My dad had to enter a care home a few weeks ago and has found it fairly difficult to adjust. Any concerns or issues have been addressed and resolved very promptly and he is now settling in well. All the staff, management, admin, carers, housekeeping and entertainment etc have been wonderful. I'm glad to say that Dad is now enjoying life again after a few years of struggling on his own in his own home.

Reply from Catherine Brewster, General Manager at Barchester Mortain Place Care Home

Thank you so much for your lovely review. It is a pleasure looking after Dad. He is thriving and as you said enjoying life here at Mortain place. He is getting involved in all aspects of life in our home and it is lovely to see him so happy.

My mum went to Mortain Place in early January for some respite following an illness over Christmas. Soon after her arrival, it became clearer that she was very unwell and in fact, had terminal cancer that was only diagnosed while she was there. We are a large family of medics and Mum was a retired nurse, so we recognise good care when we see it. We had not expected Mum to need end-of-life care there but faced with this diagnosis, the team at Mortain Place said they would look after her until she died. I cannot thank the team there enough for the support they gave Mum. Everyone was incredibly kind and Mum was looked after with dignity, laughter and kindness throughout. We are a large family and Mum had lots of friends, all of whom wanted to see her. This was all made possible by the team and nothing was too much bother. Thank you all for looking after Mum and us. We will never forget your kindness. Barchester, please look after those staff, as the home is nothing without them.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It was our pleasure to look after Mum until she passed. We pride ourselves on treating those we care for with dignity and kindness. We have passed your comments on to our team.

My aunt has been a resident at Mortain Place over the last 2 months, as respite following a fall at home. From my first phone call, the staff and management team have been very responsive and my aunt has received great care and attention, giving me complete peace of mind. Any queries or concerns I had were dealt with quickly. The staff have been excellent helping my aunt with personal care, while she had a broken wrist. She was always in great spirits whenever I visited and was always up and dressed. She has enjoyed the food and has had chiropody care and a haircut whilst being a resident. I'm very grateful indeed for the care and attention my aunt has received and would certainly recommend Mortain Place.

Anyone with good ethics and morals would not work in Mortain Place. Anyone working in the care industry should have principles of right and wrong. All the staff that have left, and there are many know what Mortain Place is like, and residents that have moved out are having a greater quality of life. Having a Manager who is not fit for purpose permeates throughout so any hope of a well-led team is minimal.
My Mum has CQC Safeguarding her well-being, keeping her safe from harm and neglect until Mum leaves.

Don’t be fooled by the decor and sales pitch, there are good care homes out there, this is not one of them. Protect your loved ones. The latest CQC also highlights many concerns in this Home.

My mother has been both a respite and now a dementia resident and during all of her stay we found the staff both caring and attentive. Mum took her time to settle in and presented a challenge to the staff. This challenge was met with professionalism and a high level of support. As a family, we have absolutely no regrets in selecting this establishment. Indeed, we have nothing but the highest praise for all of the staff from management to housekeeping.

Very friendly caring staff and I enjoy visiting. Recently we were invited to join in with the entertainment which was enjoyed by residents and staff. We previously had lunch, the service was like a good restaurant with waitress-style service from the hostess, there is always something going on to entertain.

Not having gone through this experience with my own parents, I have found it a strange time but looking at it as a support for my wife. I can say without fear of contradiction that my 'mum' is receiving the best care possible. I have watched the way she has been looked after with admiration by all the care home staff. Nothing is too much for them to do to make my 'mum' comfortable and well looked after.

A very warm welcome at Mortain on each of my visits to see my neighbour who has now been a resident at Mortain for 2 years. We share time in the Bistro with complimentary coffee and cake, spoilt for choice. The staff are so friendly and the management team have always been so helpful and caring. My neighbour is settled, happy and very well cared for.

My grandmother received absolutely dreadful care that was so neglectful as to be considered abuse. No dignity was given and was never helped in getting up, washed and dressed. Bedding was always soiled and staff scarce. Grandmother has settled in brilliantly in her new care home and has got a lot better cognitively since she left Mortain Place.

Whilst many of the staff were Ok, the management was very poor. My Mother in Law was often left in her nightclothes throughout the day.

The record keeping was often incorrect, for instance, cot sides were marked as OK when she didn’t even have any.

My grandmother was at Mortain Place until recently when we had to move her away as her basic needs weren't being met.
The needs of individuals living with dementia were also not being met.

From our experience some of the care staff were good but others clearly had a lack of training caring for patients with dementia.

Meals are good in quality and surroundings, and the accommodation is very clean and appropriate to the circumstances. Highly recommended.

I was very apprehensive about sending my mum into a care home at such a young age. How wrong I was! Everyone is so accommodating, not just with my mother but with me also. I am always updated regularly on how she is getting on and have always been made to feel welcome, after all, it is my mother's home now.

My mum and I greatly appreciate the recent changes in her dedicated memory loss/early dementia care unit. The staff no longer rotate their duties throughout the other specialised areas and can now create a family atmosphere for a maximum of fourteen residents. The difference in my mum's mood, her sociability and her participation is apparent. The staff are able to know her better, she now recognises them and her fellow residents. The extra individual care and the introduction of appropriate stimulating activities have made a huge difference to her daily living "in the moment". I now leave, after my regular visits, full of confidence that my mum's care is of the highest quality and with the knowledge that I will be informed of any deterioration in her health or well-being. This recent month of positive change has greatly reduced my concerns for my much-loved mother.
