Ty Eirin Care Home delivers residential and palliative care to up to 87 older people.

Situated in the village of Thomastown, South Wales, the home is half an hour’s drive from Cardiff. The village is largely residential but there are plenty of shops and amenities, including a theatre, in the adjacent village of Tonyrefail. There are opportunities for walks in the nearby Tyn-y-Bryn park and surrounding countryside.

There are daily activities with the goal of promoting a healthy social life and stimulating entertainment. The activities coordinator also arranges visiting entertainers and groups from the local community to engage with residents.

My grandfather came to Ty Eirin at the end of July and he's settled really well on Seaview. Staff are all friendly and make sure all his needs are met on a daily basis while treating him with care and dignity, he has up and down days but staff are always there to comfort and reassure him and let him
know they are always there when he needs them. They like to encourage him to get involved in different activities with the activity team, my grandfather has made many friends on Seaview with the residents and staff and always loves to have a chat and joke with them.
Me and my family are really happy with care he receives and seeing how happy and settled he has become. We are kept informed with any health related problems and any updates. We love to see photos of him on the Ty Eirin page when they have artists in their day center and taking part in all different activities and having day out trips.

I would like to thank all the staff and carers for taking care of Mam while she was at Ty Eirin. Sadly, she passed away at the home on the 9th of June 2024, after a battle with dementia. I have to say that the palliative and then the end-of-life care was particularly excellent. The advice and support
during a very difficult time was wonderful. Thank you so much. I have previously made a statement about the situation with the phones at the home, there is an issue that when you phone you are passed back and forth between different floors and you are not able to get to the extension you need. This happens mostly at night, but does happen during the day as well. A direct number for each floor could rectify this problem maybe, just a suggestion. This problem hopefully will be solved for future residents and their families. Overall my rating of Ty Eirin is 5/5 and I would recommend the home to any future prospective resident. Thanks again for all you did for Mam.
Reply from Honor Keatley, Managing Director at Ty Eirin Care HomeI am so sorry to hear about your Mam. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to write a review at what must be a very difficult time for you. I have noted your comments on the phone system and will see what I can do to rectify. I am so glad that you felt your Mam received excellent care and it sounds like you did too. Thanks once again. With best wishes, Managing Director.

Mam has been at the home for 10 months, it's been amazing from the start but in the last 3 months she has been her happiest, not sure why but it makes me so happy to see how she is. She thinks she works there, so she is happy to do daily chores of dishes, clearing tables etc. and helping all the residents
and staff. Mam thinks shes in charge of the canteen, her old job, everyone goes with whatever ever job role she is in that day but all I really want is for someone to be kind and speak nicely to her which she gets every day and always looks well presented when I visit which is a lot. Her room is always spotless and has nice food and loves it when there is a singer or concert. I can't ask for more, thank you Ty Eirin.
Reply from Honor Keatley, Managing Director at Ty Eirin Care HomeThanks so much for your review, it sounds like your mam is having a great time and is enjoying having purpose in her life. Thank you so much for sharing this picture of your mam, happily going about her chores. With best wishes.

My mother is at this care home. She is always happy when I visit and always well looked after. Staff interact with her all the time. She loves the activities and the food as she has put on weight, which is a good thing. I sleep at night knowing she is looked after and cared for. She never cries when
I leave which is great as I know she feels safe and cared for.

My mother-in-law has been in Rest Bay Ty Eirin for just over a year. She is well looked after, always clean and tidy whenever I call which is quite often. The staff here are lovely and nothing is too much trouble. The activities team make sure most people are catered for with different events/activities
for the residents to enjoy/partake in. I recommend Ty Eirin Care Home to anyone considering coming into a care home.

This is an excellent care home.
The manager is always willing to discuss any queries and explain how the care home functions. She listens to any personal worries and tries her best to alleviate family tensions which we have experienced. Another staff member also keeps my mother updated on care and
requirements both medical and emotional. All the other girls are always helpful with regard to financial and general needs. Sorry if I have not named all but to be honest we have no reason to complain about any of the staff's attitude or commitment to work.

My dad has been a resident at Ty Eirin Care Home since July 2023. He came there from another care home, he is very very well looked after, he is always clean and well-kept in his appearance and is treated with the highest respect and dignity too which he deserves, the staff treat me as if I was family

The provision in the care home is outstanding. The care and compassion shown by all the staff is exceptional. They don’t just care for the residents, but their care is extended to the wider families of the residents and nothing is too much for any of the staff. I have found the support group really
useful and it provides an opportunity for family members to meet other people in similar circumstances.

My dad has been on Lower Deck for roughly 18 months and is currently being looked after with end-of-life care. Every single member of staff on Lower Deck has been absolutely outstanding from the moment my dad arrived and even more so during these last few weeks when he has been deteriorating. The staff
work tirelessly every day and night to provide a truly remarkable level of care for everyone on Lower Deck and they all do it with a smile on their face, always going the extra mile to look after both the residents and their family members. Knowing that my dad is being cared for by these awesome people has made the experience of him being here so much easier. I honestly cannot fault any member of staff from the nurses to the cleaners, they make it a point to get to know the residents, providing a really amazing atmosphere in the home. I cannot thank the staff enough for everything they have done for my dad and our family, they all deserve serious recognition for the job they do.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.785)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.785) out of 10 for Ty Eirin Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 40 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 40 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.785 for Ty Eirin Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (385 Excellents x 5) + (70 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 469 Ratings = 4.785
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ty Eirin Care Home is based on 40 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 90 registered maximum number of service users is 18, which has been reached with 40 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
