I doubt being in care can ever be perfect, but the care Mum gets in Sandfields is as good a second-best to home as we can get. She is treated by all the staff as if she were a member of their own family. We cannot ask for more.

My Dad is clearly well looked after and feels comfortable in his new home, he is always nice and clean and well dressed, and I can tell he is happy. The staff have also made me feel comfortable and reassured me at sucha hard time during our dads settling in period, and now feel that they have become a massive part of our lives, which is inevitable for me and my sister who visit most days - but fills us with confidence.

My grandad has settled in very well into Sandfields. The other residents and staff have made him feel very welcome and out worries are no longer. He is a lot more settled compared to when he was at home, we are very pleased with him being here.

My sister has dementia (Alzheimers and vascular). Members of staff are excellent! They communicate very well. I visit daily. My sister cannot communicate. She cannot move without a hoist. She eats well but has to be fed. I am satisfied with her care. I find the agency staff ineffective (often language barrier). Entertainment very good for those who are able to enjoy it! Hairdresser excellent.

Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Sandfields

Thank you for your very positive feedback about Sandfields. We are delighted to hear your sister’s care is of an excellent standard and that she eats well. We are trying to minimise the use of agency staff. Those we use are regular so they know the residents and their standard of English is good.

The family have been very happy with the care that the team give to Dad. He is extremely well cared for and encouraged to take part in activities where appropriate. I cannot recommend Sandfields enough and especially under the care of one particular member of staff, who is an inspiration to her team. I wouldn't want Dad to be anywhere else.

My mum has been living at sandfields for almost five years. We have always been extremely happy with every aspect of her care and the overall Sandfield experience. There is a lovely family feel to Sandfields and every member of staff regardless of their position is very friendly, helpful and supportive. They all greet mum by her first name. All the staff on Bronte Unit have become like family members to us. Their care and kindness towards mum is exceptional. We can relax knowing she is in safe and reliable hands.

This review regards the care of my father on his last days of his life. Firstly, the staff were brilliant. Kind, caring, respectful and helpful and showed us all quite remarkable kindness.
They took the most wonderful care of Daddy.

The room was done in such a way as to make us feel calm, peaceful music, Daddy looking loved, clean, bedding clean, air into the room. We could not have asked for more in a terrible situation.

Facilities and staff are excellent. The staff all know my dad and his like and dislikes so they can give details care. Apart from a minor bugbear with the parking (not enough spaces). I can't praise the home enough and am very happy with the care my dad is receiving.

Our mum has been resident here over two years and has been very content with the facilities. The carers have been excellent looking after all the residents, in fact, many go above and beyond requirements throughout Austin Ward where dementia is common in all residents.

A big thank you to all the staff.

Since Dad has been in care, his treatment has been exceptional. He is comfortable and safe, which is what he needed after his dementia progressed after losing our mother. The staff are absolutely amazing in every way and he has begun to settle a lot more. The unit team leaders have gone above and beyond to keep Dad happy and safe. We will be forever grateful to them.

My father came to Sandyfields for short term respite care following a hospital visit. We were impressed by the general set up at Sandyfield, the kindness and professionalism of the carers. The rooms and the quality of the food. Areas, where there was room for improvement, were (1) staff cover over the weekends and (2) need for more equipment (we ended up hiring a Sara Stedy as there were insufficient for all residents)

Reply from Samantha Debenham, Personal Assistant at Sandfields

Thank you for your lovely review of Sandfields. We are delighted that you were impressed with the care, the rooms and the food here. As you know, during your father’s stay here we had to assess his moving and handling needs on a daily basis and we were trialling various pieces of equipment. The...

Both my parents reside at Sandfields on different units. They are both cared for amazingly and we are thrilled with the attention and support they get. The staff often organize for my mother to visit my father on his unit for coffee and meals. All the staff are amazing, cheerful, friendly and very supportive. They couldn't be in better hands.

Review from Sylvia D (Sister of Resident) published on 4 September 2018 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

I had been very impressed with the care and helpfulness shown by all the staff and carers. However, I was rather disturbed when I sat with my sister during a supper, to see the dining staff eating sandwiches, crisps and cake in between serving residents with bare hands, and then serving at the same time. The supper that evening was rather sparse (one chipolata with mash, a sandwich wedge on a saucer with no salad or crisps as stated on the menu). I do not begrudge the kind carers picking at the food, but the cleanliness factor troubled me.

All of Sandfields staff have been exceptional. They have helped us with every step along the way.

It is not an easy decision choosing a care home but we are very pleased that we chose Sandfields. If I need to move to a care home myself in the future then I would be delighted to move into Sandfields because I would know I would be looked after with care and dignity.

Malaika Charles
Malaika CharlesJob Title:Home Manager

I'm a qualified and experienced nurse – I've worked in hospitals and care homes for over twenty years.

I joined Care UK in 2014 and have worked my way up to clinical lead, deputy manager and now home manager.

No two days are ever the same here at Sandfields. Every resident is treated as an individual and according to their changing needs. My favourite part of the day is meeting with my team at the start of the day, receiving handovers from each unit and supporting colleagues to make decisions that will make a difference in the lives of the residents.

Outside of work, I'm very connected with my church and the local community. I also like to spend my free time going camping, sightseeing and connecting with friends and families all over the world via social media.
