The management and staff of Okeley have gone out of their way to request that the hospital transfer my father back to Okeley where he can spend his last days with his “family”. This latest gesture reinforces the wonderful support and caring that they have provided to both him and our family over the
last two years. I would have no hesitation in recommending Okeley Care Centre to any family looking for excellent care for a parent or family member with a diagnosis of dementia.
Reply from Shoenagh Mackay, Manager at Okeley Care HomeWe cant wait to have him back and give him the love and TLC he deserves.

My mother in law passed away on the evening of 7 December 2018 and the family were notified as soon as a crisis developed and we were looked after totally during the following hours at her bedside. We had all come to know the staff very well and this quality of care and understanding was no different
from what we experienced during the whole 18 months of her stay at Okeley. No matter when we visited we never once saw anything that gave us any cause for concern and it was due to their perseverance with feeding and drinking that gave her a real quality of life for much longer than we expected. The way they all came in after she passed away and said their goodbyes showed us that it was not just a job for them. Never once did we smell the typical urine smell so common in other homes we have been in contact within the past 5 years.
Reply from Shoenagh Mackay, Manager at Okeley Care HomeIt is an honour and a privilege to support and care for one our Residence in their final hours.
Many thanks for the kind words, I will pass this on to the team.

My wife has been resident at Okeley for the past three years and during this time I have always found the staff caring and attentive to her needs. I can understand the difficulties they have in understanding many of the resident's needs, but they are always cheerful and thoughtful in their treatment.
I would recommend this care home as one of the best.

I was worried about putting my lovely Dad into a care home but the care staff were excellent with my Dad encouraging him to eat his meals, washing him. The staff were always very friendly to us, his family, and we enjoyed going there to see him. But, he became very poorly and was taken to hospital.
He didn't want to go but sadly passed away. We will never forget the lovely staff there.

Since my mother came to live at Okeley on the dementia unit the whole family have nothing but praise. My mother is extremely well cared for by staff who work to a very high standard. She has been settled and very happy there for the last 18 months. Thank you so much.

My mother went to Okeley from hospital in April 2017 and she was so poorly we did not think she would see her 88th birthday in May. Not only did she have a wonderful day with family and friends but she did so well because the care and carers have been amazing. The staff at Okeley are a credit to the
care system.

I have very little experience of care homes but I would not have wished for a better place for my mother to spend her last days. The premises were very comfortable and the staff helpful, considerate, courteous and sympathetic. I can not rate it too highly, Okeley Care Centre.

Mum spent 6 years in the care of Okeley Chelmsford. The best possible care and compassion was shown to mum and was very reassuring to us as a family. The building itself is ideal for people with Alzheimers/Dementia who like to wonder.

The activities provided to the clients were also suitable to

their needs. The cleanliness was excellent. If we raised concerns it was taken onboard but this was a rare occasion.

In all the 3 1/2 years that you have cared for my wife, I have never had any anxieties - you have always demonstrated deep love in all circumstances. The food was always good and presentation always considerate, with no undue pressure. Bed linen was constantly clean - as were the toilet facilities and
personal care. I know that my wife made many friends, often due to her knitting

This is the first care home that ticked all the boxes for respite care for my mother. Immediately, I could see it was clean, welcoming and organised but I was so pleased to see how caring and happy the staff were when dealing with the residents and service users. My mother has memory problems but she
always shows if she is unhappy but she was perfectly content at this home and will be returning for further excellent care. Respite care is excellent.

Although it's an incredibly difficult time for all the family, having had to eventually admit my wife's father to a care home, we have found the facilities and staff at Okeley warm and welcoming. Dad has settled in quite quickly and had the full attention and experience of the fantastic carers. We would
not hesitate to recommend Okeley to others.

I felt very sad moving dad to a care home but I know I have made the right choice.
The home is very welcoming. The staff are amazing and dad has settled quite well.
Management and staff are always helpful, very reassuring and always there to answer questions. They also keep you up to date with his
needs, meds etc. I would definitely recommend this home it is outstanding.

My Mother went for 2 weeks respite. She very much liked the staff and the building in general. What let this place down is lack of activities and encouragement to get the residents up and motivated unlike other homes. There were no activities in the two weeks my mother was there except for local
children coming in to sing one afternoon. Management came up with excuses about staff being on holiday or ill. We asked how do we connect to wifi as my mother uses an iPod and iPad to keep up to date with family on social networking. Management look at me in disbelief that an elderly person would need wifi. Informed there was no wifi! I find that appalling in this day and age.
In general I feel that the care is very good but has a very zombie feel as resident are not even encouraged to get out of bed, making it a lonely place for many. Fortunately family would go visit and take my mother out for some interaction and sanity.
This home could be excellent if the mind was cared for too.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.744)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.744) out of 10 for Okeley Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 46 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 45 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.744 for Okeley Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (425 Excellents x 5) + (106 Goods x 4) + (14 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 547 Ratings = 4.744
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Okeley Care Home is based on 45 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 84 registered maximum number of service users is 16.8, which has been reached with 45 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2020

I joined Excelcare in 2016 after having been with my previous care provider for 16 years and wanting to develop my career further. I started at Sweyne Court in Rayleigh where I stayed for four years. Then in 2020, the Home Manager role became available at Okeley, and I was ready for the new challenge whilst staying with Excelcare, where I love working. It was the perfect opportunity.

I enjoy making people happy and comfortable and creating
memorable moments that the people living with us can enjoy and reminisce about. It is so wonderful seeing people previously isolated become social butterflies and make new friends.

The team are kind, caring and compassionate and puts the people living at Okeley first. They are keen and willing to learn, and I hear many positive comments about them from the residents and their loved ones. I am so proud to be part of the Okeley family
