The management and all the staff at Hillside Lodge are amazing. They are always on hand to answer any questions I have regarding my mum's care. The place is spotlessly clean and my mum's room is lovely. She enjoys the food and joins in the activities. She has made friends in the home and is happy and
comfortable. At 91 what more could you ask for?

There are some lovely decent care staff working here. They are kind and caring and that counts for a lot. That’s the best that can be said about this place. I’m going to focus on the food. It’s appalling.
Meat is almost always cheap pork. Beef or lamb is rare and chicken is seemingly banned. Most days
the veg is mash and swede. Forget about fresh broccoli, cauliflower, tender stem, green beans or asparagus, even cabbage is a rare treat. Evening meals are always heavily processed sugary economy children’s meals. Think Spam or tinned spaghetti followed by tinned fruit salad and watery jelly. Don’t believe the promotional glossy pictures and don’t fall for the company platitudes about the care given to nutritional and balanced meals.
There is never anything special, such as a decent bit of cheese, maybe avocado in the salad or a decent bread roll. This is the cheapest possible food available. It’s the stuff of the workhouse and this company should be ashamed of themselves.
Reply from Hannah Burke, Marketing Executive at Hillside Lodge Care HomeWe are sorry to read your comments and from the sound of it, the food and dining experience is well below our expected standards. We offer a wide and delicious menu based on seasonal and fresh produce, created with the help of our residents. The menu is balanced to ensure nutritious and tasty options are available every day, plus residents can choose to have alternatives if they fancy something else on the day. We will be investigating your comments with the team at the home and our hospitality services team and will be sure to come back to you. Thank you.

Mum came in for respite care after a stay in hospital. Her experience has been extremely positive. She has really enjoyed her stay and loved making new friends and joining in all activities. The staff have been lovely, very kind and caring. She has gained her confidence back to her cheerful, confident
self. I want to say a huge heartfelt thank you.

I have been coming to Hillside Lodge for just over one year, a very pleasant experience during a difficult time in my friend's life. In the final hours and after, would like to commend the night staff for the dignity, respect and love shown to my friend. May you be heartened in your specialist care.
Much appreciated.

The care my mother received from the staff at Hillside Lodge was outstanding and nothing was too much trouble. They were caring and compassionate at all times. My mother was made as comfortable as possible right up until she died on 22/02/23. We as a family appreciate the help and support received from
the home.

My dad means everything to me and us as a family. It's very difficult to pass that level of care to someone else. However, since he has been a resident at Hillside my dad has improved, he looks clean and fresh and I know he likes the staff, he doesn't tell me that, I just feel it, by the way, he shouts
out to them and has banter with them. It's good for us to know he is in safe hands and well-fed. What more can you ask?

After a long period of time in hospital my Gran was offered a room very quickly, myself and my mother went to visit the home and from ringing the doorbell to leaving we felt that this was the home that we would like my gran to be placed in the staff were very friendly and the home is so homely something
that my gran would love.
My gran was discharged from hospital and when arriving was being sick and her health had deteriorated but thanks to the nurse in charge and the team my Gran was taken to the BGH where sadly she passed.
My gran did not get a lot of time at Hillside but we know that she would have loved it and nothing was an issue when asked everyone was so caring and had a loving approach to care you can tell as soon as you walk into the home how everyone is cared for and as a family we can not thank Hillside enough for what they did for my gran and I would recommend anyone to Hillside.

I would start by saying there are a few very caring and considerate workers - but they are overshadowed by insensitive, condescending people in charge. The food is diabolical - the choice is limited, mostly canned and frozen, childlike food. Fish finger sandwiches for an evening meal. Constructive criticism
was not appreciated and sadly I had too much of that for them as it is an appalling place. Personal care was a bare minimum - my husband had no access to his toilet room/it was too small to accommodate a stand aid anyway. It was five months of torture for him and anxiety and worry for me. So pleased we managed to get out. I feel for others who would like to get out and can't and there are a fair few of them. Dreadful place.

My mother came in for respite for two weeks but liked it that much she wanted to stay. And she settled in very quickly and was very concerned she would be sent home. The home is home now, with excellent care, staff are very caring and very approachable. Her room is very clean, and the staff sign when
cleaned. No complaints at all. It's very, very reassuring when I leave her; not had that peace of mind for years. So I must say thank you.
Reply from Katie Barnett, Marketing Executive at Hillside Lodge Care HomeThank you, Jeanette, for your positive feedback towards our home. We would visit often unannounced and everything was spot on, friendliness of staff, lovely clean smell fresh room. Mums bed and nighties spotlessly clean (my mum was bedridden). Mum quite content and peaceful. We would honestly recommend Hillside Lodge to anyone.

My friend and I had been friends for 25 years. Her husband and I were close friends and after his death I came regularly from Scotland to see her. The Covid pandemic meant I could not visit for two years, and now she was in care and receiving end-of-life care. Hillside Lodge made me welcome in mid-morning
and showed me to my friend's room. Gently they wakened her and left me to sit with her. A nurse/worker looks in every few minutes. They gave my friend sips of milk or water. Immobile she was comfortable, under beautiful embroidered bed sheets.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.828)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.828) out of 10 for Hillside Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.853 for Hillside Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (193 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 225 Ratings = 4.853
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hillside Lodge Care Home is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 50 registered maximum number of service users is 10, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
