My husband is a resident at Ermington house care home under mental assessment due to his dementia, the time he has spent here he's been treated with kindness and compassion and getting prompt treatment by a doctor when he had a stomach infection which then cleared up.
He's settling in well and is
enjoying the activities at the home and the beautiful scenery around the home as it's in the countryside.
The staff are welcoming and friendly and the Manageress is very approachable and listens to any concerns and acts promptly and I'm kept up to date on issues.
I haven't seen anything that causes me concern at the home.
I know my husband is safe and well treated at this home and have requested that he becomes a permanent resident here after his assessment ends.
Well done to the hardworking staff and management at Ermington house for your dedication and helping my husband have a better quality of life under your care.

Do not let your relatives stay here if you care about them. The home is dirty and unhygienic, a lot of the equipment is broken and it is totally understaffed. Some of the carers did show some empathy but they were so rushed off their feet there was no time for caring. My mother was left in bed for
days on end in silence. They didn't even bother to turn on the television or radio for her. She was not taken to the toilet when required and sometimes had to wait half an hour. There was little dignity and she was often left dirty. There was no assistance with eating and in the 6 weeks she was there she lost over 6kg.

I am strongly of the opinion this place should be closed. My mother deteriorated dramatically while she was there and it is taking weeks for her to recover. There are good homes out there but this is not one of them.

Do not trust the managers and as for the man they refer to the CEO I can not put in this review my thoughts about him

My sister was a resident at Ermington house for over a year until early 2025. Although I live far away and couldn't visit often, I was always reassured by the kindness shown by the staff. We were very close, and placing her in care was not an easy decision. It took her a while to settle in, but it was
clear that she was in safe hands. They cared for her with genuine warmth and respect. I always knew that she was safe, and comfortable, which meant a lot. Now that I've had time to process her passing, I wanted to share my gratitude. Thank you to everyone at the home for making a difficult time a little easier.

I wanted to acknowledge and specifically commend one carer in particular for the outstanding care and support he has provided to my dad. The care team as a whole shows compassion to my dad, who is happy and settled in the environment.

My Dad has been at Ashburton House now for 4 years and is very much at home there. The staff know and love him and I can't ask for more than that. They understand his needs and work hard to meet them, in a cheery and caring manner. His room feels personal to him and is usually clean. Staff are sometimes
able to take him out for a walk or to church, which means a lot. I always feel welcomed; managers are ready to listen and lead well, as demonstrated by the now stable and professional team there.

My Mother has been a resident of Ashburton House for just over twelve months. Initially, she was there for convalescence after a short period in hospital. She was very reticent about going into a care home, however, within weeks she stated that she did not want to go home as she was very happy and comfortable,
loved the caring, kind and smiley staff and thoroughly enjoyed the food, plus there was company and activities available.
Unfortunately, Mum ended up back in hospital in August and she's a shadow of her former self but the team were able to work around her needs and welcomed her back which has been a great relief to her family.
Yes, they could do with a few more hands on deck in all departments but the care is wonderful.

My brother-in-law has been permanent for over a month now, a respite before. He has stated to us as a family he's happy here.
He is so well looked after even with his complex needs, he gets treated with empathy and respect. He gets everything that's needed and a well-balanced diet. The carers are brilliant
with him and he enjoys a little banter too.
Recommendations would be 100% for the home, as he would put himself.

The home is run well, and the staff are great, they perhaps need a few more helping hands sometimes!
My mum is treated very well, and when we visit, we are always welcome.
The caring professionals are so patient and good, that they should be given a substantial pay rise in all homes.
Overall, we
are happy with the care my mum is receiving.

Our father has recently carried out a stint here. There are a few good members of staff who are overworked but the management is completely inadequate. The registered Manager should spend less time posing around and more time ensuring the home doesn't stink and facilities are improved. The whole place
smells and could be avoided by simple measures to keep furniture dry, I don't even want to think about how this affects infection control. Doors to upstairs areas broken leaving vulnerable patients able to access the stairwell for days. Patients are being left with medication and untrained staff dishing it out. Residents left sitting in mess and no attempt to clean properly. I have worked in busier care homes that were able to maintain a clean and lovely environment and this is beyond unacceptable. The food is absolutely awful, cheap horrible overcooked stodge for lunch that looked totally inedible and 2 dry crackers with a piece of cheese dished out for supper. I could go on and on.

My mum has been resident for two and a half years. From day one she has been well cared for. Difficult times through Covid were handled well. The only concern I have had is the shortage of staff over a long period.

Unfortunately, I cannot give a good review of this home. My parent was in here for a time and within that time was not looked after or protected enough. Certain issues were raised because a member of staff was not following general safeguarding rules and regs. There have been months of heartache for
the family trying to resolve the issue which has left a damaging trail of destruction in its wake. I have ticked one star because it wouldn’t let me score 0.

The front door is not locked people can just walk in unchallenged and residents can walk out. No enforcement of signing in. The carpets throughout are very dirty. Unsafe flooring (chipboard). Flammable materials stored in corridors contravening the fire regulations. Not been showered for four days.
By lunchtime had been left in a pyjama top. The room is in poor repair just a bare light bulb hanging from the ceiling. In for six days and had no feedback on how settling in as a new resident. Handrail on stairs only on one side. Bed wheels not locked plus more!
Reply from Michelle Theresa Wray, Care Director at Ermington House

Thank you for your review, at the time of this admission the home was undergoing a full refurbishment, this is now complete. All doors are activated via a keypad and all works are completed. We tirelessly work to ensure resident care and safety, and all feedback is welcome so we can continually improve our service. This complaint was fully investigated by CQC and QAIT and no action was required.

My mother has been a resident now for more than 10 months. =She is very elderly and has many needs that we [her family] could not meet after she had a spell in hospital. She settled quickly and my experience of the care she has received has been extremely positive. She needs help with all aspects of
her life and sometimes I chat with her about her views about the staff and the care she receives and she says everyone is very kind. Thinking about the interaction that our family have had with Ashburton House staff team I would also say that this has been first class. We pop in and out frequently and everyone is very helpful and positive towards us and we are kept up to date with how she's doing. For example she's putting on weight! We are all very happy with her placement and would recommend Ashburton House very highly.

I have nothing but praise for The Old School House. It's staff are efficient, respectful and friendly to visitors and residents alike.
Perhaps, though, the best recommendation for the home has come from my mother, herself. One day as I was leaving her after a visit, she told me (completely unsolicited),
'you mustn't worry about me being here. I'm very well looked after and the food is very good, too'.

I moved my husband to The Old School House in June 2022 after he had been in care for eighteen months. He settled immediately and is very happy. His multiple needs are catered for sympathetically and he is looking much better than when he arrived. The care team are attentive and his medication has been
reduced so his appetite has returned. I have every confidence in the care team and management.

Dad was negative about care homes in general, whilst living at home. He has only been in Ashburton House for a few weeks but to his surprise, he loves it.
The staff are extremely friendly and nothing is too much trouble.
He is enjoying the food and has started to regain some of the weight he lost
in the last few years.
I would recommend Ashburton House very strongly.
