We all had a very nice couple of hours together in the communal area of the home to celebrate sixty years of marriage between my mother and father. Tea and cakes laid on for us made for a good little celebration.

My mum is 101-years-old, she is well looked after, all staff are angels. Management are very approachable if ever I need to speak to them. I am so happy with everything about the home.

My mother-in-law lives at Colton Lodges Care Home. On every visit she looks happy and content. The care team are great. The home has new managers and they are in on weekends, which is unheard of and they are very approachable.
My husband and I sleep better knowing she is in great care.

I’m the son in law of a resident on Whitkirk House. I can’t visit often due to my work commitments but I know Dad is well cared for. We are kept up to date about Dads care each month which is reassuring. New management team in place who have the right attitude to bring changes and listen to suggestions
instead of dismissing them. The care and housekeeping team are great and look after my family when they visit. Thank you to everybody for keeping dad safe.

I have just moved my mother for the first time since lockdown. I was very impressed with the new procedures to meet my mother. I was able to talk to her, and we could hold a conversation, which she could hear clearly. The PPE in place for us was good to allow for our safety and that of the other visitors.

These times are unprecedented so I appreciate challenging however that applies to residents as well as staff. We recently suffered a bereavement and as my aunt was unable to leave the home to attend the service we asked if she could be allowed to watch it online. She is 91 and not used to technology
so I made this clear to the manager that she would need help. On the day in question, she was given the iPad and left on her own without a clue what to do with it. She did not see the service. This was goodbye to someone she had shared a home with for over 20 years, that moment has now passed. We went up to see her the day after to say hi through the window. We could not do so as all the gates were locked. Two had padlocks and only the groundsman have the keys we were told and don’t work weekends and the third was a combination lock and none of the members of staff on duty knew the code. God forbid had there been a fire.
Tried to ring the manager to discuss but no callback.

The staff are caring and understanding of my mother's needs. However, I am critical of the laundry facilities, i.e items go missing or are sometimes spoilt by high wash temperatures.

We have recently introduced a new tagging system to help prevent items from going missing. Unfortunately, the machines do wash at a high temperature for infection control. I would ask that any delicate items are given to staff to wash in a different manner to prevent these issues from occurring.

My husband was in Colton Lodge and he was really well looked after and the staff were 100% caring and kind. The food was a high standard and the room was just like being at home, so nice and comfortable and it just looked like a hotel. They were always ready to answer any questions I had to ask.

Since the home has been taken over from another owner, it is dirty and needs a re-vamp.
I'm not even sure how often my mum gets bathed as she always looks dirty with greasy hair.
Clothes are washed to death and creased which makes the resident look even worse.
They are put in the wardrobes and drawers
without any care and attention.
We also now have to label our own clothes!
Sometimes there doesn't seem to be enough staff to the ratio of residents, and depending on what time you go, residents are left on their own in the lounge, not safe when they suffer from dementia.
The home always smells of urine, which makes me wonder how often incontinent residents are changed?
Can I, however, say that I am not blaming the carers who work there as they do a great job with the limited resources they have and little wage.

Overall I am satisfied that my wife is in a safe place and properly cared for. The staff as a general rule really do care and are excellent.
The only downside is that I believe that the fabric of the building, whilst kept clean and homely, is ready for refurbishment.

Mum receives very good care. Some of the carers go the extra mile to help; this is very commendable when on occasion the unit is obviously short staffed.
The activities coordinator is very good and there is a good weekly timetable of activities. Appointments with a professional e.g dentist/continence
nurse are not always passed on and mum misses that appointment. Overall, however, Colton Lodges is a very good care home.

Danielle

Danielle Longthorn

Job Title: Home Manager

“For me, kind care is treating everyone with respect and dignity, while offering choice and promoting independence.”


As a Registered Nurse, Danielle has gained a wealth of experience in providing care and nursing support to elderly people, to enrich their lives. She is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards in care and quality of life for Residents.


Danielle chose to become Home Manager at Colton Lodges as she closely shares HC-One’s vision in aiming to provide the kindest care for each and every Resident. She extends this caring approach to her Colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support to Residents in a way that they gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Danielle remarked:


“Making a difference to people’s lives, it’s a pleasure to see our Resident’s living happy and fulfilled lives.”


Outside of work, Danielle is a devoted wife and mother to two boys who enjoys travelling to America, she hopes to visit all 52 states in her lifetime. In her spare time, she is a big supporter of football, rugby, American football and ice hockey.
