The team at Upton Dene are passionate about enriching residents’ lives with inspiring activities. The home has its own trishaw for trips into the community, weekly visits from therapy dog Ned, and regular performances by the University of Chester’s choir of student nurses. The local community is invited to Memory Café afternoons (1.30pm–3.30pm), supporting people living with dementia and their loved ones.

Residents enjoy a giant interactive tablet for games, gardening club for home-grown produce, and outings in the minibus. The home is modern, light and airy, with beautifully decorated bedrooms featuring ensuite walk-in wet rooms; some have direct garden access. Residents enjoy home-cooked meals in dining rooms, with a private space for special occasions. There’s also a vintage tearoom for relaxing with family, who are welcome anytime.

Upton Dene offers a hair and beauty salon with weekly mobile hairdresser visits, and a cinema room for old classics with fizz and popcorn. The gardens feature a pavilion, sensory planting and a vegetable patch for keen gardeners.

Providing residential, dementia, nursing and palliative care, the team also offers respite breaks, bookable in advance.

Proud to be veteran-friendly

The team is proud to achieve Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) status, supporting the practical, emotional and social needs of the armed forces community in care homes. Mum has been at Upton Dene since June 2024 and is well and truly settled. The staff are so kind, caring and considerate and go out of their way to ensure the residents are well taken care of. Actually it's like one big happy family. The communication between management, carers and family is excellent.

A really good care home for my Mum whom has vascular dementia; & sadly my 84 year old Dad can no longer care for her. She is free to roam about as she likes - great rooms all with fully equipped disabled access wet rooms; she is warm, well fed and can go out in the lovely gardens when the weather is
good. Thoroughly recommended & the staff are very caring.*****

Mum has resided at Upton Dene for almost four and a half years since loosing my dad. Mum unfortunately has Alzheimer's so was unable to remain at home. I cannot speak highly enough of the care mum receives from ALL the staff members. Mum has really settled into the homes routine, enjoying the weekly
bingo especially! Thanks for looking after mum so well, it's reassuring to know mum is being cared for so well.

My mother is in longer term residential care and has settled in well as part of the community. The staff are caring, friendly and helpful. She is happy, has retained her independence and there are plenty of activities on offer. The facilities are modern and purpose-built. Would definitely recommend.

Upton Dene were able to accept my mother on a rapid palliative discharge from the hospital at very short notice. We were so grateful that my mother's last few days were peaceful and that she was treated with dignity and respect. All the staff made the time we spent there as good as it could be and we
will always be immensely glad she could end her 101 year life in a truly caring place.

I chose Upton Dene for my dad because staff took time to show me round & answer my questions when I was looking at local homes - this was not my experience at so many. I immediately liked the feel with it's excellent clean & modern facilities, calm atmosphere & the warm vibe from the staff. My first
impressions proved to be well founded & there is no question in my mind that I made the right choice.
The staff at Upton Dene are absolutely amazing. My dad wasn't at the home long but I still felt they got to know him well & always ensured he was comfortable & happy. The carers played board games with him, chatted to him and reassured him. They included him in so many of the activities on offer every day. Dad loved the beautiful garden & the peaceful environment. He used to think he was in a five star hotel!
I found it hard coping with my dad's failing health but the staff that were sensitive and caring towards me too and they gave my dear dad the care that he needed & deserved right to the end.
Reply from Jacob Hardie, Design and Marketing Assistant at Upton Dene Residential and Nursing HomeThank you for your thoughtful and generous feedback. We are honoured that you entrusted Upton Dene with your father's care and are pleased to know that both he and your family felt supported during his time with us. mum and dad were transferred from hospital as they were unable to care for themselves at home any longer due to mums cancer and dads dementia. Mum only lived for a few weeks and her brain cancer made her unreasonable at times but this didn't stop the staff from being very caring and attentive.
Dad
lived on in the home for 6months following mums passing. During this time there was new management and an improvement throughout including new flooring, fixed heating as it was at times a little chilly. The activities improved and dad loved the exercise ,the trips out and the movies
Dad was very well cared for, he needed assistance with eating and all aspects of his daily living and these were attended to with dignity.
Near the end of his life I was able to video call him which I am extremely grateful to the staff for organising as it was very hard as I live in Australia. The food was good but a little more variety would have been nice especially in the evening. Thankyou for everything you do
Reply from Fae Doherty, Senior Marketing Officer at Upton Dene Residential and Nursing HomeThank you for sharing your heartfelt experience. It sounds like your parents received compassionate and attentive care during their time at the home. It's wonderful to hear about the improvements made under the new management, and that your dad enjoyed the activities and outings. We appreciate your feedback about the food variety and will certainly take it into consideration. Thank you for your kind words and support.

