Overall Experience
Dad was a resident for over three years. The care provided was quite exceptional. Whilst his mobility was greatly reduced and the worry of falls was always present, the loving and attentive staff always made it possible for Dad to live life as fully as possible. He often praised the efforts that staff would go to in providing entertainment, organising trips and encouraging regular exercises. When we spoke he would relive his day with such joy and enthusiasm, whether it was the entertainment or trips outside, the staff would always try and come up with more to do. Whilst Covid presented many restrictions, in particular, home visits. I was so impressed with the efforts taken by staff and the management in keeping us fully updated on Dad's wellbeing.

As a family we were always given the warmest of greetings and felt very much included in Dad's life; it felt like we belonged to one big family, and I shall miss them all.

My mother has been a resident since January 2022 and as a family, we have been delighted with the level of care she has received. My father was allowed to visit on a daily basis, have meals with my mother and attend the various forms of activities and entertainment with her. The staff are extremely caring and attentive, going out of their way to get to know my mother and encourage her to participate in activities and to settle into the home. The rooms are large, modern and homely and the food is excellent, with a varied choice always available. When my father became ill, Royal Star & Garter - High Wycombe was an obvious choice for his end-of-life care and the staff treated him with the utmost kindness and dignity throughout, as well as providing constant support for the family. We would not hesitate to recommend Royal Star & Garter - High Wycombe to anyone looking for a home for their loved ones.

The Royal Star & Garter is in the top 20% of best care homes in southern England. My wife is in the best place I considered and I couldn't do better. It is a military charity and as such, I was admitted. It gives excellent dementia nursing and attention from caring nurses/carers. The leisure and eating facilities are very good. Excellent management. I make a visit three times a week, so feel competent to give an opinion. The costs seem very fair and not over-expensive from local studies made. I have personally had respite attention from their nursing side, and when needed I would apply for full-time residence.

My mother has now been at the Royal Star & Garter for four months and we are delighted with the care she receives. She has mid to late-stage Alzheimer's and severe mobility issues. We struggled to provide care for her at home for some time before making the decision with some trepidation that she must enter a home. After visiting several homes we decided on the
Royal Star & Garter and it really has lived up to our hopes and expectations.

Staff are unfailingly kind and patient with my mother and, as well as providing all the essential elements of care to a first-class standard, they go above and beyond in so many small ways to ensure that her experience is a positive one. One example: With her dementia, my mother becomes easily distressed, especially upon awakening from a nap when she is especially disorientated. So we will often find a member of staff sitting by her side as she snoozes, ready to reassure her that all is well and that she is safe and secure when she awakes. Excellent home. Excellent staff. Excellent care.

My father moved in at the beginning of June. The staff were very friendly and were always looking for ways to make him more comfortable. He didn't really get any physio though and didn't gain his ability to walk. The food was good and tailored to his needs. The room was smart and had all the facilities needed especially the hoist, which proved very useful. Unfortunately, he was only at the home until August, when he went into the hospital and didn't return to the care home. There are daily activities for the residents if they are fit and able to join in.

Reply from Diane Fisher, Marketing & Communications Officer at Royal Star & Garter - High Wycombe

It was a privilege to have known your father and to have been able to provide care for him. We're sorry he was only with us for such a short time, we would have really liked him to be able to have physio on a regular basis and enjoy more of our other activities too. We all really enjoyed getting to know you as a family and wish you the very best.

The staff are so caring, friendly and attentive. My mum is treated with gentleness, respect and a happy smile. She is always clean, smart and comfortable. She has activities and social events to stimulate her and always a choice to take part or not. I feel confident and content that she is relaxed and safe and that staff are well trained and genuinely eager to look after her and her needs. The home is very welcoming and has a definite family feel.

Overall Experience

My father-in-law moved to Star and Garter High Wycombe in July. I cannot thank them enough for giving him such a safe and comfortable environment.

He is still mentally active and receives lots of one-to-one support as well as varied activities. Sometimes he chooses not to do the activities, but that is ok as he never complains of boredom or anything else. He seems happier and much less anxious - better, I think, than with all the love and care we provided for him in his own home.

His move has been a godsend for his family. Its hard at first not having to think and worry for your loved ones, but no longer needing to organise carers, medical appointments, physios, chiropodists, eye and hearing clinics, dentists, assessments etc is a huge weight off our shoulders and makes a big improvement to family life. Cheaper too.

