My mum was in Hengist Field Care Centre for five years. We had our issues along the way, but during Covid, the home came into its own. My Mum thrived, was looked after and the staff did all they could to reassure her.
I had a good relationship with the manager and senior members of staff as well as the carers.

My mum became poorly on and off during 2022, sadly I lost her in August 2022, we are so grateful my Mum was able to live her days out there and not in hospital. Thank you Hengist Field Care Centre for all you did.

My mother has been receiving palliative care for over three years at Hengist Field Care Center and sadly recently passed away. Although it has been a difficult time for the whole family for the duration of her care, we are extremely grateful to all the staff and management for their level of service and the help provided. I feel blessed to have chosen this place for Mum to receive her care.

Were it not for the prompt action of the nurse, manager and her deputy I dread to think what would have happened. I went to Hengist Field Care Centre to recover from knee surgery. On the first morning, 22nd July, the nurse saw that the back of my leg was jet black. Doctors were contacted immediately and the anti-coagulant injections stopped immediately.

My only complaint is the downstairs windows only open about 6 cms. It should be able 15 cms to get some air in the heat we have had.

Reply from Silvia Barret, Operations & Compliance Manager at Hengist Field Care Centre

Thank you so much for such a positive review. I am really happy that the team was there for you when you needed them most and acted promptly. Unfortunately, the windows restrictions are required by Health and Safety regulations in the care homes. But moving forward as the climate is changing, we are looking to new solutions to improve ventilation during the hot season.

Visited a friend for 40 minutes between 14.50 and 15.40 on Saturday the 18th of June. He was not in his room which he has to vacate due to an ant problem in the bathroom.

He was in the lounge but it was a bit noisy so we moved to be able to have a conversation with him. After 20 minutes or so he was ready to go back to his room but had to wait as room was not cleaned up from ant powder. Otherwise, my friend was fine and seemed to enjoy our visit. Do hope the ant problem is resolved soonest.

My mother was in the courtyard in a lovely comfy chair fast asleep. She was dressed in nice clean clothes. Her hair had been styled and her nails painted. Mum looked peaceful. The assistant was most polite and helpful and when I heard her talking to other residents her manner was as caring and polite. The assistant's uniform was clean and fitted appropriately.

The atmosphere was restful. I did not feel uncomfortable sitting with mum for my visit. I was informed that Mum had recently had her cup of tea and morning snack.

Hengist is a beautiful purpose-built building with space both inside and out. Staff are kind and friendly and eager to please. Bedrooms and shared rooms are clean, light and pleasant. Activities are available every day, which is a boost to morale. The food is amazing and the wonderful facility to allow friends and relations to stay for lunch for £5 is a huge bonus.
My mother was welcomed and well cared for, on the whole. Areas which caused her stress, were staff with unfamiliar accents, not being allowed outside unattended (so I visit often to cover that need) and sometimes a slow response to needs (eg television not working). Increased coordination between staff, would help.
(One agency staff was very unprofessional. Addressed well: needs monitoring)
Mobile signal is very unreliable. My mother felt isolated in the evenings as they have to be in their rooms from 6pm.

Information about Hengist living (esp. telephone issues) needs to be supplied, for all new residents

My husband has been well looked after since his arrival in February. He enjoys the food but is surprised by the number of biscuits given to him as that was not part of his diet at home. He is not too keen on joining in activities as that was not part of his previous life. Enjoying travelling, bird watching reading, Codewords etc. He sometimes realises that he is missing these things, but he gets family visits at least three times a week.

The staff at this care home are their best asset, my mother was admitted to the home from hospital in April 2021 with severe illness and end of life conditions. The nurse and nursing staff at this site were exceptional in dealing with her multiple conditions including progressive cancer, severe bedsore grade 4 from a previous hospital, severe arthritis, and existing blood clots in right leg, diabetes, back injury and partial paralysis of lower legs, also existing bowel and hernia condition. She was also partially deaf and blind in one eye. We visited regularly 2 times a week or more until November. My mother was always kept in clean and presentable condition as was her room, the Nurses were informative and skilful and considerate and accurate with information. The reception staff were very helpful, kind and welcoming on every occasion. The personal care staff also turned and changed her very frequently. In my view, this care home is probably the best you will find. The family is very grateful for her care.

