Overall Experience

Disappointing experience of two weeks of respite care for a 94-year-old recovering from a prolonged hospital stay. While basic care was ok, but there were many minor problems including poor communication re, appointments and medication etc, and slow responses to calls for assistance (perhaps because of Covid the home was short-staffed?). Often hard to find any staff when visiting, and main reception phone line often not answered for quite long periods. When things went wrong, the staff seemed defensive rather than apologetic. Finally, the patient sent home in great distress as the wheelchair taxi transport arranged for discharge was not provided. Response to letter of complaint very disappointing. The home has – or had – a reputation for being at the top of the range with a very high level of charges. Given treatment, in this case, we felt we had been misled and overcharged.

I loved this care home from the moment I walked in which is almost 4 years ago now. I had been searching for a home for Mum - she's special and I wanted somewhere special for her to live, and The Grand was exactly what I was looking for.
The facilities are excellent and the home, which is managed by the manager and her team, runs like clockwork. All of the staff are amazing and I have a high regard for each and every one of them. I don't think the home would be what it is without any member of this obviously very committed and caring team.

My mum has advanced dementia and can be challenging at times but I always witness empathy and understanding from the nursing team and carers, and this makes me happy she's in their care. In short, I can't thank them enough for everything they do for her.

I was delighted with the care my mother received at The Grand. The team could not have been more supportive both to her and the family and even under all the regulations of COVID they still were calm and professional. Also, we appreciate greatly the physios assessment team and contact with social services in order to get my mum back home. A huge thank you.

The staff at The Grand Care Home are first-class; kind, good-humoured and patient. My husband is always clean, smart and comfortable. During the Coronavirus epidemic, they went out of their way to enable me to speak on the phone to my husband and recently, to see him in Reception. When he tested positive for Coronavirus the nurses rang me frequently to reassure me about his condition and to ask about me. I cannot praise them highly enough.

I visited my mother earlier today. It is a ninety mile each way trip for me as I live in North Yorkshire, I was most impressed with the way your staff helped me to see my mother, bearing in mind the COVID-19 regulations. I was taken outside her room in the garden area and given wonderful help.

My dad has been living at The Grand for over three years. The excellent level of care and support he has received has never faltered. Every member of staff genuinely cares about the residents and nothing is ever too much trouble. This has been even more evident during the last few months of lockdown when the time has been made on 1:1 basis with residents to keep their spirits up.

Despite all the extra medical demands and stress of keeping everyone safe during the pandemic, staff have maintained a focus on the well-being of residents by actively engaging them in their special interests such as gardening and painting (in the case of my dad). On top of this, The Grand has kept us updated on Dad's health and well-being. What a great team and Grand family.

My Dad has resided very happily at The Grand for over three years now, where all aspects of care have consistently been of a very high standard. The last three months have, however, been difficult for us all, with separation from our loved ones perhaps being the toughest challenge. Despite additional medical and logistical demands on staff, ensuring that residents keep in touch with their families has been one of their top priorities. Communication has been brilliant. The staff have done their utmost to keep family members in touch. It has meant so much to us all.
I have received regular updates on Dad. I have been constantly reassured that Dad has been lovingly supported by everyone at The Grand. So, a big thank you to nursing staff, carers, management and reception. This support has enabled him to continue with his hobbies.

Carers have also been so thoughtful and have remained cheerful. I cannot thank The Grand enough for the wonderful care my Dad has received.

My mother has been a resident here since the home opened five years ago and has blossomed in the last couple of years, due entirely to the caring and friendly nature of the staff at all levels, whether they be they management or cleaners. We’d like to say how grateful we are for the imaginative ways in which the care home is looking after Mum, they have kept in touch with us over the last few weeks while we have all been in lockdown. It has been a massive reassurance to us to be able to both speak to and see Mum via Facetime whilst we are unable to visit her in person.

Lots of care homes provide caring and kind staff, but this is not enough. A care home needs to be run professionally as well. The Grand provides an all round excellence of service from the management and administrative staff to the skilled nurses and carers who support my husband. Having visited other Homes there is a very big gap between what The Grand offers and other providers in our area. All providers should take a look and learn.

