I would like to post this review to warn people about this terrible place. My Dad was a resident here for a period of 5 months during which time he declined significantly. The lack of care by staff that were totally lacking compassion and skill to care for the elderly. My Dad lost so much weight because
of a lack of nourishment due to the fact he was offered such a poor variety of diet. He had a fall, which was not recorded on his notes. They did call and tell us, and assured us that he was fine. When my sister arrived later that day and asked if they had checked him over from head to toe and was assured that this had been done. She then asked if they would check again, which they did and reassured her that he was fine. Later that afternoon my Dad was having a rest on the bed and got quite hot. My sister removed his cardigan to reveal that he had an open wound which was too obvious to miss. This is just one occasion there were too many more to mention. Other residents walk around aimlessly!
Reply from Shan Visram, Director at Brookvale HouseWe are disappointed to read that you have had a negative experience and have been frustrated with the level of service received at our Care Home.

My understanding is that several meetings took place between our Manager and the family to address any concerns over the care provided.
We do have a complaints policy in place, and your concerns could have been brought to the attention of the Directors who would have actively worked with you to resolve them.

We would like to state that we do strive to provide an outstanding quality of care and improve our service user's experience wherever possible.
We are very sorry that you feel the experience did not meet your expectations and as part of our continual learning and improvement policy, we will conduct a full review in our practices and procedures and address any shortfalls that are identified.

After making the sad decision to move Mum into care, we couldn’t be more happy with Brookvale House. Mum is a wanderer and likes to constantly pack her things to go “home” however the staff are very in tune with this and help her realise she is now home.
The lovely carers are so kind and considerate
and keep us informed of everything that happens.
Pansy, with her bubbly enthusiasm, arranges lots of activities and we get monthly emails of all that is happening.
Mum seems content and settled now and we know it is the right place for her.
Overall it’s a relief for us that Mum is so well cared for and we can enjoy visiting, knowing she is calmer and safe

The care for my dad is good. I think it has taken all of us to settle him being in care. He seems happy. The staff are very hard-working and do anything to assist. I am still worried about Dad's weight and the fact that he has lost quite a lot of weight. I think sometimes he leaves his food because
it becomes cold so he won't eat it His other care is good. Overall experience rate satisfactory.

Mum was living isolated and alone, not eating well and beginning to wander. Her dementia was getting worse and Brookvale was recommended. She was immediately made welcome and at home. She began using a scooter for the first time, improving her mobility. With regular meals, her appetite returned and
she enjoyed the social setting for meals. Interacting regularly with others her age improved her speech and interest in participating socially. The care staff and entertainment coordinator are very attentive and encouraging and the home is well managed and run.
Reply from Fatemah Bhanji, Business Development Executive at Brookvale HouseThank you for your review. I think this is an amazing home. There is so much room for Dad to move about. There are lots of activities to join in with if he wants or quiet places to go if not. The garden is lovely it's so once to have an outside space to sit in. I love the way that I don't have to make an appointment to come in,
so I can come in whenever I want. Dad is so well looked after and has access to a dentist, hairdresser and podiatrist.

Brookvale House is a great find. The residents are obviously cared for and by a devoted team of delightful mixed personalities. Entertainment is clearly recognised as key here, an enormous task driven by a formidable personality, confident and well-planned. There are always going to be issues to address,
bibs at meal times would save on laundry and residents' clothing and lessen the shock to afternoon visitors. Wiping tables. More thought/training on blind care, especially socially. Maybe a buddy system for them might help, another resident perhaps.

Cannot thank you all enough for the care given to my husband. He always looked very well cared for and was content. All the staff were helpful, friendly and polite. There was a very good atmosphere and full marks for the security. I cannot comment on activities as he could not participate but I did
see other residents happily doing so. I would definitely recommend Brookvale House as an excellent care home.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.711)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.711) out of 10 for Brookvale House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 33 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.711 for Brookvale House is calculated as follows: ( (285 Excellents x 5) + (104 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 394 Ratings = 4.711
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brookvale House is based on 33 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 35 registered maximum number of service users is 7, which has been reached with 33 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