All the staff have been so kind and helpful to my Mum who has been a resident in Hengist Field Care Centre for over 5 years. Her dementia has recently gotten much worse where she is now needing a great deal more care and it is so nice to be able to see that the staff have stepped up to make Mums time as pleasant and as comfortable as they can.

They have made it as accessible as possible for us to see her and it is giving us peace of mind that she is amongst friends and well looked after.

My friend of 31 years, was so active during her lower years - a prolific fundraiser for the conservative association and mayor of Gravesend so I was shocked when she developed dementia and was taken to a care home. Her son lives in Spain so she has no family nearby. I visit her each month and have always found her well looked after in comfortable, clean surroundings. She has a lovely room and access to all amenities. The food looks attractive and well prepared so I no longer worry about her.

My mother was a resident of Hengist Field for 4 years up until September when she sadly passed away.
The staff on duty that particular day was absolutely excellent. I was very mindful that staff members spent more time with mum than we could do, particularly over the last 2 years. I know many of them became very attached to mum and to her would have been just as much a part of her family as we were.
In particular, I was more than satisfied that during her 4 years at Hengist Field, mum was very well cared for and received the best of care possible. I know that your staff took the trouble to get to know mum and her little ways, which meant a great deal to us as a family. It was particularly important to us during the lockdown when visiting was restricted. While busy, your staff always took the trouble to let us know how mum had been.

Over the years there have been a number of staff members dedicated to the care of mum, and I would like to thank every one of them.

"Hello, I’m the Manager of Hengist Field Care Home in Sittingbourne. I joined the Nellsar family as Manager here at the Home in November 2018, bringing with me 34 years' Nursing experience from working in a variety of UK and overseas care settings. Our wonderful team here provide high-quality care while ensuring that our residents enjoy all aspects of life within our Home.

Hengist Field Care Home was opened in 2011 and the design fits in beautifully with the surrounding Kent countryside of Oast Houses and orchards. We have first-class facilities here for our residents to enjoy and are developing many new and exciting ideas and initiatives to enhance daily life within the Home. Our gardens and the surrounding area are stunning and these include a spectacular courtyard, sensory garden and an area where residents enjoy growing soft fruits in the summer.

On warm sunny days lunch is often served in the gardens and families are welcome to relax with loved ones and enjoy quality time together. We pride ourselves in promoting a caring, family-orientated atmosphere, where we extend our support to friends and families of our residents.

We have a Friends of Hengist Support Group to support relatives who find it helpful to share their experiences with others in similar circumstances and the desire to learn more about the illness or condition that affects their relative. We also hold Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends Information Sessions. These are very informal and are designed to give people a greater awareness and understanding of how Dementia may change their loved ones.

We like to make each day meaningful for residents of our Home. Our Activities team are always planning something different. Every week we have a range of organised activities, which may include; exercise classes, musical mornings, coffee mornings, food tasting, arts and crafts or musical therapy.

Our Well-Being Team are on hand to deliver one to one relaxing sessions which may be in the form of a massage, or aromatherapy which has wonderful benefits to the holistic health of residents. Our Cinema room plays a film of the day which runs twice a day every day – so our residents can enjoy the nostalgia of popcorn and an old movie. In the summer, we have BBQs every month, with live music – an opportunity for residents, relatives, friends and staff to get together and enjoy each other’s company.

A daily Lunch Club also allows residents living in different units within the Home to meet up, enjoy a meal and spend some time together in one of our tastefully decorated dining rooms. We extend a warm welcome to everyone who wishes to join us when we participate in charity events including Alzheimer’s Society Cup Cake Days and The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning organised by Macmillan Cancer Support.

We host relatives and residents meetings at which discussions are held about how families can become more involved and how we, as a Care Home, can continue to improve upon all aspects of our care and services provided at the Home. We implement any suggested new activities, or ideas, or menu suggestions, and then we meet again to discuss how well these were received."
