Mam was only in for a short stay to help her get back on her feet and mobile after three weeks in hospital but the care she received was excellent. The staff were fantastic, really friendly and got her back to her normal self in no time. As her stay was during Covid-19, I felt like I was ringing all
the time but nothing was too much trouble and once Mam’s test came back negative I could visit her in their garden.

The management and cares have given my parents the very best of care and go beyond what is expected of them, giving them dignified treatment, due care, stimulus to eat, immediate medical attention when required, watching over them safely and securely whilst helping keep their sense of humour active.

I found out my father had died through a third party, and missed his funeral because this care home took the word of an individual who they never did a check on. I was the only blood relative alive (his son), how can this incompetence be tolerated, I have no closure and do not know whether my father
has been buried or cremated, his last wishes was to be with my grandmother and grandfather in Durham. I am still awaiting a death certificate, and cannot believe the incompetence of this care home.
Reply from Chris Beastall, Director at Holly Lodge Care HomeThank you Thomas. Firstly, it was a pleasure to care for your father over the last few years – he was delightful, and we believe enjoyed his time with the Holly Lodge family. Since your review, we have spoken – and we hope made it clear that your father’s step-daughter was listed as next of kin. She took care of his affairs. Unfortunately, and despite having mental capacity, your father never informed us of your existence. It’s not to say you weren’t in his thoughts, but he never mentioned you nor would we question his step-daughter as your father’s named next of kin. We wholeheartedly understand you being upset at his passing, as are we – but please rest assured - we always consult with a next of kin and or those with active involvement in a resident's well-being in our care. Having spoken to you we believe you are somewhat appeased and have contacted your father’s step-daughter to reconcile any concerns. We wish you the best for the future and of course, fondly remember your father.

My mother-in-law is receiving palliative care and had work to be completed to modify her bedroom at home. Organised to stay at Holly Lodge for the week. She was warmly welcomed and looked after well during her stay. A huge thanks to the whole team.

I have found the staff to be very supportive to residents and their family. They make themselves available to speak to if required and try to work together with families and residents to promote quality of life. The building is well maintained with clean public and residential areas, giving a homely
feel.

Mam is happy at Holly Lodge and is treated well. She enjoys the live entertainment with the other residents and would enjoy more of it if possible. The kitchen staff have been fantastic, making sure Mam enjoys her meals and will make alternative meals on request. The assistant manager is excellent in
dealing with any issues/concerns promptly and with a caring attitude at all times. More attention needs to be taken when ordering medication as there have been times tablets have run out of supply due to not ordering on time. This makes Mam very anxious when she is told there are none left.

My sister has been a resident for the past three years and during that time she has been given excellent care and attention and treated with dignity which in my opinion is essential.
The management and staff are always friendly and helpful when needed. I have no hesitation in recommending Holly Lodge

Mum is happy with the standard of care at Holly Lodge and she manages to keep her independence as much as possible. Her quality of life is maintained and she has put on weight after being underweight. The care staff work around her Parkinson's symptoms and offer assistance with mobility.

Dad has been in Holly Lodge for a number of years and I have been generally happy with his care. There have been some issues with the quality and suitability of food offered to him and cleanliness of his surroundings but these seem to have been resolved recently.
Also, the current manager has been
careful to monitor and retrain staff where necessary.

My husband recently had a one week respite break at Holly Lodge. As a family, naturally we had reservations and concerns about his stay, However we were very soon put at east thanks to the lovely warm welcome and the care, understanding and consideration from the manager and every member of the wonderful
team at Holly Lodge. We felt my husbands needs were met with dignity and compassion and he was safe and happy during his stay. Holly Lodge will be our first choice for any further respite breaks. Thank you all.

The ground floor Senior Carer once again quickly identified that there was something "not quite right" with Mam (as she knows Mam so so well, it really helps as the Senior Carer is consistently based on the Ground Floor) and she promptly requested the GP to visit. Despite Mam not showing any signs of
infection, she knew Mam was not "herself" and the GP diagnosed/treated Mam for a chest infection. Once again this prevented Mam being potentially admitted to hospital, as she was assessed and treated very quickly.
The Senior Carer always always shows true kindness, compassion and genuine affection in her day-to-day care and support to Mam - she even took Mam to the local shop in her wheelchair whilst on her lunch break, this shows that she really really does care and demonstrates that she always goes the extra mile. Thank you so much for all that you do, words cannot express how grateful we are to you for really caring for Mam, what will we do when you shortly start your maternity leave.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.686)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.686) out of 10 for Holly Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.686 for Holly Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (184 Excellents x 5) + (47 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 245 Ratings = 4.686
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Holly Lodge Care Home is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 41 registered maximum number of service users is 8.2, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
