Excellent care given throughout stay. Staff gave above and beyond care through end of life.
Shirley was very happy, met new friends, and she loved all the staff and relationships with them. Enjoyed the music afternoons.

Room could do with updating.

I just want to say how good Howgate House is and how good the staff are with my mum, they go the extra mile in all her care, they get her into the lounge when they can, even though she is bedbound. They feed her and are so respectful of her needs, and I have no complaints of the care she is given.

Sadly my dad past away on the 30th of November, after being in Howgate for less than 2 week. No fault of anyone. This home is a wonderful place, and all the staff are fantastic every single one. they showed so much love compassion to both my dad Sid, and also me and my wife.

Many thanks from Terry and Hazel

We were very lucky to secure a place at Howgate Care Home in Idle.
Dad was welcomed into Howgate Care Home in May 2023 following a massive stroke. It was a difficult time for Dad and the family as we all adjusted to him moving from regular independent life to a care home.
The administration team and management helped us navigate the process and provided endless support.
The care staff are absolutely amazing, they cared for Dad like he was one of their own family. He was encouraged to retain some independence. They genuinely cared for his physical and mental health.
They recognised when he was home sick or his mood was low and made time to chat, making him feel like 'somebody' when he felt like a 'nobody'.
Staff encouraged him to take part in some of the numerous activities available, when he was reluctant they brought the activities to him.
During his time in Howgate he was always treated with the upmost respect and dignity.

We would absolutely recommend this care home.

~Having looked at 2 other homes, I picked up on Howgate's sense of homeliness, which was not apparent at others. We were very pleased to find that the staff are caring, dedicated individuals who genuinely enjoy their role, which resulted in a low staff turnover and familiar faces throughout. Fun activities were put on daily by enthusiastic staff & excellent visiting entertainers, family members encouraged to join in & be part of the community. Staff sorted out any necessary admin without prompting and were always proactive in keeping me updated with mum's progress. I found Howgate a compassionate, caring, professional & homely place and was very pleased with all the staff and the care received by my mum, which is all that we could have hoped for.

My mum has been at Howgate House for just over a year. We've been please with the care she receives, the team are very friendly and always have a chat with her and keep her spirits up.
She's a private person and despite trying to make sure she has a visitor most days, she does spend a lot of time in her room which can lead to loneliness , the staff are great at encouraging her to join in the activities.

She needed extra care this year after a fall in her room and we were pleased with the level of care she received whilst practically bed bound. The meals are lovely and always lots of drinks and snacks provided inbetween. She has a big room which we have tried to make as homely as we can with her own bedding, tv, photos and cushions etc. we have peace of mind knowing there is someone available 24 hours if she needs it and you can't put a price on that. We've needed to speak to management on a couple of occasions and they're very obliging and always resolve any issues.

There is a lack of warmth and welcome at Howgate that is not conducive to resident wellbeing and visitor confidence.

I am comparing Howgate to what I consider to be better care homes (from personal experience).

What a wonderful care home Howgate is made more so by the excellent staff and management who are all pleasant and willing to listen at any time. They all strive to make sure the residents are safe and as happy as they could possibly be. What more could you ask from this wonderful caring care home, so from the cleaners to the managers a big well done.

The staff are friendly, but there are not enough of them. We are consistently being told the staff-to-residents ratio is correct, but it absolutely isn't. The staff-to-residents needs ratio is not being met. When my mum moved into Howgate in January 2023, she had a shower every week, now she's lucky if she gets one a month. I get costs are rising but this should not be to the detriment of the residents.

My aunt has come into Howgate House since 28/12/23. Both her physical and mental health has improved. She has put on wight and is enjoying the food. She has settled in quickly. She has as many personal possessions around her as necessary to make her feel at home. The carers are all lovely with tons and tons of patience, very kind and respectful. The management staff are all approachable and sort out any concerns efficiently, it's all good.

Brilliant. Right from the start of my mum's assessment to acceptance, the admin staff have been so helpful and really pleasant and friendly towards my mum and us. The carers are exceptional, they all know her and have a good laugh with her and us. The activities are varied and often and the two ladies are bonkers. They are all truly great and I wouldn't want my mum anywhere else. Thank you all the team.

My mum was lucky to be sent to Howgate House Care Home for her palliative care. I couldn’t have wished for more caring staff, my mum was made to feel very welcome and settled in immediately. The staff and residents have been so supportive of Mum. The staff and manager genuinely care for their residents. It’s one of the hardest decisions to make, putting a loved one into care. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend sending your loved one to Howgate House. I can’t thank them enough for caring for my mum in her final days.

Carers were kind and helpful with my Cousin.
The home is dated and could do with a facelift, the home does not smell like some homes but on a few occasions I had to clean the floor as it was dirty, cleaners came in to take over, they are overworked and maybe could do with more staff. Things go missing and no one tries to find out why.
Had problems trying to get out of the home at weekends as all carers were busy, this happened a few times to other visitors.

I wouldn't recommend this home.

My husband was recently admitted to Howgate House Care Home and I can't sing their praises enough. Sadly, following his diagnosis of Alzheimer's six years ago and having cared for him myself at home throughout this last year has become increasingly challenging. He is now residing at Howgate House Care Home permanently. The manager and the rest of the staff have been amazingly supportive to us. They have been so reassuring and my husband is receiving excellent care. In a safe, clean, comfortable environment where his needs are met, that makes both of us content.
