Winchcombe Place in Newbury is a purpose-built care home offering high-quality residential care and respite care for older people, including those who are living with dementia.

Each en-suite bedroom has its own flat screen TV, phone and internet connections, and ground floor rooms offer direct access to the garden. Residents love the hair and beauty salon, café, cinema room and library and there are also regular activities in the vintage-themed lounge and activity room.

The welcome received for my mother in law when she was accepted into Winchcombe Place has been so very refreshing.
I have been fully supported in setting up her room, her new home, for her in time for her discharge from hospital. The help given has been so appreciated and there wasn't one member
of staff who didn't offer to support me in one way or another.
All the staff that I have met, when visiting my mum in law, have been so friendly and supportive of her and she is in good spirits as she is settling in.
We are looking forward to being able to visit and have family time together where she is able to participate and it will be lovely to see her getting involved in the various activities that happen there.

Mum has recently moved into Winchcombe Place due to failing memory. The staff have been welcoming and flexible, making Mum's move very straight forward. Mum's room is clean and bright with access to a small patio area for summer. The Manager has been extremely accommodating and made it very easy for
us to bring in pictures and photographs to decorate the room and a bird feeder and birdbath for the garden. The decision to leave her home has not been an easy one for Mum but since the move, Mum seems much happier and really enjoys the stimulation of regular company and the range of activities that Winchcombe has been able to offer. I have been very reassured with our choice of Winchcombe Place and I am particularly pleased with Mum's obvious improvement in quality of life.

Entering, staff are friendly and helpful. The residence have choice of rooms for company o for being their own. Today I joined my sister and other residents for a church service and communion. They also do other activities, various. There is also a first-class cafe where they can go with family or friends,
well-stocked. Also a nice garden with outside seating.

My Mum moved into Winchcombe in April. She made the decision that she needed more support than she was able to get whilst living at home.
What we like about Winchcombe are the staff - whether it be the ladies at reception, the clinical leads, the carers on the ground floor and the activity staff -
they are all lovely and made Mum and us feel very welcome.
Mum enjoys the activities, the food and being able to get her hair done in the on-site salon!

Winchcombe I found a very friendly place to live with good, regular meals. Very good accommodation and I particularly liked a few walks each day in the lovely garden, especially designed obviously. Also, if anything went wrong the staff put it right. I was a lot better for my stay there.

My mother suffers from Parkinsons with Alzheimer's and has been slowly deteriorating over the past few years since moving into Winchcombe Place myself and my three brothers are very pleased with the service and extra care they have provided for the day to day needs for my mum.
The carers are fantastic,
and there are a few who go that extra bit to ensure my mum is always comfortable and safe. They are always friendly and extremely caring for my mum, and when I visit my mother they are very friendly and caring to me.
I am so glad my mum is here because I don't think there is a better care home anywhere, and we as a family know she will get the best always.
Thank you to all the staff who have in the past dealt with my mum and the same to those who are looking after her now and in the future too.
Keep it up all of you you are doing, in my opinion, a marvellous job.

Winchcombe Place has a very warm and inviting atmosphere. Every member of staff whom I came in contact with was extremely helpful and always friendly.

I offer my thanks and congratulations to the entire staff of Winchcombe Place who made the selection of the care-home a straightforward and pleasurable experience. The staff were empathetic to the concerns of my wife's aunt, who was seeking respite care; they explained the process and facilities superbly.
The admission process yesterday could not have been bettered, from the smiling face at Reception and through to all the other highly pleasant and professional staff involved. The welcoming lunch was first class. The paperwork formalities were completed with minimum fuss.
By the time I departed the new resident was relaxed, smiling and very much 'at home'. That evening, sounding very bright and 'chirpy' she phoned us to describe her excellent evening meal. Not only was she in better spirits than we had experienced for some months but we slept well too, knowing that she was in good hands. Our thanks to all concerned in this outstanding care home.

The care home has proved to be a safe and secure environment for my mother, who has Parkinson's and is suffering early stages of Dementia. Because the food options are of exceptional quality, my mother is easily encouraged to eat regularly, which she was finding increasingly difficult in her own home.
The general environment is clean and homely, with a plethora of activities to keep her occupied should she wish to socialize with other residents.

