure. Highly recommend here!

Following a severe stroke, my aunt moved into Barchester Westvale House Care Home in November 2013 with a life expectancy of 3-4 months. She was totally bed-ridden and unable to do anything for herself.

She survived for 4 years, this I attribute to the excellent care she received whilst in Barchester

Westvale House Care Home.

Whenever we visited (I did vary the times to check on her) she was always clean and tidy and she thoroughly enjoyed her meals.

My aunt could be extremely difficult at times, the staff coped with her well and were courteous and she was dealt in a dignified manner, her privacy was upheld always.

The staff were very welcoming to us and coffee offered if the trolley was doing its rounds!

Can with all honesty recommend Barchester Westvale House Care Home wholeheartedly.

Patients having to wait far too long for attention when requesting assistance ie commode request and when finishing on the toilet due to a shortage of staff however hard the work. Not a satisfactory situation in the morning that people are being washed, dressed and pills while using the commode, due
to pressure on staff - again a lack of numbers. Eating utensils not up to standard in cleanliness.

I took a long time to find a suitable home for dad and Westvale House was the best that I saw. I am glad that dad was there. He was an 'easy' gentleman to have to cope for as he was quiet and cooperative. However, he was unable to talk and this was real frustration as often the care staff didn't have
the time to be with him or understand him.
His room was adequate but could have been cleaner. However, overall, the staff were really good and kind to dad and gave him the best care they could.

Mu mum stayed at Westvale for one month. The care was palliative as she had suffered a huge stroke in November, that coupled with her Alzheimers was all too much for her sadly.
The care received was very good and carers were all respectful and caring towards her.
I have only praise and thanks for
the team that took care of my dear mum.
I would highly recommend to anyone.

My sister and I went in every day to help by feeding Mum lunch. My mother was a resident in Westvale Nursing Home for around 3 years. Her care and the support she was given was excellent. All the staff did their utmost to make her comfortable, as Mum did not leave her bed for around 2-3 years.
The
only comment I can make is that there was never enough staff. The staff there worked so hard to look after the residents and the main nurse on the upstairs floor was excellent at her job, nothing was too much trouble.

In my experience, there is not enough staff for all the patients.
They do not do enough activities for the bed-bound patients that are aware of being bored.
Patients are left too long to be changed etc i.e Staff shortages.
My sister is happy here but does get depressed with the lack of activities
etc.
You need to employ people just for activities.
Reply from Katie Bond, General Manager at Barchester Westvale House Care HomeThank you for your review, I am sorry to hear your experience of Westvale is not as we would have wanted. Westvale continuously reviews its staffing in relation to dependency of our residents, currently Westvale is one of the highest staffed homes in the area. We have had a gap in our activities, which we have now filled with a full time activities coordinator. I can understand how this has impacted on life in the home, however our coordinators have lots planned for the residents at Westvale, including our Open Day on 16th June.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.585)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.585) out of 10 for Barchester Westvale House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 24 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.585 for Barchester Westvale House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (187 Excellents x 5) + (77 Goods x 4) + (19 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 284 Ratings = 4.585
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Westvale House Care Home is based on 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 61 registered maximum number of service users is 12.2, which has been reached with 24 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
