Bowes House is everything a care home for the elderly should be. The most important consideration is that my aunt is happy to call Bowes House "home".
In every aspect, I rate Bowes House "excellent". The building is light, airy and warm. The staff caring, welcoming and warm with sufficient time to
ensure the well-being of all residents. Food and drink isn't "institutional", ample in quantity of good quality with variety/choices to cater for all diets. Planned activities ensure residents maintain interests, are participating and encourage enjoyment.

Mum has been at Bowes House for 6 months in the dementia unit and is very happy there. The staff on the dementia unit are wonderful - unfailingly kind and upbeat and professional. Mum always looks amazing as they take care to choose her most glamorous clothes with her and are always trying out different
approaches to make her happy - favourite foods, drinks and music. She is more content there than I have seen her since this dementia journey started 5 years ago and loves all the staff - her face lights up when she sees them and they seem to get equal pleasure in seeing her. I know that she is very well looked after and I can trust the staff and the home to care for her to the highest possible standard. Mum has a lovely room overlooking the courtyard and enjoys watching the birds and the clouds and equally enjoys being in the main dining room where there is a lovely atmosphere and always something going on.

Although front of house gives the impression of a well-run establishment, care and staffing need to be addressed. There is no continuity of night staff and staffing levels. Particularly with health and safety issues. When the resident requests to see the doctor for an appointment this is not always
done and advice/prescription may follow.
Personal hygiene could be improved. General housekeeping and nutrition are very good.
Reply from Amy Wilson, AD at Bowes HouseThank you for taking the time to submit your review and your scores. I understand that the home manager has been in touch with you regarding some of the points above, and has hopefully been able to alleviate any worries you may have had. We are incredibly proud of the care we offer at Bowes House and our excellent team, which we feel is reflected in our CQC report, reviews on carehome.co.uk and elsewhere, and also our high satisfaction scores for relatives with loved ones in the home.

In regards to staffing levels, I would like to assure you that we always make sure we have the right numbers of team members across all our suites in the home, day and night, seven days a week, in order to run a safe, caring and high-quality service for all residents. There may be occasions where we have to use agency team members, such as to cover colleague holidays or illness, but we are very lucky to have some excellent agency staff who know the home and residents well, so there is always a continuity of care. We also have a dedicated GP that visits the home three times a week as part of his contract, and also attends at other times on request. We work very closely with the GP, as well as other healthcare specialists, to make sure every resident receives the highest levels of care and support whenever they need it and on an ongoing basis as their needs may change.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.817)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.817) out of 10 for Bowes House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 24 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.817 for Bowes House is calculated as follows: ( (232 Excellents x 5) + (43 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 279 Ratings = 4.817
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Bowes House is based on 23 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 90 registered maximum number of service users is 18, which has been reached with 23 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
