My sister and I have visited our dad on Ocean floor 3 times from Canada. Each time we are absolutely amazed with the care and love that each staff member shows to all residents here.
They go out of their way to serve both residents and guests with utmost in concern and care. So accommodating, kind
and we are so grateful for this "above and beyond" care given to our father. Thank you!

My mum arrived at Scarlet House in early February from hospital, since she arrived the whole experience for her has been just what she needed. The care from nurses, carers, management has been excellent, nothing is too much trouble and everyone seems happy and caring. Thank you Scarlet House.

We chose Scarlet House for my father who had Alzheimer's, the home is modern and has a lovely coffee shop and some lovely staff although we felt that care and activities were definitely focused on the mentally more able residents downstairs. Staff moved between the normal residential care and upstairs
into the Dementia 'wing' and this meant that care was not consistent in its approach. Unfortunately, the home decided they could not cope with my father's behaviour and asked us to remove him (very stressful with no prior warning). Thankfully this worked out perfectly, moving to a different charity run local specialist dementia only home where his problem behaviours vanished overnight.
Reply from Amy Wilson, AD at Scarlet HouseThank you for taking time to provide feedback on Scarlet House. We are delighted to read your positive comments about the staff and safety, and the food and facilities we offer. There are occasions where staff have to work across different suites in order to provide the best care and support for residents. This is to ensure we maintain our high staff to resident ratio, which is in line with Care UK’s standards and is one of the highest in the sector. We have a full time lifestyle colleague in the dementia suite who provides residents with the stimulation and activity which is right for them. We are sorry to hear about your experience with your father. Regrettably there are occasions when we are not the right care service for a resident. We are pleased your father is now settled. It has been unfortunate the home has not had a permanent home manager for some time but we have a new manager starting in October, as well as a new deputy manager. The new management team will be instrumental in cementing the great care our residents receive every day.

We decided to move my Aunt to Scarlett House in the spring of 2018 after a brief spell in hospital and because she was very unhappy about returning to her previous care home.
The staff at Scarlett House handled the whole process extremely effectively and as a family we felt the standard of care was
excellent and a significant improvement on her previous facility.

My Aunt sadly died at the end of June but we cannot fault the care she received during her brief stay and would not hesitate in recommending Scarlett House to others.

I am generally very happy with the care given to my uncle.
Some issues I have previously raised do not appear to have been dealt with (ie arranging support tights for very swollen legs).
While his personal care is well maintained, I would really appreciate more time being spent with him to encourage
him to interact and hopefully get involved in some activities
I think there should be more TV channels available for residents.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Marketing Support Administrator at Scarlet HouseThank you very much for your positive feedback about your uncle’s care at Scarlet House. All our residents are encouraged to take part in activities. Our new manager, who is very passionate about activities, is currently planning a new programme and residents are being asked what new activities they would like. Your uncle will continue to be invited to join in but we have to respect his wishes if he doesn’t want to be involved. In the home, we do have Freeview TV which offers 70+ channels. We are sorry to hear about your concerns about his support tights. The manager will address this with you directly due to patient confidentiality.

The home is light, airy and spacious with what one may describe as "wedding venue" style! Lovely wall spaces for display but, alas, no art!
Equipment, where provided, of a high standard but apart from dining chairs, chairs have been chosen for looks rather than utility. e.g. Most are far too low to
allow people to get up from, no riser/recliner chairs that I have seen.
One hairdryer for 92 occupants- kept in hair salon. Activities are backward looking and do not provide stimulation on the whole. e.g. Too much showing of 50 and 60-year-old films etc and patronising singsongs. Major film showed on TV in unsuitable room while the purpose-built cinema was used for a meeting.
Wonderful atmosphere which is non-restrictive, free and easy and the young staff are a delight. Food- adequate but some cheap food e.g wet, cold, no excuse.
Please note I have given a full verbal report to the manager.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Marketing Support Administrator at Scarlet HouseThank you very much for your positive comments about Scarlet House. We are delighted you think the home has a wonderful atmosphere and that the young staff are a delight.

We are sorry that you feel the activities are unsuitable. At Scarlet House, we are committed to offering a range of fun and interesting daily activities, based on residents interests and hobbies. If there is a hobby or interest you would particularly enjoy or a particular genre of film you would like to watch then please do let our lifestyle team know.
With regards to your comments about the food offered, all our meals are freshly prepared and cooked by our own chef using quality ingredients. If you have a particular favourite dish that you like cooked in a particular way then our chef will only be too happy to prepare this for you. With regards to the provision of hairdryers, this is certainly something we will review.

All very good except for the food - poor quality ingredients, badly cooked and presented. Meals served often different to the printed menu. Activities often cancelled without warning and not geared to residents interests. Also poorly advertised. Visitors made very welcome and an open atmosphere.

