I have always found the staff responsive and caring. The facilities are excellent and we always find the atmosphere good. The design of the building allows my mother to wander at will in a safe environment without becoming lost and distressed.

The home is light, airy and spacious with what one may describe as "wedding venue" style! Lovely wall spaces for display but, alas, no art!
Equipment, where provided, of a high standard but apart from dining chairs, chairs have been chosen for looks rather than utility. e.g. Most are far too low to allow people to get up from, no riser/recliner chairs that I have seen.
One hairdryer for 92 occupants- kept in hair salon. Activities are backward looking and do not provide stimulation on the whole. e.g. Too much showing of 50 and 60-year-old films etc and patronising singsongs. Major film showed on TV in unsuitable room while the purpose-built cinema was used for a meeting.
Wonderful atmosphere which is non-restrictive, free and easy and the young staff are a delight. Food- adequate but some cheap food e.g wet, cold, no excuse.

Please note I have given a full verbal report to the manager.

All very good except for the food - poor quality ingredients, badly cooked and presented. Meals served often different to the printed menu. Activities often cancelled without warning and not geared to residents interests. Also poorly advertised. Visitors made very welcome and an open atmosphere.

Friendly staff, a good program of activities and food which mum likes. My only gripes are that her hearing aid isn't always working when I visit (so it isn't being checked) and once she got taken on a trip on a day she should have been at a medical appointment.

Overall very pleased with everything apart from meals.
If restaurants can provide hot flavoursome meals I can't understand why Mum's is so bland and served on cold plates - prefers tinned soup rather than cooked on premises.
Staff are very good and friendly.

But I do think she is in the best place even if she doesn't.

Review from Jane B (Relative of Resident) published on 28 April 2017 Submitted via Postal Card

The atmosphere in the care home is generally very cheerful. Reception are extremely pleasant and make you feel welcome. The home made cakes and biscuits along with the accessible drinks really make a difference when you visit and it is really nice to be able to share a drink with your relative. The cleanliness is generally good and the home always smells clean, however, the cleaning staff often appear rushed and the little things don't get done.

The care staff are always very professional, treat the residents with respect and dignity, often in challenging situations. The only failing here is when things get promised and then don't happen, like nail cutting and baths. The activity staff could be more proactive in rounding up residents.

Great home, can't complain but, sometimes staff are a bit too rough but that's because I have a frozen shoulder to try to look after and it's very painful.
I had an X-ray last year showing inflammation around the shoulder joints. I feel I may be ringing my bell too much because of staff shortages. The girls have more important things and people to look after apart from me.

Personality, in my opinion, is very important in this situation.

My mother-in-law moved here in February 2017. She came straight from hospital at very short notice to the home. She has settled in well thanks to the staff and stimulating environment. The facilities are extremely good and we noticed that she was called by her name immediately, the staff seeming to know her instantly.

A very good sign that this was a very caring environment.

My mother came in two years ago and was treated very well indeed, like part of a big family. Unfortunately, she died within the year, due to ill health. Now my Mother-in-law is a resident here and is also very well looked after, although she needs nursing care as well.

Whenever we arrive, we are always treated warmly and feel very welcomed by all the staff.

Mum was made very welcome in her initial few weeks and she has continued to feel content to be a full resident subsequently. Her health and visiting family are given good attention too, so yes we are happy that mum is being cared for by happy and attentive staff.

My wife and I have been very impressed with all aspects of the care and services provided at Scarlet House. My mother, who is 90 years of age, settled into her new home very quickly and soon felt at home there. She feels very happy and secure there and this is a great comfort to us. We visit every day and always receive a warm and friendly welcome from the managers and staff that we meet irrespective of their roles at Scarlet House and this makes for an uplifting experience.

We have been so impressed with all the staff and facilities at Scarlet House. The care they have given to settle my mother in her new home has been exceptional. The staff have been able to identify her needs and worries and deal with them accordingly. She is now so much calmer and happy in her new surroundings, which has been such a relief to all the family.

I have been delighted with the care received by my mother for her one month of respite care at Scarlet House. Initially I called in to see if I could look around and I was immediately welcomed by the home manager and given a detailed insight to life at the home. Mum stayed for a month and was treated with warmth, respect and dignity. During that time I saw her grow in confidence, settling into life with the support of the staff. No job was too difficult for the staff, they always had time for mum and me. I think mum was actually happier here than at home and I put that down to the high standard of thoughtful appropriate care for an 88 year old lady with memory problems.

During my mothers respite care, all staff were extremely helpful and caring, not only to my mother but us family members also. Unfortunately my mother became ill during her stay, the staff on duty called a doctor and informed us immediately. Two days later my mothers condition deteriorated and staff called doctor she then went to hospital. I cannot stress how highly I regard the staff and their devotion to duty.

My mum was transferred to Scarlet House from hospital for end of life care. All staff introduced themselves to mum then dad and myself. All staff asked mum her preferred name, what she would like to be called. All staff give mum personal care using privacy and dignity. All staff relate to other residents with respect. All staff are happy to assist mum with dietary needs even when they are very busy. They spend time feeding her at her pace, not rushing her.

I have visited my friend three times in this care home and would like to say how happy it makes me knowing my friend (aged 92) is well cared for. Every time I come I meet more members of staff - all so helpful and polite to my friend and myself.

Very thrilled to see (and hear) that all the staff are local! The décor is amazing, the place is wonderful, five star service.

Adrian BoldogJob Title:Home Manager

Becoming a Home Manager at Scarlet House has been the highlight of my career so far. Before this, I was working as a Team Leader. I really wanted an opportunity to progress in my career, and that’s something Care UK has offered.

As Home Manager, it’s important to be caring, compassionate and have a good eye for detail. You also need to have good interpersonal skills and be diligent, hardworking and committed to the home.

I love seeing the residents enjoying activities in the home – it's my favourite part of my working day. I’m proud to work with a fantastic team that makes a difference in residents’ day-to-day lives.

Outside of work, I enjoy family life, and my other interests include music and cars.
