Wytham House

from Alice K (Sister of Resident) published on 7 January 2026
Submitted via Website • Report
Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My sister was in hospital for over 4 months with complex care needs ,she was also diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and began to deteriorate rapidly. Then we found Wytham house the answer to our many searches and thanks to the deputy manager she was accepted in spite of her high level of need and
at times robust use of language.
The level of care is outstanding , every health professional involved with her treat her with kindness ,respect and humour and this extends to the other residents as well.
As all our family live some distance away we cannot visit very often , so it's very reassuring for us to know she is in safe hands.
She doesn't realise that she is in a beautiful and tranquil location ,so good for stressed visitors but she doesn't demand to go home anymore , I think she knows it's her forever home.
So thank you so much Wytham house.
Reply from Stuart Lamacraft, on behalf of the team at Wytham HouseThank you for sharing such a thoughtful and moving review. We're so pleased that your sister has found the care and understanding she needs at Wytham House, and that you feel reassured knowing she is safe and well supported despite the distance. Your kind words about the team's compassion and approach will mean a great deal to everyone involved in her care.

Mum has lived at Firtree for just over a year and a half now. I have lived abroad for some of this time during which the manager has been exceptional. Always keeping me informed on mum and any health issues she has had. My mum is extremely happy and contented, loves each day and so looks forward to
the activities - i cannot think of a more home from home than Firtree.

Everyone is very welcoming when you visit. Residents are really cared for and content. You can ask for anything and everyone is always happy to help. It's really lovely to see the residents engage in activities, they have singers visit the home, day trips etc.
Very caring and attentive staff.

My mother has been treated with such dignity, politeness, friendliness and a warm welcome not only for her but me and my wife too and our family. Getting to know the staff on the first floor and in reception we were most struck by the dedication and care to the residents. Gradually my mum was encouraged
to get involved in some of the activities but always at her own pace. Her wishes were always respected. Full respect and gratitude to all involved in her care. I couldn't recommend this care home more highly!

It was a very difficult decision to place my dear mum into Firtree House and I had always assured her this wouldn't happen, but sadly after my dad passed away last year her health deteriorated and wasn't safe for her to be at home. I am fairly pleased with her care, sadly she's not happy with her new
room as she has no bathroom and has to use a commode. I have spoken to staff about this but unfortunately at the moment there isn't a room available with a bathroom.
Reply from Stuart Lamacraft, on behalf of the team at Firtree House Nursing HomeThank you for taking the time to share your experience. We appreciate how difficult this decision must have been for you and understand your concerns about your mum's room and bathroom facilities in the original part of the house. Please be assured that the team will continue to support her with dignity and comfort. Your feedback is valued, and we're grateful for your trust during such a challenging time.

My mum has been a resident at Heffle Court for over three months now. Vlad and Julie went above and beyond to admit her urgently and were so helpful to me and my brother in dealing with the necessary paperwork and getting mum's belongings sorted out when she moved in. The home is exceptionally well
managed and run. The staff are all so kind, thoughtful and welcoming, and nothing is too much trouble for them. Every time I visit, they update me on how Mum is and what they are doing for her. They all work well together and are highly professional, while maintaining a relaxed and happy atmosphere.

Unfortunately during my nans short stay I found the whole setting very unpleasant. I found residents were just placed in chair and had no stimulation during the day or evidence of any activities. On several occasion whilst visiting I noticed care staff sitting around on their mobile phones and on social
media sites as witnessed whilst residents were left to it. On more than 2 occasions I found my relative saturated in urine which I can only describe as being stale due to the colour and smell as well as being sat in this in the communal area on a soaked chair around everyone. On another occasion she was found covers in faeces, she is vocal and can communicate her toilet needs. During her short stay I was contacted twice within a week saying she'd had falls when this hadn't occurred even at her own home that many times without 24/7 care. I wouldn't recommend unfortunately basic care needs and standards are not being met from our experience
Reply from Rowen Campbell, on behalf of the team at Gildawood CourtThank you for your feedback. We appreciate that sometimes seeing a relative in care can be very difficult for the family members. We have reviewed your comments and found that there is some differentiation with our records, starting from our initial assessment of your grandmother before she moved in on a short-term basis while waiting further assessment. We hope that she is doing well at home again with the care package agreed with her social worker. We would have been happy to discuss any concerns about your grandmother's care had they been raised at the time, and of course if you would like to discuss anything, please do get in touch with our home manager.

