My elderly friend (90+) reached a point whereby he could no longer care for himself at home and he decided to move and take up residence in a Rest Home. Not an easy decision to make for many people. The Shaftesbury Rest Home (SO17 1SE) was recommended by local caring agencies and, after a short exploratory
stay, he had no doubts about moving in. He settled down very quickly and I was pleased when he told me, on numerous occasions, that "I've made the right decision - both by moving out of my home and by choosing this place". The Shaftesbury Rest Home transformed the quality of his life. Help with daily care. A comfortable bed in a very pleasant single room, with assistance readily available. A clean and tidy place to live. Great and plentiful food and, importantly, good company. The staff and managers are friendly, hard working and professional. The Shaftesbury Rest Home is a very nice place - thoroughly recommended.

My wife has Alzheimer's and has been a resident for one year.
Moving a loved one into care is never easy, the manager and staff at Shaftesbury made it as painless as it could be, and after one full year, I can say that I am so glad she is there.
She often tells me the staff are lovely (she sometimes
thinks she works there) and the food is good. I am always made to feel welcome. I would not want her to be anywhere else!

The care my Mum-in-law receives is excellent from the very professional and attentive staff. The staff are always willing to go the extra mile, including helping her send greetings cards and arrange video calls to our family in Australia. Although she is a fussy eater, she enjoys her food at the home
very much. The staff make sure that her medication and the other requirements of her GP, and other medical specialists, are complied with completely - which is such a comfort for us compared to when she was living alone, as is the company of the other residents and staff.

Since my daughter and I settled Grandmother into Shaftesbury Rest Home, she has been lovingly cared for and cherished. The care she received prior to her recent death at the grand age of (almost) 99 has been exemplary. Nothing has been too much trouble, and every member of staff under the matron was
well trained. The food was home-cooked and very well received by the residents.
This is a small imitate rest home, and we have no reason not to highly recommend it to others.
I personally have had family members in extremely expensive, high-end care homes, and they could not compete with Shaftesbury Rest Home for care, kindness and compassion.
Both Grandmother and the staff of Shaftesbury Rest Home will be missed.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.076)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.076) out of 10 for Shaftesbury Rest Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.944 for Shaftesbury Rest Home is calculated as follows: ( (34 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 4.944

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.132 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Shaftesbury Rest Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 17 registered maximum number of service users is 3.4. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 3.4 = 0.882

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
