Mum has been at Chestnut House for over a month now. Whilst we were concerned about mum going to a care home the wonderful team made the transition from hospital as easy as possible. They are caring and kind. They treat each resident individually and with respect. They have been tenacious in troubleshooting mums issues; finding space that works for her, offering ideas on eating and tempting her with different food to stimulate her appetite. They are on top of her medical matters and proactive in engaging professionals to support her.

The staff are lovely human beings individually and work as a great team creating a "home like" environment to benefit all residents.

So grateful to the manager and staff at Chestnut House. The care they provide is amazing. My dad has settled so well. Everyone's so calm and supportive with him and it really shows when I visit how happy he is.

Rooms are currently being decorated so hopefully after completion I could score a 5. Staff are so friendly, always around and always willing to support. Activities could be better although I know they are trying hard to provide activities groups of residents can enjoy. Mum does like having her nails done. Mum isn't always spotlessly clean, I know from staff they try to wash her daily but can't force her. Mum knows she should shower but says she is too tired to. She enjoys the food and chef does provide alternatives if needed. I am very content mum is safe, cared for and in the best place for her. There are several rooms and mum is free to go where she wants. As visitors me and my sister are made very welcome.

Lovely home and lovely staff always made welcome. Mum is a bit confused sometimes but calls the place home. The staff always have time to answer any questions and are always kind and caring to mum. The home is being spruced up at moment which is looking very smart. I have only good things to say about Chestnut House.

Dad spent just five months at Chestnut House prior to his sudden and unexpected death there in August 2024. Soon after Dad's admission our contact with him was curtailed due to an outright lie being told by a staff member about us. We were not given accurate reports from the care home as to Dad's rapid decline since his admission to their care, only after his death discovering that he had been barely eating or drinking, and it became clear Dad had been distressed for much of his time there. The home is understaffed and unclean as a contemporaneous review states. This is not a home we would have chosen for our dad, and we advise others to avoid this place. We would not place a dog in this home, never mind a loved one. We have taken up our concerns with the management of the home (and other organisations), but have not to date had an adequate response.

Reply from Moira Jones, Area Manager at Chestnut House

Your father was one of forty-one people who lived at Chestnut House during the period you refer to. All other forty families were happy with the care provided. Your visits to the home were curtailed due to a ruling by a court of law, that was outside of the home's circle of influence. This is why...

My mum was a resident at Bistre Nursing Home until she passed away recently. The care she received was wonderful and as a family this gave us such peace of mind. All staff are welcoming, friendly and compassionate, nothing was ever too much trouble.

Thank you Bistre Nursing Home

Review of Chestnut House from Elizabeth S (Daughter of Resident) published on 16 September 2024 Submitted via Website

I was so disappointed with the care at Chestnut House, I felt I had no choice but to take my mum from there. Despite being promised that there would be daily activities for the residents, there were none during the fortnight Mum was there. Yes there were boxes of jigsaws and Dominoes on shelves but I did not see staff get them out and engage with the residents (I went at various times of the day from early morning to later in the evening). In fact, I played Dominoes with one resident and he became much more animated. Ensuring residents have stimulation is as important as making sure they are clean and fed.
Cleanliness is also hit and miss. On a couple of occasions, there was a strong smell of urine in the home, including my mum's own room. I also had to ask for her hair to be washed as it was very greasy. I found communication poor e.g I was not informed of the outcome from the District Nurse's visit.

I have raised these issues with management and hopefully things will improve.

My uncle moved to Chestnut House a couple of months ago. Thankfully he has settled in well. The bedrooms are quite spacious with plenty of storage space. Windows have safety locks. Lovely staff who all engage with my uncle with respect and friendliness. Activities such as jigsaws, dominoes, and crafting are available. Also, they had pie and a pint last month. Nothing seems to be too much trouble, including arranging for my uncle to have an eye test there.

I feel very welcome when I visit Chestnut House, the home is warm and friendly, and we are all on first-name terms. The staff are always pleasant and accommodating. My husband is well fed, clean, and cared for, sometimes a little bored and sometimes not very happy.

If I could highlight anything it will be my husband's bedroom it's definitely dated and could do with a bit of upgrading.

Perfect experience - couldn’t be happier with how much support my aunt has received. We were very nervous about her going into the home, as we have always tried to care for her the best we can at home, but the staff have made not only her feel comfortable and supported - but us too. We appreciate everything the home has done for us, more than recommend to anyone looking for the best place for their loved one.
