"Hello, I’m the Manager of Hengist Field Care Home in Sittingbourne. I joined the Nellsar family as Manager here at the Home in November 2018, bringing with me 34 years' Nursing experience from working in a variety of UK and overseas care settings. Our wonderful team here provide high-quality care while ensuring that our residents enjoy all aspects of life within our Home.
Hengist Field Care Home was opened in 2011 and the design fits in beautifully with the surrounding Kent countryside of Oast Houses and orchards. We have first-class facilities here for our residents to enjoy and are developing many new and exciting ideas and initiatives to enhance daily life within the Home. Our gardens and the surrounding area are stunning and these include a spectacular courtyard, sensory garden and an area where residents enjoy growing soft fruits in the summer.
On warm sunny days lunch is often served in the gardens and families are welcome to relax with loved ones and enjoy quality time together. We pride ourselves in promoting a caring, family-orientated atmosphere, where we extend our support to friends and families of our residents.
We have a Friends of Hengist Support Group to support relatives who find it helpful to share their experiences with others in similar circumstances and the desire to learn more about the illness or condition that affects their relative. We also hold Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends Information Sessions. These are very informal and are designed to give people a greater awareness and understanding of how Dementia may change their loved ones.
We like to make each day meaningful for residents of our Home. Our Activities team are always planning something different. Every week we have a range of organised activities, which may include; exercise classes, musical mornings, coffee mornings, food tasting, arts and crafts or musical therapy.
Our Well-Being Team are on hand to deliver one to one relaxing sessions which may be in the form of a massage, or aromatherapy which has wonderful benefits to the holistic health of residents. Our Cinema room plays a film of the day which runs twice a day every day – so our residents can enjoy the nostalgia of popcorn and an old movie. In the summer, we have BBQs every month, with live music – an opportunity for residents, relatives, friends and staff to get together and enjoy each other’s company.
A daily Lunch Club also allows residents living in different units within the Home to meet up, enjoy a meal and spend some time together in one of our tastefully decorated dining rooms. We extend a warm welcome to everyone who wishes to join us when we participate in charity events including Alzheimer’s Society Cup Cake Days and The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning organised by Macmillan Cancer Support.
We host relatives and residents meetings at which discussions are held about how families can become more involved and how we, as a Care Home, can continue to improve upon all aspects of our care and services provided at the Home. We implement any suggested new activities, or ideas, or menu suggestions, and then we meet again to discuss how well these were received."
