I visited my niece in hospital in Aug 2025 weekly from London. She left on the 19/8/2025 and went to Sandmar. The manager said she had 6 weeks I saw her nearly every week if they knew I was coming she was always sitting up if they didn't know she was always in bed. She had no balance and fell on the
bed. Before 6 weeks was up I spoke to them they said she did not wash and couldn't go to her flat. I asked about the absence of grab rail and chair in bathroom. On my next visit she washed and changed clothes. A grab rail was in her bathroom I told them and the council she needed physio. The S/worker said she was going to her flat l said take her to find her lost phone. She said she can't walk and didn't know the way I suggested a wheeIchair she said she had an advocate I asked to be one. She got physio end of Nov. We complained to the council, they read it and said to go to the ombudsman we did. Sandmar locked me out for 2 weeks and spoke via a window. She can't balance after 8 months. No accountability/transparency.
Reply from Kylea Ellis, Registered Manager at SandmarWe are sorry concerns have been raised about care at Sandmar Care Home and take all feedback seriously. The resident has a regularly reviewed care plan developed with external professionals, including her occupational therapist, Community Psychiatric Nurse, and social worker. She is supported to mobilise, with encouragement aligned to her needs. Staff promote personal hygiene and clothing changes while respecting her independence; she has occasionally declined assistance, which must be respected. Her bathroom includes appropriate aids such as grab rails and a shower stool. Physiotherapy has been arranged in line with professional guidance and service availability. Regarding visits, she has stated a preference for pre-arranged visits. On occasions when her aunt arrived unannounced, consent was sought and she chose not to see her. This decision was respected. We do not block visits and always act in line with her wishes and wellbeing.
