We are so thankful we found Upton Mill for our mum. All the staff are so attentive and caring to residents and their families. From the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted with a smile and a "how are you". It's wonderful to see all the activities on social media, so we can still see mum even
when we can't be there. Thank you to all the staff and all they do.

Excellent premises
Delightful and helpful staff
Good food and ambience
The genuine attempt to encourage the residents to engage in social intercourse is to be particularly commended
In my particular case because I am a considerable distance away the arrangements to change doctors arrange hospital
transportation is particularly helpful

My mother lived at Upton Mill for 5 months before she died there. The carers were brilliant - with one or two exceptions, they were kind, efficient, took great care, they loved mum. The care home enabled my sister and I to stay 24/7 with Mum in her last days. All the staff were friendly, supportive
and caring. They all knew Mum's name and treated her respectfully. We never regretted choosing Upton Mill. Our 2 concerns were 1) using district nurses and 2) very expensive compared with the wages carers were paid.

Upton Mill is a great home. You will always be greeted with a genuine smile, all staff are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. All areas are spotlessly clean and the food is to a very high standard. Activities are given a lot of thought and it is really good to see everyone mixing and enjoying
themselves. Recently my father had a birthday and we reserved a dedicated room for such events. We were able to decorate it with balloons, banner and a cake. A three course meal was served to a total of ten guests which made his birthday a great family occasion.

The team at Upton Mill pull out all the stops to take good care of my mother who has aphasia! Today they organised a special birthday lunch in the Bistro with wine and freshly made birthday cake and all sang Happy Birthday and she laughed and really enjoyed it all! Every effort is made to help my mother
whose illness is challenging, over all the challenges the staff have developed good relationships with my mother and do their upmost to accommodate her needs.

I chose Upton Mill Care Home for convalescent care following spinal surgery. I was made very welcome and can honestly say I enjoyed my stay. The staff are all friendly, nothing is too much trouble, and all my needs were met.
The activities were not of interest to me because I was only short stay and
had my own visitors.
There was plenty of food and drinks available, a lovely informal coffee area with biscuits every day.

Despite my concerns at the terrible state of my mum's feet, my meetings at senior level, photographic evidence and requests for medical help, the response was very poor and slow. Personal hygiene is not adequate for all body parts. Showers are infrequent unless I request them, fingernails are never
cut, not enough time is given for personal care despite the staff being caring. Too many agency carers fill in - not ideal for elderly people. Dirty clothes are not washed and keep being worn.

My wife stayed here for a week and found the service and staff excellent. Apart from a few minor lapses in service e.g. liquid not thickened at the start and I found one tablet had been left on the table on one day when I visited. All these were dealt with at the time and the staff and management were
very quick in addressing these minor issues. Overall, my wife came out looking better than when she went in.

Experiencing considerable breathlessness subsequent to a chest infection, I sought respite care as I was temporarily unable to care for myself. I also wished to avoid burdening my children. I had heard well of Upton Mill and having been assessed, took the offer of residential care for a week. Being
in the home was the right thing to do. I have been well cared for, warm and rested. The public rooms are well furnished and pleasant. The meals are well-presented, of good quality and nutritionally varied. The staff are courteous and kind and there is a wide selection of entertainment available. I shall bear it in mind for future needs as they arise.

My father moved to Upton MIll after losing his wife. He has mild dementia and was sad and confused. From day one he has felt welcomed and cared for. Staff have gone the extra mile to help him settle and feel at home. Healthwise he is now much better than when he lived at home. He is flourishing and
as a family, we are very happy with his care.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.665)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.665) out of 10 for Upton Mill Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 49 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 48 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.665 for Upton Mill Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (417 Excellents x 5) + (135 Goods x 4) + (22 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 579 Ratings = 4.665
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Upton Mill Care Home is based on 48 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 64 registered maximum number of service users is 12.8, which has been reached with 48 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