Tracy Job Title:Home ManagerJoined: 2020

I am a qualified nurse and trained at the University of Central Lancashire, qualifying in 1999. Totalling 30 years of care/nursing experience, my passion lies with care homes, and I have extensive management experience as a home manager, including troubleshooting, care home turnaround and Regional management. These areas have given me a wealth of knowledge, and decided to come back into the daily running of the care home after being out and about, travelling many miles. I am proud to be part of the team here at The Grand and to work for New Care, working towards its vision. My team and I are dedicated to making each day different and special for residents.

The care we deliver is person-centred, ensuring that individual needs and requirements are met. It is important to us that residents retain as much independence as possible with support to continue pursuing the interests and hobbies they have always enjoyed.

Personal hobbies and interests include family, Horse riding and my three West Highland Terriers, Dave, Dottie & Alfie, A family unit themselves – you may see them in the home occasionally.

Rebecca
Rebecca Job Title:Deputy ManagerJoined: 2018

I have worked at New Care for 4 years and enjoyed my time at Ruddington Manor, but transferred to The Grand for a new challenge a year ago. I enjoy my job as a Care Manager and am now ecstatic to be successful in my new role as the Deputy Manager. I am able to have autonomy in my role, which helps me thrive and feel satisfied in my role. It's ‘Grand at the Grand’ as we say, and New Care look after their staff members really well with excellent opportunities for promotions, I can vouch for that. Every day is a different day, and I love that we can make our residents' lives special. I love seeing them smile every day.

Bridget
Bridget Job Title:Wellbeing CoordinatorJoined: 2015
I have worked for New Care for over 4 years. When I first walked into The Grand, I was amazed that a care home could look like a hotel; I was lost for words. I began as a Senior Carer and then transferred to the Wellbeing Team. I was then given the opportunity to lead the Wellbeing team.

New Care is a very family-oriented and person-centred company; nothing is too much trouble to meet the residents’ needs and wishes.

I look forward to coming to work each day, and I can’t believe I get paid to do a job that I love!

Selma
Selma Job Title:Head of CareJoined: 2022

I only started working in the care sector in 2021 as a carer at the Grand, and in 2022, I was encouraged to become a Team Leader. I have to admit that it was very difficult at the beginning for me; however, with great support from our Management team and colleagues, I have learnt a lot and completed my Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care in 2023. I have been given the amazing opportunity to step up as Head of Care in 2024, and I am enjoying learning and developing within my new role. I love our wonderful team and am very proud of the care and support we provide to all our residents, families and staff. In my spare time, I enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles, visiting interesting places and spending time with my family.

Paul
Paul Job Title:Head Chef

I lead our dedicated culinary team with over 15 years of experience as a Head Chef, specialising in the care sector. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep understanding that food is at the heart of our residents’ well-being and dignity.

I believe dining should be a joyful, fresh, and engaging experience for everyone. As Head Chef, I oversee all aspects of our kitchen, from menu planning and meal preparation to ensuring that every dish we serve is freshly made and full of flavour.

One of my key strengths is working with my team to create meals that meet a wide range of dietary needs. Whether that means preparing diabetic-friendly options, catering for allergies, or producing modified texture meals, we always strive for nutritional balance, great taste, and appealing presentation.

I’m incredibly proud of our team. We work closely together to meet the individual dietary needs of every resident. I genuinely enjoy the challenge of creating food that not only nourishes but also brings a little joy to the table each day.

For me, mealtimes are one of the highlights of the day - a chance to connect, care, and make a difference through good food.

I joined The Grand in January 2024, bringing experience as a care home administrator from a small residential home. Since joining the team, I've made significant progress in my role and am currently studying for my Level 3 Business Administration qualification, with wonderful support from the company throughout. I'm passionate about my work and deeply grateful for the opportunity to be part of The Grand Care Centre team.

Outside of work, I love travelling and have been fortunate to visit many countries around the world. Before moving to England, I spent two years living in Canada. I arrived in England at 19, and in the years since, I've built both my life and career here. It truly feels like my forever home, which is why I recently began the process of obtaining my British citizenship.

I'm highly motivated and care deeply about making sure our residents have a clean, safe, warm and welcoming environment to call home.
