Our mother has been at Mortain Place for over 2 years now. We could not be happier with the care she has received. The staff are always kind, friendly and compassionate. Mum is treated with dignity and respect at all times. The entire team go out of their way to ensure her comfort. As a family we always
feel listened to and any concerns we might have are acted on. Thank you.
Reply from Katie Brewster, General Manager at Barchester Mortain Place Care HomeThank you, Caroline, for your lovely review they really do mean a lot to us. Knowing that Mum is happy and receiving the wonderful care that all Mortain staff give is exactly why we are here. She really is part of the family.

CQC reports are true read them! There is a lack of care and safety in this home. The manager holds a video call for staff, leaving vulnerable residents not cared for, ask yourself is this OK? I have written reviews that have not been posted, many good staff have left, agency staff used more, to cover
understaffing. Neglected vulnerable residents, basic care needs not met, don’t be fooled by many reviews, staff and residents writing them as asked to by management.
Reply from Katie Brewster, General Manager at Barchester Mortain Place Care HomeWe’re really sorry to hear again that you are unhappy with some elements of the care experience for your mother whilst she was living at Mortain Place. I understand that your concerns are currently being looked into and a response will be sent out to your family in due course. I would like to reassure you that staff are not permitted to leave reviews regarding the care home on any platform and this is continually monitored by our teams. If you need anything further, please don’t hesitate to contact the feedback team again at feedback@barchester.com.

The care home is friendly and welcoming and the decor and rooms are excellent, more like a hotel than a home. The photographs in the corridor make it seem welcoming, more like a home from home, this is helpful for residents who have had to leave their own homes and make the change to live somewhere
different for whatever reason.
Reply from Stacey Gardiner, Customer Relationship Manager at Barchester Mortain Place Care HomeThank you. It is always nice to hear from residents, family and also friends of the home too. We value feedback and strive to be the best we can in every aspect.

From being unable to get in or out of bed when I arrived, thanks to the care and attention of the nurses, I can now get in and out of bed, walk around the room, sometimes without a Zimmer, clean my teeth, shave and change my clothes. I can now walk to the dining room to join my wife for lunch. Breakfast
and dinner are always delivered to me and I am never rushed to finish my meals.

I have lived here for a year now and I enjoy living here. The food is very good, comfortable bedroom and the staff are very good, helpful when needed. My main hobby is ballroom dancing and when possible I enjoy going to the theatre. We go out on trips in our minibus. It feels very homely.

Mortain Place has been a godsend to myself and my brother for my mother's care. It is an extremely special place, with wonderful staff, gorgeous layout/rooms, lovely food and multiple activities. Never once in her entire time staying with Mortain have either my brother or myself been in any way worried
or concerned with her care.
I have visited the home at all times of the day and evening, from Monday through to Sunday and never seen anything other than happy and relaxed residents.
The staff are always on hand and whenever there have been difficulties with my mother's mood, the higher level of close monitoring has been great. The staff go over and beyond, preempting any potential issues. There is also very close cooperation with the nearby doctor's surgery for medical issues.
Thank you so so much to all the wonderful staff.
Reply from Catherine Brewster, General Manager at Barchester Mortain Place Care HomeThank you, Tim. We will pass your wonderful comments on to each and every one of the staff here. It is with a sad heart that my sister and I have to move our father to nursing care, from Mortain Place. He has been there for the last 19 months and calls it 'home'. He has been extremely well looked after by all of the wonderful staff there. Myself as a constant visitor to the care home, I have always
been made to feel welcome, and there is always someone there to talk to about Dad. A big warm thank you to everyone, especially the senior staff.
Reply from Catherine Brewster, General Manager at Barchester Mortain Place Care HomeThank you Liz. We loved having Dad with us and we really hope he has settled into his new home as he did with us. Please say hello from all the team here at Mortain Place.

My father has been in Mortain for 19 months and from the start was made to feel very welcome and at home. The staff all went out of their way to ease him into his new way of life in a care home. He had recently been bereaved. I’ve never had any cause for concern over his health or well-being. His room
is nice, comfortable and spotlessly clean. His sometimes fussy meal requirements, and constant need for 'a cuppa’ are cheerfully fulfilled. The staff, in particular the senior carers, are all very kind and personable. They treat my father as an individual, not just as one of the collective residents. His wishes are respected, and his dignity is maintained. My queries have always been dealt with effectively and efficiently, and the manager is generally always available. It is with sadness that we’ve got to move my father to a nursing home. My sister and I, as well as our dad, are sorry to say goodbye to the care team at Mortain and I thank you all for taking such kind care of him.