The nurses, dementia staff, carers and admins are lovely. All seem to enjoy the residents and working at Star and Garter, which confirms we made the right choice 100%.

Both my parents moved to the Royal Star & Garter early this year and during the last 6 months they have only ever experienced kindness and care from the whole team at High Wycombe.

The staff have gone above and beyond to ensure both my mum and dad have settled in to their respective families. With one being in nursing and the other in dementia, we have experienced both areas of care and I can honestly say neither disappoint. The facilities at High Wycombe are fantastic and nothing ever seems too much trouble. I would highly recommend the Royal Star & Garter to anyone seeking a care home for their loved ones.

My father has been a resident in one of the dementia families for about 6 months, and as I am local I manage to visit regularly. What is most striking is that he is always happy. Having had live-in support at home for several years he is thriving being part of a community and throws himself into the activities, particularly anything musical. There have been rare occasions when his condition means he becomes frustrated and agitated, but the staff are fantastic at making him feel comfortable again; they are able to do this because they have taken the time to get to know him so well. Being a new, purpose built facility, the environment is first class and provides everything that Dad needs.

My dad was a resident at the Royal Star & Garter for eighteen months in the dementia section. Care goes way beyond looking after the physical needs and the staff took the time and effort to connect with dad and become friends as well as carers. They excelled in this area and made dad's time as happy as possible, sharing jokes and spending time engaging with dad in activities. I am very grateful to the staff for the effort that they put in this area.
The facilities are also second to none. It is a new purpose build, the accommodation for residents is first class as are the facilities for visitors and resident entertainment purposes.

Our whole family can highly recommend this care home - it is just such a great combination of staff, facilities and care management. Simply Gold Standard and a benchmark for the care sector.

After years of being bed-bound and cared for at home, the hard decision was made for my husband to be moved into the Royal Star & Garter - High Wycombe for end-of-life care. With the outstanding nursing care and the amazing love and attention from all the staff, he was able to fulfil a very happy and comfortable year there. They went above and beyond and were even able to arrange for him to visit the garden and attend activities with the other residents. As a family, we cannot recommend the Star and Garter highly enough and we will always be grateful for the wonderful year that he had there.

When our mother’s dementia meant that she was in need of full-time care, we were delighted and relieved that she was able to move to the Royal Star and Garter, High Wycombe. The care and love she received was consistently outstanding and overwhelming. Her room felt like a great hotel, was well equipped but nevertheless remained very personal with her own possessions very much in evidence. The corridors and communal spaces are very light and cheerful with aspects over the gardens. In the dementia unit, there were many visual stimulations to trigger memories and the staff are wonderful and patient in their conversations with the residents to bring back all those memories. Mum’s needs were always attended to with respect, dignity, cheerfulness and patience. Sadly we lost mum at the end of 2021 but again we were hugely relieved that the Rose Star and Garter were able to provide outstanding end of life care and we were left speechless at the level of love and care that she received at that time.

My mother moved to Royal Star and Garter from another local Care Home in the area mid December 2021. I have not regretted the move and find everything about the Royal Star and Garter to be first class. My mother is now back to how she was before she entered the previous care home and I am so thankful to the staff at RS&G for everything they have done for her. The staff are so caring and always take the time to speak and update me on my mum. My only regret is not choosing the Royal Star & Garter in the first place and having to watch my mother suffer in a care home that was not suitable for her needs.

My dad moved to Royal Star and Garter in High Wycombe as he needed nursing care on discharge from hospital. His stay was only short-lived as he was in his final few weeks of life, and he sadly passed away five weeks later in November 2021.

Dad was not mobile, but the staff were able to move him around the spacious room from bed or chair to bathroom with the ceiling hoists. He was able to have his electric reclining chair by the window, looking out over the garden, and we put pictures and photos up for him.

The staff were very friendly and caring, nothing was too much trouble, and Dad felt very happy and lucky to be there.

My family and I are very grateful that Dad was able to spend his final weeks being cared for by such lovely, warm, friendly, caring people who treated him with dignity and respect, and they are all truly amazing.

I would have no hesitation in recommending Royal Star and Garter, High Wycombe to anyone.

The Royal Star and Garter in High Wycombe have been great at looking after my Grandfather. He became a resident during the Pandemic which could have made the process more stressful but the team did a great job at making us feel at ease and keeping us up to date on changes.
