Hengist Field ticked all our boxes from the time we walked into the consideration of all staff. Everyone did their best to carer for the needs of residents. Probably the best praise came from visiting friends, who said: "I wish mum has been in a place like this".

Everyone at Hengist Field is so friendly and helpful. My mum became a resident here in August, and as I live 300 miles away, so it is not easy for me to visit.

I have visited twice this month and am pleased and happy that my mum is taken care of to the highest standard. She is happy there and loves how well she is treated.

Mum has been a resident at Hengist Field for the last four and a half years. She has sadly deteriorated and now has Dementia, aged 93. She is well cared for by a team, of well trained and supportive carers. She has a lovely naturally lit room with a nice lookout. The home is currently undergoing some cosmetic changes, making it a nicer place for the residents to live and call home. The staff are also very supportive of their relatives and are happy to discuss any concerns or issues.

Overall Experience

Our Dad was in Hengist Field for the last three weeks of his life. Although Hengist was not our first choice, we are just so glad that he went there. The care and kindness he received was outstanding. Every member of staff that we came into contact with treated him with such respect, dignity and genuine compassion. When we had to leave him at the end of our visits, it was a true comfort to know that he would be taken care of in this way. Similarly, the sympathy and consideration the family were shown, was deeply appreciated - nothing was too much trouble, and any potential queries were pre-empted or dealt with immediately. At the end, all the staff enabled us to be with him, yet maintained dignified respect and gentle presence, supporting all of us through a significant and emotional time. It was obvious that they cared about Dad too. We would thoroughly recommend this facility.

On my first occasion of visiting Hengist Field Care Centre, I found it really welcoming and extremely focused at meeting the needs of every resident. The staff were so friendly and it was obvious they were dedicated to their care of the residents and their needs.

Everywhere looked spotless and the decor had been so carefully executed, the grounds were beautiful and a tranquil place for all.

Review from Gail W (Daughter of Resident) published on 16 August 2019 Submitted via Postal Card
Overall Experience

My mother has been a resident at Hengist Field for the past year. The care and attention she has received have been consistently high. She has gone through a period of rapid weight loss because of her refusal to eat most meals. Management and staff have worked together to ensure her meals have been appealing, nutritious and fortified. With gentle persuasion, persistence and encouragement she is now back on track and improving her weight gain. All the staff are amazing and I can't thank them enough.

When mum entered Hengist Fields it was for end of life care. Their caring attitude and the gentle environment extended her life for many more precious months. The staff - friendly and available to answer questions, always with a ready smile and gentle touch. When mum's condition deteriorated they couldn't have been kinder and allowed her a dignified, calm and peaceful death surrounded by loved ones.

Nobody in the family has needed 24-hour care before, so we were all new to this and didn't really know what to expect. I have been so pleased with the excellent care my mum has received. Every one of the staff has been so kind and good to mum, and to the whole family - from the manager to the laundry staff. I am so very grateful to you all.

"Hello, I’m the Manager of Hengist Field Care Home in Sittingbourne. I joined the Nellsar family as Manager here at the Home in November 2018, bringing with me 34 years' Nursing experience from working in a variety of UK and overseas care settings. Our wonderful team here provide high-quality care while ensuring that our residents enjoy all aspects of life within our Home.

Hengist Field Care Home was opened in 2011 and the design fits in beautifully with the surrounding Kent countryside of Oast Houses and orchards. We have first-class facilities here for our residents to enjoy and are developing many new and exciting ideas and initiatives to enhance daily life within the Home. Our gardens and the surrounding area are stunning and these include a spectacular courtyard, sensory garden and an area where residents enjoy growing soft fruits in the summer.

On warm sunny days lunch is often served in the gardens and families are welcome to relax with loved ones and enjoy quality time together. We pride ourselves in promoting a caring, family-orientated atmosphere, where we extend our support to friends and families of our residents.

We have a Friends of Hengist Support Group to support relatives who find it helpful to share their experiences with others in similar circumstances and the desire to learn more about the illness or condition that affects their relative. We also hold Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends Information Sessions. These are very informal and are designed to give people a greater awareness and understanding of how Dementia may change their loved ones.

We like to make each day meaningful for residents of our Home. Our Activities team are always planning something different. Every week we have a range of organised activities, which may include; exercise classes, musical mornings, coffee mornings, food tasting, arts and crafts or musical therapy.

Our Well-Being Team are on hand to deliver one to one relaxing sessions which may be in the form of a massage, or aromatherapy which has wonderful benefits to the holistic health of residents. Our Cinema room plays a film of the day which runs twice a day every day – so our residents can enjoy the nostalgia of popcorn and an old movie. In the summer, we have BBQs every month, with live music – an opportunity for residents, relatives, friends and staff to get together and enjoy each other’s company.

A daily Lunch Club also allows residents living in different units within the Home to meet up, enjoy a meal and spend some time together in one of our tastefully decorated dining rooms. We extend a warm welcome to everyone who wishes to join us when we participate in charity events including Alzheimer’s Society Cup Cake Days and The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning organised by Macmillan Cancer Support.

We host relatives and residents meetings at which discussions are held about how families can become more involved and how we, as a Care Home, can continue to improve upon all aspects of our care and services provided at the Home. We implement any suggested new activities, or ideas, or menu suggestions, and then we meet again to discuss how well these were received."