My mum was here for almost 4 years. The first two years were great. Fabulous staff and management. Then went downhill. All caring and loving staff left, and management changed. No trust at all in the care and well-being of my mum. Meetings and conversations had with management were ignored or turned
around to make our complaints look like lies. My mum had 3 safeguards placed on her, then a 4th one put in place up to the day we finally got her out of there, to a caring properly managed dementia care home. My mum had injuries not reported, and care and hygiene were poor. Good carers left and would never return. They were disgusted by what had evolved, from a lovely place to a nightmare. Constant worries that my mum would be okay each day. No quality of care or trust. Sadly we did have it in the beginning but was totally blown apart these last 18 months. Don't be fooled by the nice deco. It's the care and empathy that counts.

My dad had to enter a care home a few weeks ago and has found it fairly difficult to adjust. Any concerns or issues have been addressed and resolved very promptly and he is now settling in well. All the staff, management, admin, carers, housekeeping and entertainment etc have been wonderful. I'm glad
to say that Dad is now enjoying life again after a few years of struggling on his own in his own home.

My mum went to Mortain Place in early January for some respite following an illness over Christmas. Soon after her arrival, it became clearer that she was very unwell and in fact, had terminal cancer that was only diagnosed while she was there. We are a large family of medics and Mum was a retired nurse,
so we recognise good care when we see it. We had not expected Mum to need end-of-life care there but faced with this diagnosis, the team at Mortain Place said they would look after her until she died. I cannot thank the team there enough for the support they gave Mum. Everyone was incredibly kind and Mum was looked after with dignity, laughter and kindness throughout. We are a large family and Mum had lots of friends, all of whom wanted to see her. This was all made possible by the team and nothing was too much bother. Thank you all for looking after Mum and us. We will never forget your kindness. Barchester, please look after those staff, as the home is nothing without them.

My aunt has been a resident at Mortain Place over the last 2 months, as respite following a fall at home. From my first phone call, the staff and management team have been very responsive and my aunt has received great care and attention, giving me complete peace of mind. Any queries or concerns I had
were dealt with quickly. The staff have been excellent helping my aunt with personal care, while she had a broken wrist. She was always in great spirits whenever I visited and was always up and dressed. She has enjoyed the food and has had chiropody care and a haircut whilst being a resident. I'm very grateful indeed for the care and attention my aunt has received and would certainly recommend Mortain Place.

Anyone with good ethics and morals would not work in Mortain Place. Anyone working in the care industry should have principles of right and wrong. All the staff that have left, and there are many know what Mortain Place is like, and residents that have moved out are having a greater quality of life.
Having a Manager who is not fit for purpose permeates throughout so any hope of a well-led team is minimal.
My Mum has CQC Safeguarding her well-being, keeping her safe from harm and neglect until Mum leaves.
Don’t be fooled by the decor and sales pitch, there are good care homes out there, this is not one of them. Protect your loved ones. The latest CQC also highlights many concerns in this Home.

My mother has been both a respite and now a dementia resident and during all of her stay we found the staff both caring and attentive. Mum took her time to settle in and presented a challenge to the staff. This challenge was met with professionalism and a high level of support. As a family, we have
absolutely no regrets in selecting this establishment. Indeed, we have nothing but the highest praise for all of the staff from management to housekeeping.

Not having gone through this experience with my own parents, I have found it a strange time but looking at it as a support for my wife. I can say without fear of contradiction that my 'mum' is receiving the best care possible. I have watched the way she has been looked after with admiration by all the
care home staff. Nothing is too much for them to do to make my 'mum' comfortable and well looked after.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.931)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.931) out of 10 for Barchester Mortain Place Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 35 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.931 for Barchester Mortain Place Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (391 Excellents x 5) + (25 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 418 Ratings = 4.931
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Mortain Place Care Home is based on 35 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 80 registered maximum number of service users is 16, which has been reached with 35 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I love being organised and helping others, which really drew me to this role. I have a passion for delivering excellent customer service. I look forward to meeting new residents and their families and helping them with their journey.

I have a Miniature Dachshund called Winston. He keeps me very busy outside of work, and I love taking him for nice walks in the country with my partner, Adam. I also enjoy a Thai Massage, which I find very relaxing, often combined with reflexology. I like to participate in DIY projects at home and enjoy socialising with friends and family.
