On behalf of the entire family, I would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for everything the management and staff at Darwin Court did for our mom during her stay with you. The care Mom received since she moved into Darwin Court on 2 Mar 2024 was delivered professionally, with great
care, dedication and friendliness.
Mom felt calm, comfortable and relaxed in her lovely garden view room and felt warmth from everyone she met.
As visitors to Darwin Court, the family were made to feel very welcome and part of a community. All the staff, no matter what their role, were professional, approachable and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and staff always made themselves available to listen, help, advise and provide support to the family. This was fully recognised, acknowledged and greatly valued by the family.
Thank you again for taking care of our mom.
We are truly grateful for everything that everyone did.
Kind regards.

Everyone in the home is friendly, kind and helpful. Reception go above and beyond. Activity staff have great personalities full of fun have a lovely way with the residents. Mum is happy there. Big turnover of staff as most care homes have, which is a shame but staff in care try their best.
Reply from Simon Dixey, Manager at Darwin Court Care Home - Avery HealthcareThank you for your review. It's heartening to hear that the atmosphere at the home is characterised by warmth and support from both the reception and activity staff. While turnover can be a challenge in many care homes, we have worked hard on our recruitment and retention of our team to give us a stable and happy team who continues to strive for the best possible experience for all our residents.

Mum came to live at Darwin Court Care Home in January 2023. The care she received was exemplary. From the beginning, we could see that the emphasis was on the word home. Darwin Court became Mum’s home very quickly. We had her birthday here last year in a very special private dining room and she passed
away on her birthday this year. If she went to hospital when she returned, she was warmly welcomed back into the fold, staff always gathering around her. We felt that Mum was always safe at Darwin Court, we never worried that they were not taking care of her. On her final few days, they were very attentive to both Mum and us. Even once Mum had passed, their care for her was of the utmost respect. We were with Mum at the end but I’m sure had we not, they would have been there for her. After she had passed away, one of the carers sorted her out, when we went back to Mum, she looked beautiful, we then spent time with her and were never rushed. We have been told that we can pop in anytime for coffee.
Reply from Simon Dixey, Manager at Darwin Court Care Home - Avery HealthcareThank you for your review in relation to the care your mum received at Darwin Court. It highlights the warm and welcoming environment that made it feel like home for her, as well as the attentive and respectful care provided by the staff, especially during her final days. I am pleased you feel the staff went above and beyond to ensure your mother's comfort and dignity, even after her passing. The offer to pop in anytime for coffee stands, we want to promote a sense of community and ongoing support at our care home. Thank you again for your heartfelt words. Take care and we hope to see you soon.

We've been visiting Darwin Court for a couple of years now and we have to say that recently the home has improved so much, we always feel welcome, there is a 'caring feel' through the home, you always get a warm welcome and everyone speaks to you. The management is visible and nothing seems too much
trouble. However nice these things are the main person, my Grandma, is happy here. Thank you everyone.

All the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The care provided is very attentive and residents clearly like the staff. The attitude of staff is excellent and cheerful even in what can be difficult circumstances. Sometimes it seems as though rooms are not cleared of washing or bedding which is wet
quite as promptly as would be ideal.
Reply from Simon Dixey, Manager at Darwin Court Care Home - Avery HealthcareThank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the slight delay with used clothes and linen being removed, please be assured that we have picked this up with the whole team as we strive to improve and provide a service of the highest standard. The staff were very helpful. The service at meal times was excellent and they all were very good at remembering all names, personal touch was given at all times. The meal times, at first, seemed too late for breakfast and too early for dinner (as I have had at home) but soon got used to it. My only
criticism is that meals were variable in quality. Most were excellent, but some were poor, such as today's lasagna.

If your elder requires solely residential care, Darwin would probably suit. I would however caution if your loved one has dementia, this place offers more than it can deliver. Dementia is an illness that requires greater care as it progresses and presents with a variety of manifestations. It is my opinion
that Darwin is unable to provide a higher level of care required. Communication with head office is difficult and locally it is wanting.
Most of the staff are caring, dedicated people who, unfortunately, are hamstrung in what they are able to offer due to staffing levels. Do your research and be aware of the limitations before placing your loved one here.
Reply from Beth Fisher, Deputy Home Manager at Darwin Court Care Home - Avery HealthcareI am very sorry to hear about you and your mother's experience here at Darwin Court. We do provide dementia care, however, at times people do need more specialist care due to their needs and progression of their illness. Please be assured that your concerns will be addressed and escalated to the relevant departments.

In my opinion, more can be done in Darwin Care home as in one review all that glitters is not gold. Staff need to be trained they are dealing with dementia patients that cannot express themselves, so being deemed aggressive and problematic is not the way to address dementia as is the case at Darwin.
Not the level of care we thought it would be, expected it to be or lead to believe it would be.
Reply from Lee Asbury, Manager at Darwin Court Care Home - Avery HealthcareDear SB, I am sorry to hear of your disappointment, my door is always open and will always move swiftly to resolve any concern or shortfall. I do wish you had given me the opportunity to resolve items to which you refer, please be assured that staff training is comprehensive and currently at 96% attainment, other feedback suggests care is of a high standard. I will of course continue to monitor staff interactions, taking your concerns on board. I today visited each unit and was pleased to see excellent examples of kindness and care, Please do come in for a chat next time you visit.
Kind Regards, Lee

My Dad has been really ill recently and his level of required care increased substantially. The staff have been great helping him and making sure he gets the care he needs.
They have kept a close eye on him in order to stop him from deteriorating further and have brought in additional health professionals
to work with them to assist him getting back to his former level of independence.
They have been really good at encouraging him to try and get back on his feet, making sure he follows the exercises he has been given and making sure he keeps his fluid and food intake up even though he has not felt well.

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 112 registered maximum number of service users is 22.4, which has been reached with 38 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Kerry-Ann

Kerry-Ann Derry

Job Title: Home Administrator Joined: 2019

I joined the Avery Healthcare Family in 2019 having spent my whole working life in the care sector, from a retirement village to care homes.

Before joining Avery, I was an Administrator Assistant for another care provider.

After leaving school I went to college to complete my Level 2 and Level 3 in Health and Social care.

I would consider myself as kind, caring, hard worker and empathetic. In my spare time, I like to spend time with my family, read and go for walks.

I am very proud to be part of the Darwin court family.
