Ferndown Manor has fully come up to expectations after my first viewing at the open day a year ago. The staff are working tirelessly even though they are now short-staffed which I am assured is being addressed. Well done to everybody.

My nan has settled extremely well and has a better quality of life. All the staff are lovely and always around to help. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming which makes it a lot nicer for me and my nan. I couldn't imagine anywhere better. My mum spent months and months trying to find a place
like this.

Weakness in care staff.
To create continuity it would help for the manager to visit from time to time.
Reply from Samantha Debenham, Marketing Support Administrator at Ferndown ManorThank you for taking the time to review Ferndown Manor, and in particular for your excellent scores which we’re delighted to see. In regards to your comments around continuity and the care team, I understand that a senior member of staff has been in contact and I hope we have been able to allay your concerns. I would like to assure you that the home manager, as well as the deputy manager, spend time on each suite in the home regularly, including with your loved one. As a new home we have also recently opened up a new suite in the home, and some of the team have moved across to the new area – this is to ensure that our experienced staff are available and supporting our new team members whilst they settle in – this also means that all residents have some familiar faces alongside our new recruits, whom we are sure residents will get to know quickly. I would also like to assure you that the home manager also operates an open door policy, so you are welcome to speak with her or another member of the management team if you have any questions, concerns or feedback at any time.

The care and attention given to my mother during her two-week respite care was excellent. She had very poor mobility issues upon admission and by the end of the two week period, she was walking unaided. She was happy at the home and made many friends there.
The staff were attentive to all her needs
in a caring way respecting her wishes and dignity.
Thank you, Ferndown Manor, for improving my mother's health and well being.

Very friendly, helpful and attentive staff. Facilities are excellent. The building appears well designed with wide corridors and plenty of open spaces. We had lunch and the food was very good. It is a nice clean home as it should be with only seven residents, hopefully this standard can be maintained
when the home is full.

My Aunt is currently on respite care. We cannot fault the standard of information and communication which is especially helpful as we live a distance away.
The care she is receiving is excellent. Staff show care, compassion, understanding and humour.
The activities are varied and geared towards
the interests of residents. Visitors are warmly welcomed.

We have been absolutely delighted with the care for mum on her 2-week respite stay. All the staff have been so friendly and welcoming.
Mum has felt safe and well cared for. The food has been of a very high standard and this has motivated mum to eat (normally has a poor appetite). Her room was the standard
of a 5* hotel, immaculately clean and all new furnishings, as indeed are the premises as a whole. Mum had the opportunity to go on trips and take part in activities. She was encouraged and came out of her room and engaged with the team and other residents. Having experienced other care homes, I cannot recommend Ferndown Manor enough. This absolutely offers the best care in the Bournemouth area.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.758)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.758) out of 10 for Ferndown Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 39 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 39 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.758 for Ferndown Manor is calculated as follows: ( (358 Excellents x 5) + (91 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 459 Ratings = 4.758
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ferndown Manor is based on 39 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 75 registered maximum number of service users is 15, which has been reached with 39 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I joined Ferndown Manor in 2021. Before I joined Care UK I worked as a Home Manager for several care homes, and before that, I worked as a District Nurse Manager for 20 years.

I decided to join Care UK as the company was highly recommended and its values reflect how care should be delivered and how I would want to be cared for.

In my role as Home Manager, I want to ensure the home remains a happy, safe place where residents thrive, and the team is proud to work. I want to ensure the highest standards of care are maintained. To succeed in this role, you need to be a good listener, be empathetic, have strong leadership skills, and be a good role model.

Walking around the home first thing in the morning is my favourite part of my job as it gives me an opportunity to greet every member of staff and residents. I also love to see the atmosphere when residents are enjoying positive participation in fulfilling activities.

My biggest professional challenge so far has been taking a home from an Inadequate CQC rating to Good.