Our menus are prepared in advance and there are times when plans have to change, due to ingredient availability. Checks are now in place to ensure the displayed menus are correct. With regard to the activities, there are occasions when they have to be cancelled due to staff sickness. However, we do try to minimise this as much as possible so that we don’t disappoint. Friendly staff, a good program of activities and food which mum likes. My only gripes are that her hearing aid isn't always working when I visit (so it isn't being checked) and once she got taken on a trip on a day she should have been at a medical appointment.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Marketing Support Administrator at Scarlet HouseThank you very much for your feedback regarding your mother’s care at Scarlet House and your positive comments about our care team, activities and food. We are also pleased that you feel residents are treated with dignity and that safety and security are good.
We are sorry to hear your concerns about your mums hearing aid. Your mum was self-caring with her aids since she moved in but has been struggling to put them in and didn’t ask our staff for help. Now, following our conversation, we have an agreed plan that your mum’s carer will be responsible for ensuring her hearing aids are in.
With regards to the missed appointment, your mum decided that she wanted to go on the outing rather than go for her appointment. As your mum has capacity we have to respect her decisions.
Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback and of course please do contact the home manager or any other members of the senior team at the home if there is anything else we can help with now or in the future.

Overall very pleased with everything apart from meals.
If restaurants can provide hot flavoursome meals I can't understand why Mum's is so bland and served on cold plates - prefers tinned soup rather than cooked on premises.
Staff are very good and friendly.
But I do think she is in the best place
even if she doesn't.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Marketing Support Administrator at Scarlet HouseThank you for your positive comments for the care and support we provide and we are grateful for your constructive feedback. We are sorry to hear that the food offering has not met your expectations. The equipment we serve the meals from should ensure both the plates and the meal itself are of an adequate temperature. We will, of course, review this with the team and make improvements where possible. We take great care in our menu planning to offer a variety of choice for residents, however, the home manager Pyela would be more than happy to discuss your mother's preference with you, so that we can create a meal plan that will suit her individual requirements.

The atmosphere in the care home is generally very cheerful. Reception are extremely pleasant and make you feel welcome. The home made cakes and biscuits along with the accessible drinks really make a difference when you visit and it is really nice to be able to share a drink with your relative. The
cleanliness is generally good and the home always smells clean, however, the cleaning staff often appear rushed and the little things don't get done.

The care staff are always very professional, treat the residents with respect and dignity, often in challenging situations. The only failing here is when things get promised and then don't happen, like nail cutting and baths. The activity staff could be more proactive in rounding up residents.

Reply from Samantha Debenham, Marketing Support Administrator at Scarlet HouseWe are delighted with the positive comments and scores for the care and support we provide and we are grateful for your constructive feedback. We are sorry to hear that you have experienced some issues, however, I understand that the home manager Pyela, has now met with you to discuss this in more detail and you have agreed a plan to ensure your relatives nails are checked at least three times a week and this will be documented for your review. Our housekeeping team do their very best to ensure all bedrooms are cleaned regularly, however, on occasion the residents are reluctant. Going forward the cleaners will more flexible with their schedules and will try to accommodate the cleaning of your father-in-law’s bedroom when it is vacant, which he is happy with. We hope this has addressed any concerns you had but please do contact the home manager if you have any further feedback at any time.

Great home, can't complain but, sometimes staff are a bit too rough but that's because I have a frozen shoulder to try to look after and it's very painful.
I had an X-ray last year showing inflammation around the shoulder joints. I feel I may be ringing my bell too much because of staff shortages.
The girls have more important things and people to look after apart from me.
Personality, in my opinion, is very important in this situation.

My mother-in-law moved here in February 2017. She came straight from hospital at very short notice to the home. She has settled in well thanks to the staff and stimulating environment. The facilities are extremely good and we noticed that she was called by her name immediately, the staff seeming to
know her instantly.
A very good sign that this was a very caring environment.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.683)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.683) out of 10 for Scarlet House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 52 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 51 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.683 for Scarlet House is calculated as follows: ( (451 Excellents x 5) + (133 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 606 Ratings = 4.683
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Scarlet House is based on 51 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 86 registered maximum number of service users is 17.2, which has been reached with 51 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

Becoming Home Manager at Scarlet House has been the highlight of my career so far. Before this, I was working as a Team Leader. I really wanted an opportunity to progress in my career, and that’s something Care UK has offered.

As Home Manager, it’s important to be caring, compassionate and have a good eye for detail. You also need to have good interpersonal skills and be diligent, hardworking and committed to the home.

I love seeing the residents enjoying activities in the home – it's my favourite part of my working day. I’m proud to work with a fantastic team that makes a difference in residents’ day-to-day lives.

Outside of work, I enjoy family life, and my other interests include music and cars.