I cannot praise the staff at Upton Dene highly enough for their attentive, thorough care and for the kindness and compassion that they showed my mum during a very difficult time, following the death of my father. In fact, we as relatives were supported emotionally by both the nursing and admin staff
who also helped us greatly in organising a small funeral service for our father at the home, enabling our mum to be present. Thank you

We are satisfied that Mum was cared for satisfactory, however an inconsistency in staffs skill set and communication was evident. Mum was treated with dignity at all times. We feel the rooms required some attention in terms of cleanliness, redecorating and upgrades.
Improvements were made two fold
when the activity's team member joined.
Some of the more established staff were first class.
Two members of staff were amazing during the night of mums passing.
Reply from Kate Yates, Communications and Content Specialist at Upton Dene Residential and Nursing HomeThank you for your feedback and your high praise for stand-out members of our team. We're glad your mum was cared for with such dignity and that certain staff made such a positive impact, especially at such a difficult time. Our team comes from diverse backgrounds, and we pride ourselves on providing consistently high levels of training, to continually improve both skills and communication, so we apologise if this was not reflected in your experience. Room upgrades and maintenance are part of a rolling programme of ongoing improvements our housekeeping team clean residents' bedrooms on a daily basis. It's great to hear the addition of a third activities team member has made such a difference.Regarding the facilities, we take pride in our salon, caf, cinema room, spacious garden and other features, and we regret that this wasn't fully reflected.Thank you again for your insights - they help us improve while also recognising our dedicated team.

Mum has been a resident in Upton Dene since January this year.
She is like a new woman!
She's gone up 2 dress sizes (and is costing me a bloody fortune), could I be happier? Absolutely not!!
From the minute you walk in, you are greeted by two members of staff, who always have a smile.
The two
managers on Mum's floor (the dementia floor), are absolutely amazing, as are all the fabulous carers, far too many to name, but I do have my faves!
Obviously, one particular staff member has always been my 'go to' as she was the first person we met, when we turned up, unannounced, to view the facilities.
There are daily activities, trips out, entertainment weekly, some of which I've been lucky enough to enjoy with Mum.
My only question is, is there room for me?
Reply from Kate Yates, Communications and Content Specialist at Upton Dene Residential and Nursing HomeThank you for your fabulous review for Upton Dene, the team will be so proud to read your comments. It's wonderful to hear how much your mum has thrived since joining the home - it's heartwarming to know she's so happy and well cared for. It's lovely to hear how you feel welcomed by our team and appreciate the efforts of the staff. It's lovely that you've been able to join in with some of the activities and entertainment with your mum - it really speaks to the family atmosphere we strive to create. We'll pass your kind words along to the team, thank you for sharing such positive feedback.

We were very pleased to be directed towards Upton Dene as a home for my stepmother.
As she had not visited it previously, the aesthetics of the home were important to us and we knew they would be to her, initially, as well.
It feels like a hotel on arrival and has a large and welcoming plush area
which adds to the appeal.
She has settled well and we are happy with the care she is receiving there. She has a lovely good-sized room, which she is happy with.
We believe they try very hard at Upton Dene to bring activities which stimulate and entertain the residents on a weekly basis, there are plenty of varying things on offer to suit different interests.
Sometimes the communication could be improved, but the receptionists send emails to the right department for us and will often respond to questions and queries we may have.
We don't live locally and so it does make it more difficult for us as we cannot visit her personally, but we do feel content that she is receiving the attention she needs.

We have regular resident and relative meetings, but please don't hesitate to reach out if there's ever anything more the team can do to support you. By far the best care home after checking out many for Mum. Dad was also accepted so he could have a decent place to pass and spend his final days. The home is very organised and easy to get updated info on Mum. Staff have been fantastic during Dad's final days and helping Mum settle into a new environment
after she had been through a very emotional and traumatic experience. Thank you to you all.

Mum has been a resident for over 12 months during which time I have been very happy with her care and the facilities at Upton Dene which far exceed what I have seen elsewhere. All the staff are friendly, attentive and caring. There is a good routine with plenty of flexibility for individual needs. Activities
are varied and of a good standard with plenty of external agencies and individuals for extra interest and stimulation. The gardens are kept beautifully. Meals on the whole are very good and with a little more variety would be excellent.
Thank you for all you do!

Thank you to all the wonderful people who work at Upton Dene Care Home. My friend received the best care possible, he was treated with care, compassion and dignity. During his stay, he also enjoyed the fun and laughter along the way in his words. 'They're not staff, they're my friends'.High praise indeed.

Upton Dene - you've been amazing. Mum initially came to Upton Dene for respite in December 2023. It soon became clear that going home was not going to be an option, and Mum had to move in permanently. It took her a bit to settle in, not being in her own home with her own belongings. However, you allowed
her to bring as many of her things as she needed and you were very accommodating, which helped a great deal. Finding somewhere safe, with staff that clearly care is not an easy task. Mum was only with you for just over 6 months, you made her feel happy and cared for. You made her laugh, you encouraged her to join in activities and nothing was too much trouble. I know she thought a lot of the care provided and she thought highly of some of the wonderful carers and nurses. We have been extremely happy and lucky to have found you. The attention and care you gave/showed Mum in the time she was with you was effortless you treated her with dignity and respect and we couldn't have asked for more. Thank you.

The activities leader, with her warm personality, has been very helpful in being a liaison point-of-contact for my parents and me, from the initial viewing to taking up places for them both. This customer-facing role is really vital in what is such an emotional and logistically complex move for both
the prospective/new residents and their families. Having the activities leader welcome us in, check that all is going well, help with the room/name tags and generally being a bridge between us and the care and the maintenance staff was just what we needed. Additionally, the maintenance men were also great - providing a fast service in getting pictures put up and a Hi-Fi cabled up properly - supplying some loudspeaker cables that I did not have and was expecting to have to purchase later on. N.B. My rating is based only on these first 2 months and a 'face-value' look on 2 separate visits so far, so can't yet properly rate all the listed aspects (hence using the median ratings in lieu of leaving blank.)

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
