My mum came into Mortain Place in August 2025 and it's been the best decision we made as a family.
The level of care my mum has received has given her back the health, safety and dignity that her dementia was stealing from her.
The staff are all incredible. The kindness, patience and understanding
with both my mum and us the family has been incredible. We now can't imagine Mum being anywhere else.
Reply from Katie Brewster, General Manager at Barchester Mortain Place Care HomeThank you so much for your amazing review. This means so much to our team and it is greatly appreciated. We will continue to give your Mum the best life possible with our team fully supporting her. Kind regards, Katie.

My aunt Margaret has been a resident at Mortain Place for several years and loves it there, the room is clean when we visit and she has put on weight. We occasionally join her for lunch which is well prepared with plenty of options, she enjoys going out for coffee with us accompanied by a carer.

Initial requirement was for 2-4 weeks respite care for my mother, and made inquiries of several local homes.
Chose Mortain Place as apart from excellent facilities, from the initial enquiry through to first visit and then agreement to place my mother there, I found the whole process to be efficient,
informative, and most importantly, there was a genuine interest of what I was looking to achieve for the time that my mother was to spend there. My mother's stay has been extended and her condition has improved considerably.
I have found the staff and management to be fully engaged, and most of all, my mother has had nothing to complain about.......

My experience moving my mother to Mortain care home.
I had good support organising the finances arrangements with the Administrator Manager all in good time.
General Manager talked through all our options with myself and my mother, and all staff gave us excellent support in moving my mother into
the care home.
My Mother received incredible welcome on her first day moving into the home, and she was made to feel so welcomed.
The maintenance team supported us in hanging up my mother painting on her walls, they were kind and supportive.
And this helped my mother feel so settled in her room.
All Mortain staff has made us feel as a family so welcomed and supportive.
Mortain care is a very warm loving care home.

The care home is a very caring experience for my mother in law and she is happily settled. All of the staff are very accommodating and helpful and ensure she has a comfortable time. Nothing appears to be too much trouble when requests for baths etc are made. The care home is warm, airy and comfortable.
My mother in law is happy with the food and eats well.

If I ever have to moved into a care home again, Mortain Place would be my first choice.
Everyone was so caring and kind and as I had to be away from home I couldn't have been happier.
The room was comfortable and the food was good.
Thank you very much!

My Mum had a nasty fall so we wanted her to have some respite so she could be properly looked after while she recovered. I chose Mortain Place as I absolutely loved it as soon as I walked in. The place is gorgeous, lovely soft comfortable furnishings, calming colours, very spacious room and beautifully
clean. But more than that, are the staff. They are truly remarkable, nothing is too much and they go out of their way to ensure Mum is extremely well cared for, she is treated like the most important person. To us, it's invaluable she is happy, safe and comfortable and Mortain Place delivers that in spades!! Mum will be returning again next week for another respite stay and it will just be a matter of time before she is a permanent resident. It's a truly special place!

The home is immaculately clean in all areas at all times. Facilities are excellent with many lounges and quiet corners, the ground floor bistro is always available with drinks and home made treats. The garden is small, but there's a patio for sitting, flower tubs, and in fine weather carer led walks.
External services (hairdressing etc.) are brought in and well used. Food is excellent, although sometimes I've heard that a second helping is requested by a resident (it must be good!). I've always found the staff to be very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. There's a dedicated activities organiser, who arranges a variety of activities, usually one each morning and afternoon. Mainly run by the carers, but often a school or animal organisation come to the home, and occasionally an outside entertainer. My resident participates in most of these activities. Mortain Place also organises trips to theatres, garden centres, etc.. A lovely place to live.

Mortain Place Eastbourne.
The staff have all been incredibly helpful and a pleasure to deal with. They all seem to go out of their way to ensure guests have everything they meed and are comfortable. The entire place is kept spotlessly clean and the refreshment station is kept supplied, the food served
in the restaurant is excellent as well as nutritious. I highly recommend.

My mum has been here in Mortain for 5years.i would not hesitate to recommend this care home ,although the costs are high the standard of care is overall excellent, and all the carers do a excellent job and go up and above ,to treat and care for my mum ,like they would there own family.they keep
you informed on issues that come up on her care , and medication etc.If u see any when visiting they are happy to answer any questions on your relatives care. The cleaning team do a excellent job keeping the unit spotlessly clean.there is quiet a lot going on with activities and outings and the staff do a outstanding job.when I see one of the staff around she often updates me on what my mums done. The environment when you enter seems happy and relaxed. My mum is in the upstairs unit ,and again the environment is very relaxed and residents seem relaxed and happy.
Many thanks to all staff at Mortain

I spent a week at Mortain Place after having a hip replacement. It was the best decision I could have made and the perfect way to build up my confidence and skills with crutches before going home. I felt safe, secure and looked after from the start. I cannot praise the staff highly enough for their
friendliness and thoughtful care. It may sound like a small thing, but having them always use your name makes a difference. Visitors were made very welcome and there are plenty of informal places to sit and chat over coffee - and very good cake.
I will certainly be recommending Mortain Place. Thank you to everyone for getting me on the road to recovery so quickly.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.931)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.931) out of 10 for Barchester Mortain Place Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 35 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.931 for Barchester Mortain Place Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (391 Excellents x 5) + (25 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 418 Ratings = 4.931
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Mortain Place Care Home is based on 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 35 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
