Ty Eirin Care Home delivers residential and palliative care to up to 87 older people.

Situated in the village of Thomastown, South Wales, the home is half an hour’s drive from Cardiff. The village is largely residential but there are plenty of shops and amenities, including a theatre, in the adjacent village of Tonyrefail. There are opportunities for walks in the nearby Tyn-y-Bryn park and surrounding countryside.

Every single bedroom has en-suite facilities. The home is brightly decorated and airy and features sociable lounge and dining areas, an activities room and a garden with a patio.

The dedicated team is experienced and compassionate, they see each resident as a unique individual, reflecting this throughout their person-centred care. The care team has access to the latest care plan technology and will take time to get to know you, your family and all of your favourite things.

There are daily activities with the goal of promoting a healthy social life and stimulating entertainment. The activities coordinator also arranges visiting entertainers and groups from the local community to engage with residents.

The home’s kitchen staff prepare weekly food menus, taking into account people’s preferences and dietary needs.

The staff are lovely friendly and engage with my Mother, some better than others. My rating is related to my Mothet's respect, dignity and person-centred care. Her clothes are going missing namely her trousers. In total 11 pairs have been purchased over the past 15 months and until today she had 2 pairs
in her wardrobe at the most. Raised time and time again with both managers only to be fed a catalogue of excuses as to why her trousers had gone missing. All clothes are labelled with a marker pen, care home labels and buttons. We have purchased net bags that can accommodate her laundry again labelled, they have gone missing. Purchased a laundry basket, this has broken, no underwear 18 pairs purchased only 2 in her room. Her bin has been removed from her room (apparently this was a staff decision as she was putting her used pads in it, where is she supposed to put them) 3 used pads on the bathroom floor. The DVD player missing, and other resident's clothes in her room. Not been on any trips.

My husband has been a resident at Ty Eirin Care Home for eight months.
He is looked after well in every aspect e.g. cleanliness, feeding, dressing, entertainment, his physical health and his mental health is looked after. My husband is very happy with everything.

The difficult decision to put a cherished loved one into a home is heartbreaking, the guilt is sometimes unbearable. Our mum has been a resident for a while. The treatment and care she has received have been over and above anything we would have imagined. Not just her, Dad too has been welcomed and
cared for. Mum's recent health problem has been handled quickly, efficiently and more than ever, reiterating how much the staff really care for her well-being. We are all so very grateful.
Reply from Honor Keatley, Managing Director at Ty Eirin Care HomeIt is indeed a huge decision, with a multitude of emotions that go with it.
I'm glad your family's experience has been such a positive one.

My review is focused on the staff as they are the most important cog in the wheel. All staff are wonderful with my mum. Friendly and always on hand. Couldn't ask for a better team to look after my mum. I thank each and everyone for helping my mum have a beautiful day. Thank you.

The staff are always welcoming and helpful, the only downfall is washing goes to laundry and some don’t come back and I seem to buy shower gel all the time, apart from that overall, it is always clean and tidy.

My mam went into Ty Eirin during the pandemic. We could not see inside or meet all the staff. Saying that, immediately I felt at ease as a numerous number of staff would video call me, call to give me an update, would always be happy to answer any questions I had on the millions of calls I made. Eventually,
it was open, I could meet the people who look after her, how wonderful, friendly and the most caring people I could meet. All staff know me by name and the care they give my mam is 110% I couldn't be happier knowing she is in excellent hands. Even when she has her stubborn days they are extremely patient with her. Well done and thank you to all.

I feel better care could be taken of the residents. I am also very sick and tired of dropping off toiletries to my mother, spending quite a bit of money each time to find they are never in her bathroom and no one knows where they are.

All staff at the home are very friendly and interact with my mother well. I only have one negative issue which is poor communication with the family over issues such as visiting etc. Social media is often used to post updates but not everyone uses social media. I feel the home's main website should
provide easily accessed and up to date information at all times.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.785)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.785) out of 10 for Ty Eirin Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 40 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 40 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.785 for Ty Eirin Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (385 Excellents x 5) + (70 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 469 Ratings = 4.785
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ty Eirin Care Home is based on 40 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 90 registered maximum number of service users is 18, which has been reached with 40 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