This is a wonderful caring place. All staff members treat residents with the utmost respect. The idea that this is the residents home is implemented by all the staff and applied equally to relatives, so we always feel welcome to visit and to contribute to care and comment.

Very nice home from home. Light and bright. General dementia and nursing care on 3 floors. Caring staff who work very hard. Excellent activities although not all residents can partake as some are rather poorly. I am happy for my mother in law to live here and wish I had known about the home for my own

Our 91-year-old mother has only been at Winchcombe Place for just over a week following discharge from hospital having broken her hip.
She seems contented and has settled in very quickly, which we think is due to the warm homely surroundings and the tact and compassion of the staff. Our mother being
happy means we are happy! Well done Winchcombe Place.

My mother has recently moved into Winchcombe Place and has settled well largely due to amazing staff. They have made her feel welcome and are very respectful of her needs. They all respond quickly to both mine and my mother's requests and her changing needs. I was delighted to see my mother participating

My mum has been at Winchcombe place for about 4 months - for the first few weeks, I was very impressed with the care she received. Unfortunately, she becomes psychotic and was moved to the second floor. Since then the care has been disappointing - the move was not conducted well - they lost personal
items of hers, the room light doesn't work and the armchair was stained. The handover was poor about her preferences in terms of what she likes to eat and drink, the feedback to the mental health team was inaccurate and the staff seem irritated by her. The management team are new and seem good and focussed so am hoping to see some improvements.

However, we are sorry to hear about your recent disappointments. The move was in her best interests, offering a more conducive environment to her present care needs. Since your initial concerns, we have developed a multi-step action plan with you to help us support your mum and allay your fears, working alongside our senior specialist nurse practitioner and the appropriate external teams. I do hope that by now you have already noted improvements. Our staff have had received specialist training on psychosis to give them a better understanding of this condition. The chef now has a dietary notification of your mum's preferences which has been cascaded to all staff. The bedroom light has been fixed, the chair has been deep cleaned and her calendar has been reinstated. We have also tried very hard to replicate the bedroom to match the layout of the residential suite to reduce confusion.

When our Mother first came to Winchcombe Place, she was very unsettled and unresponsive to family and visitors. Our Mother has recently moved from the 2nd floor to the ground floor as her health has improved. The difference in our mothers response to the family and friends visiting her has changed,
she is engaged in our conversation and playing scrabble again things I thought were lost for ever, not everything is wonderful, the admin and communication could be improved, but the care our Mother receives is very good and she has benefited enormously.

I cannot express enough how well organised, friendly and well equipped this home is.
Everything is explained in detail and all staff are happy to assist whatever the problem. Moving in was well organised and quick. The cleanliness is fantastic, housekeeping team couldn't do any better. From the time
I walk in to visit my sister to when I leave, I feel so relaxed because everyone and the atmosphere is just perfect.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2024

I have 30 years of experience working in care homes, and I was keen to join Care UK because of Winchcombe Place’s great reputation within the local community.


Before this, I was working as a Home Manager of a nursing home for residents living with dementia who required nursing care.


As Home Manager of Winchcombe Place, it’s important that I’m empathetic, a good listener and have good leadership skills. I ensure I’m always open and transparent and show my own learning when needed.


My favourite part of the day is walking around the home and talking to residents, relatives and colleagues. By spending time with residents, I find out what else we can be doing to enhance their lives.


I’m proud of my achievements, including a career highlight of turning a home from ‘Requires Improvement’ to ‘Good’ within six months. But I also feel fulfilled when I see my team enhancing the lives of residents or progressing in their careers. Seeing the residents smile and having a great quality of life also makes everything we do worth it.


The most important part of my role is ensuring the safety of the residents and all those who visit Winchcombe Place. As both a manager and someone who has had a loved one live in a care home, I have valuable experience seeing care homes from both sides.


When I’m not at work, I enjoy family walks with my beautiful cockapoo Lottie, cooking and travelling.