mum died at the end of November 2025 and Ivy court contributed to her death. She was on a special diet (puréed/ mince and moist later on) and the staff repeatedly gave her unsafe food. One occasion giving her a plate of ham sandwiches when she was supposed to be on liquid/purée food. Incident have ranged
from a physical slap (with bruises) to bullying by carers and being served cold food. Not being served food at all but entries made in carers notes food had been offered and just complete neglect including my mums bed/bedding smelling of urine.I tried so hard to get her out of this place but it was too late and the last incident which was the 6th/7th mum was cooked a dry cheese omelette which was not even safe with cheese which my mum choked on and was in critical care less than a week. Fluids were not thickened to the right level which also contributed and she died. I'm heartbroken please ignore the "good rating' . It had been in special measure for years!!! See previous CQC

My 85-year-old father, who has vascular dementia, has been living at Denham Manor Nursing Home since August. Thanks to the exceptional leadership team and dedicated staff, he settled in far more quickly than we ever expected.
From our very first visit, the home felt calm, cosy, and genuinely welcoming.
We can visit at any time, and every member of staff greets us warmly. There's a full programme of daily activities, along with seasonal events that residents can take part in and enjoy.
The team is professional, proactive, and truly committed to residents' wellbeing. They've built strong relationships with both residents and their families. The carers are consistently kind and compassionate, always taking the time to connect with my father, and the nurses respond promptly to any medical concerns.
Denham Manor feels warm and homely, and knowing he's in the right place gives me real peace of mind.

My mother received excellent care during her final months.

The carers were kind, patient and responsive and I had the impression that the care was tailored to her particular needs.

Unfortunately she was not up to taking part in many of the activities but I do know that she enjoyed the visits from

the school children as well as some of the celebrations Denham Manor organised to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

During spring and summer this year I was able to take my mother on walks in her wheelchair around the lovely grounds. The memory of those walks and some of the conversations we had will stay with me for ever. More importantly I believe they were appreciated by her and I hope made the challenges she faced more bearable.

Thank you to all the staff who looked after her

My mother was placed at Frethey House for just two weeks, unfortunately it was for Palliative care and my mother passed away peacefully and with dignity, in no pain or distress thanks to the wonderful care team.
Everyone is friendly, caring and compasionate and nothing is too much trouble. I would
go as far to say that I feel they took as much care of myself, my partner and some of my mothers close friends as they did for my mother the resident.
Towards the end of my mothers stay the nursing team ensured that all of the required medications were administered to ensure a smooth, peaceful and pain free journey. I cannot thank the entire team enough for the experience we had at Frethey House.
It is rated 'Good' for a reason, and that more than shines through from the very first moment you arrive until the time comes to depart.
If you require a respite, short or long term nursing home placement in the Taunton Deane area I highly recommend Frethey House.

From the warm welcome at reception on arrival to the thoughtful, personalised dressing of dad's room we were made to feel welcome. The nursing team of Charlotte, Maisie and Jenni have been caring and supportive, not only of dad but of the family during this transition. They have proactively sought ways
to help dad. All the staff from the carers, catering team and cleaners have worked hard at getting to know dad, his likes and dislikes, and have made him feel at home.
The events team have even adjusted their programme to accommodate dad's love of singing!
We are only a few weeks into dad's stay, but already know we have made the correct decision in homing dad at Brook House.

My own interaction with all staff has always been very pleasant & all are happy to help & deliver their service with a smile. This includes all phone calls & personal

interaction.

The home is clean & calm & all communal spaces are well maintained. My grandmothers private room is a good size with an en-suite bathroom & 2 windows looking out onto the grounds.
