My good friend moved into Birkdale Tower Lodge in May. I must say how happy she is. Since moving into the home she has made friends and has the much-needed help and support that she needed when she needs it. The home is beautiful and maintains very high standards. The food is delicious and my friend
enjoys it very much. There are activities to keep people busy however my friend isn't one for always joining in. Staff are very friendly and I can hear them talk with her when we are on the phone.
Reply from Gill Thompson, Lodge Manager at Birkdale Tower Thank you so much for your kind review. We are very pleased that your friend has settled and is enjoying life at Birkdale Tower Lodge. Our aim is to provide support to our residents when needed to enable them to remain as independent as possible. I will share your feedback with our staff.

Mum absolutely loves living at Birkdale Tower Lodge. Every time I speak with her she is happy and full of praise for all the wonderful staff. Even though it has been difficult this year with visiting restrictions and lockdown, staff have kept me informed of what's going on we had video calls and now
visit in a dedicated visitors room which is fantastic.
Reply from Gill Thompson, Lodge Manager at Birkdale Tower Thank you, David, for your kind words. We appreciate that this year has been very unpredictable and as we continue to live through this difficult time of COVID-19. To receive a lovely review is much appreciated. We understand how hard it has been for families not being able to be with their loved ones at this time. In addition to our dedicated visitor pod, we also have a Facebook portal where you can see mum on a big screen. Feel free to contact for a video call anytime.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.713)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.713) out of 10 for Birkdale Tower is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 24 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.713 for Birkdale Tower is calculated as follows: ( (218 Excellents x 5) + (57 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 282 Ratings = 4.713
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Birkdale Tower is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 55 registered maximum number of service users is 11, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Manager

I am so proud to be the manager of Birkdale Tower. I’m extremely passionate about providing our 5-star luxury experience to some of the most vulnerable in our society, because they truly deserve the best and are just in need of help.

My favourite part of my role is getting to know each individual and understanding what approaches work best for their unique needs. I take real pride in creating positive, person-centred experiences that make a genuine difference in people’s daily lives. I love coming to work, not knowing what new challenges await and what new people I can meet.

I've worked in care all my working life since I was 18, but it was sort of a family business; my mother and her mother were care home managers, so it was an extremely natural decision. I worked hard, climbing the ladder and achieved my first managerial role when I was 29, achieving my first goal with CQC at the same age. I think what makes a good manager in our industry is someone who sets the tone for compassion and quality. It’s about supporting staff so they can provide the best quality of care, fostering teamwork, and always leading with empathy and understanding.

Outside of work, I’m a proud dad of 2 and a bit of an adventurer. I love nothing more than to don my walking boots and go to the Lakes or Wales. If I can drag along my daughters Bella and Gracie, then even better!

Job Title: Client Service Advisor Joined: 2019

As a Client Service Advisor for Sandstone Care, I have the privilege of helping people who are seeking care for a loved one—or even for themselves. From personal experience, I understand that finding the right home, where your loved one feels supported and well cared for, can sometimes be daunting. Many people feel overwhelmed when navigating the social care system, particularly when it comes to finances and care needs.

My role allows me to support you by ensuring you have all the information you need regarding the facilities available in the home, room fees, financial assistance that may be offered by the local authority, and details about the category of care. I can also arrange visits to the home so you can experience firsthand the warm and welcoming atmosphere we strive to provide in all of our homes.

I absolutely love my role, and over the past two and a half years, I have had the pleasure of supporting many individuals and families in finding their new forever home. I look forward to continuing my work with Sandstone Care and helping more people on their care journey.
