My mother spent the last 26-months of her long life (nearly 101) at Sandfields. I was concerned about her going into care as she was very independent and also English wasn't her first language. However, a fall and broken hip left us forced us to get help. We tried live-in care, but this wasn't satisfactory as she found the inevitable changeover of personnel very stressful, and she was always worried about household problems.
Sandfields were brilliant - we had a very sociable period before the first lockdown, Mum was exceedingly well looked after and felt very relaxed. The pandemic obviously caused problems, but the staff were excellent at keeping us informed of visiting possibilities, new regulations etc. And they pulled the stops out for her 100th birthday - despite the fact that she could only see us through the window, she had a wonderful, memorable day.

The staff looked after her really well throughout. At the end, we were able to visit freely and felt she had every care.

The Sandfields team are so reassuring and knowledgeable. We had to move Dad from another care facility and sorting all this was much easier with the admin and nursing team being so helpful in offering information so we could make the right choices. Dad was treated with the utmost respect and care. The staff were interested in him, his life and all his accomplishments. As he was a palliative care resident, I was pleasantly surprised at how much support was shown to me and the family. The medical/nursing care was outstanding. Brilliant communication between staff and shifts. Regular checks were done, actions were taken, and I was kept up to date with all care and medical decisions. Food was excellent and tailor-made to suit Dad. His room was lovely and clean. When he passed, they had looked after both of us nonstop for 3-days, as I had wanted to be with him. I was shown real kindness. They looked after all the arrangements and advised me on the next steps. Highly recommend. Would use again.

Mum had been living an independent life in Cheltenham, with lots of friends and support. Then the pandemic happened and for a year she was without any real human contact and getting very depressed. I live abroad and was not able to visit and my sister was not allowed to travel. In January she had a massive stroke and after 4 months in hospital, Mum was discharged - no speech and very little cognition. She needed 24/7 care. It was very difficult finding the right care home - I looked at 15 options and had a checklist of criteria. A key element for mum was she needed to feel like she was part of a caring community - residents and staff, rather than a hospital environment - patients and nurses. Mum has settled in so well, physically looks amazing - taking part in lots of activities. When I visit I see all the staff engaging with the residents, and they really care. I spent a lot of time choosing the right place for mum- and Sandfields has exceeded my expectations.

Not being able to make a comparison with similar experiences, my stay at Sandfields has been a helpful and pleasant one. All staff have been supportive and friendly, but also displaying the necessary respect. Need for support has been addressed immediately and without long delays. Initial introduction to staff and other residents eased communication and settling into a new environment. A choice of food at mealtimes and consideration of personal dietary needs made meals a happy experience. Activities offered were physical and social benefits. I would have no hesitation in recommending Sanfields to others.

Making the decision to place your loved one in a care home is hugely difficult. Having explored options at other care homes Sandfields was head and shoulders above others for their personal yet professional approach. Excellent communication and support as a family member is important to me. Any issues are discussed and rectified, plus the new Manager is absolutely a breath of fresh air and so very kind and diligent. I am able to have peace of mind and know my loved one is happy, stimulated and content. That's priceless, and something I feel other homes I looked at promised but wouldn't have delivered once the razzle and dazzle wore off if I had been blinded by so many promises and publicity. At the end of the day, I needed somewhere that gave superb care and I found it. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

It's simple. Sandfields gave my father a reason to go on living. Within a very few months he recovered from being an anxious, depressed and frail old man to the Father I'd known for the previous 85 years or so. You can't single out any one thing - I think it's down to the very positive atmosphere about the place.

I am very relieved that we found such a lovely home for Dad, and all the more so during the current coronavirus crisis. I had experienced a lot of doubt and guilt last year during the early weeks of Dad's residence and was comforted and reassured by advice and support given by care staff and by the other residents' families that I had met at the beginning of the process. As the pandemic spread, my feelings of guilt increased, but I can see now that there is no way that we could have looked after Dad at this time in the way that the team at Sandfields have looked after him. Not only are his care needs met and I can see that infection control is taken very seriously, but Dad is surrounded by team members who are all trying to make life as normal as possible and have stepped in to become Dad's extended family at a time when sadly we cannot visit. Every day a team member patiently helps Dad to call us by Skype and that daily connection has been a huge comfort to us all.

Mum has been at Sandfields now for a year and she is clearly very happy in the environment there. The staff on her unit and throughout the building are all caring and compassionate and all treat residents and visitors with the upmost respect. There is a true 'family ' atmosphere there.
Everyone is knowledgeable and understands the individual needs that various conditions bring. I cannot remember ever seeing any resident there without a bright smile on their face.
The facilities are second to none and maintained to a high standard. Rooms are able to be personalised and this enhances the well-being of any resident.

Especially in these strange times, I can say hand on heart that I would trust no other home to be looking out for my mum as they do at Sandfields

The care of my father-in-law has been extremely good at all times. When he had a bit of a temperature and requested a COVID-19 test he had this and the result was passed on to us as soon as it was available as well as to him personally.

Having the company of other people to communicate with, both staff and residents has greatly improved his mental wellbeing.

Well, what can I say, thank you so much for your care of Dad, who it seems everyone adores. Your care is excellent; to all staff, we as a family, say thank you. It's been tough as we cared for dad until we just couldn't cope, this broke us all to see him in a home, but at the end of the day, Dad now thinks he owns the home; and that's fine. A great big thank you, from all of us and our families.

I can't praise the staff and carers enough at Sandfields for the care, support and consideration they gave my mother over the 3 years she was there. Lovely people and always had confidence that they had my mother's best interests at heart. My only criticism is directed at the broader company and their administration team, getting account information or making any changes to funding was painful and extremely slow. It needs to be improved to match the professionalism of the care staff in the home.

Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Sandfields

Thank you for your positive review of Sandfields and the excellent level of care your mother received. It is lovely to hear your comments about the care team there, their professionalism and the personalised care they provided. As you have stated, the financial administration is not carried out by the home itself but your comments have been passed to our support office to review.

Malaika Charles
Malaika CharlesJob Title:Home Manager

I'm a qualified and experienced nurse – I've worked in hospitals and care homes for over twenty years.

I joined Care UK in 2014 and have worked my way up to clinical lead, deputy manager and now home manager.

No two days are ever the same here at Sandfields. Every resident is treated as an individual and according to their changing needs. My favourite part of the day is meeting with my team at the start of the day, receiving handovers from each unit and supporting colleagues to make decisions that will make a difference in the lives of the residents.

Outside of work, I'm very connected with my church and the local community. I also like to spend my free time going camping, sightseeing and connecting with friends and families all over the world via social media.
