The team at Upton Dene are passionate about enriching residents’ lives with inspiring activities. The home has its own trishaw for trips into the community, weekly visits from therapy dog Ned, and regular performances by the University of Chester’s choir of student nurses. The local community is invited to Memory Café afternoons (1.30pm–3.30pm), supporting people living with dementia and their loved ones.

Residents enjoy a giant interactive tablet for games, gardening club for home-grown produce, and outings in the minibus. The home is modern, light and airy, with beautifully decorated bedrooms featuring ensuite walk-in wet rooms; some have direct garden access. Residents enjoy home-cooked meals in dining rooms, with a private space for special occasions. There’s also a vintage tearoom for relaxing with family, who are welcome anytime.

Upton Dene offers a hair and beauty salon with weekly mobile hairdresser visits, and a cinema room for old classics with fizz and popcorn. The gardens feature a pavilion, sensory planting and a vegetable patch for keen gardeners.

Providing residential, dementia, nursing and palliative care, the team also offers respite breaks, bookable in advance.

Proud to be veteran-friendly

The team is proud to achieve Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) status, supporting the practical, emotional and social needs of the armed forces community in care homes. The VFF is a collaboration between Armed Forces charities Royal Star & Garter, Royal British Legion and NHS Veterans’ Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA).

Mum has been a resident for over 12 months during which time I have been very happy with her care and the facilities at Upton Dene which far exceed what I have seen elsewhere. All the staff are friendly, attentive and caring. There is a good routine with plenty of flexibility for individual needs. Activities
are varied and of a good standard with plenty of external agencies and individuals for extra interest and stimulation. The gardens are kept beautifully. Meals on the whole are very good and with a little more variety would be excellent.
Thank you for all you do!
Reply from Kate Yates, Communications and Content Specialist at Upton Dene Residential and Nursing HomeThank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your positive experience with us, the team at Upton Dene will be delighted to read your comments. We're thrilled to hear that you are so happy with the care, the home's environment and the engaging activities and experiences your mum enjoys. We appreciate your feedback on the meals and would like to reassure you that there are always alternative food choices available if residents don't fancy something that's on the menu. We have recently updated the style of our menus to make these alternatives much clearer, to help our residents to make their choices. Thank you again for your review, we will be sure to share it with the team.

Thank you to all the wonderful people who work at Upton Dene Care Home. My friend received the best care possible, he was treated with care, compassion and dignity. During his stay, he also enjoyed the fun and laughter along the way in his words. 'They're not staff, they're my friends'.High praise indeed.
From the moment you walk through the doors everyone in every position they hold is excellent in all that they do. Once again thank you.

Upton Dene - you've been amazing. Mum initially came to Upton Dene for respite in December 2023. It soon became clear that going home was not going to be an option, and Mum had to move in permanently. It took her a bit to settle in, not being in her own home with her own belongings. However, you allowed
her to bring as many of her things as she needed and you were very accommodating, which helped a great deal. Finding somewhere safe, with staff that clearly care is not an easy task. Mum was only with you for just over 6 months, you made her feel happy and cared for. You made her laugh, you encouraged her to join in activities and nothing was too much trouble. I know she thought a lot of the care provided and she thought highly of some of the wonderful carers and nurses. We have been extremely happy and lucky to have found you. The attention and care you gave/showed Mum in the time she was with you was effortless you treated her with dignity and respect and we couldn't have asked for more. Thank you.

The activities leader, with her warm personality, has been very helpful in being a liaison point-of-contact for my parents and me, from the initial viewing to taking up places for them both. This customer-facing role is really vital in what is such an emotional and logistically complex move for both
the prospective/new residents and their families. Having the activities leader welcome us in, check that all is going well, help with the room/name tags and generally being a bridge between us and the care and the maintenance staff was just what we needed. Additionally, the maintenance men were also great - providing a fast service in getting pictures put up and a Hi-Fi cabled up properly - supplying some loudspeaker cables that I did not have and was expecting to have to purchase later on. N.B. My rating is based only on these first 2 months and a 'face-value' look on 2 separate visits so far, so can't yet properly rate all the listed aspects (hence using the median ratings in lieu of leaving blank.)

On searching for respite care, Upton Dene was very helpful and made this transition very easy.
Dad enjoyed his four weeks of respite care at Upton Dene. Originally staying for two weeks but wanted to stay another two weeks, which was easily accommodated by the home.

My wife stayed with your Upton Dene Care Home for one week respite care from the 5th of February to the 11th of February. She received excellent care and we were very happy with her stay (and have indeed booked her in for a further week's respite from the 1st of April 2024).

I found the home to be very good. The staff being very patient despite being under pressure. Answering the 'call bell' can be slow due to demand.
Extra staff would make a difference if it can be afforded.
Reply from Kate Yates, Communications and Content Specialist at Upton Dene Residential and Nursing HomeThank you for taking the time to leave a review and for your kind words about our fabulous team at Upton Dene. Please rest assured we are fully staffed throughout the home and while we always try to answer call bells promptly, there may occasionally be a slight delay, but of course, we try to keep this to a minimum.

A very unpleasant experience on the nursing floor staff. Not happy or helpful, no communication with family, no menu choice was offered to my dad and often left without a call bell to ring for help. I discharged my dad after 3 months.

I have been in residential care at Upton Dene Residential and Nursing Home since April 2017, almost seven years. In a few days time, I will celebrate my 87th birthday. The care has kept me in good health, in body and in mind. I am content and happy with my lot. I do not want to be anywhere else. Always
clean linen and an excellent express laundry service. The staff are a wonderful team and tolerate my always being late for breakfast. Some I regard as my adopted granddaughters. Food is varied, well-prepared and well-presented. I understand if prawn cocktail and avocado pear are beyond the chef's budget!
Overall, more of the same for the next seven years, please.

As a family, we were very pleased with the care provided to my dad during the final period of his life.
All of the staff were always attentive, caring and supportive to both Dad and the family, at a difficult time. Great dignity and respect were shown.
We loved Dad's room. The care home was always
bright which made for a happy place.
Thanks once again.

There is never anyone on the front desk. I've had several experiences of having to wait outside for ten minutes or more before being let in and I have also been locked in with no one on the desk to let me out. The staff seem to spend their time smoking by the side entrance and often smell of cigarettes.

Since the new manageress, the home has massively improved on all counts. I have experienced proper care for three relatives with different needs, all of whom have been content and happy here. The family can relax trusting in the consistently high standards and knowing that staff are highly trained,
dedicated and experienced and that communications are prompt, knowledgeable and helpful. We are all happy as a family.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.813)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.813) out of 10 for Upton Dene Residential and Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 23 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.813 for Upton Dene Residential and Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (231 Excellents x 5) + (35 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 273 Ratings = 4.813
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Upton Dene Residential and Nursing Home is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
