My aunt settled in easily due to sympathetic staff. She has dementia which staff handle well. Activities are daily and inclusive, in a relaxed atmosphere. She is always clean, clothes washed. Room is kept clean and smells nice too. She likes the food which is cut up for her. I am always welcome when i visit and receive an update on how she is doing.

Moved our mum here from a previous home where her needs had not been met.
She arrived in a very bad state and couldn't even hold her head up due to the neglect of previous place let alone hold a conversation but settled very quickly and within weeks due to the care she recieved she was back to how she'd been before we placed her in the previous home.
The home is well run and the manager takes pride in his residents comfort, safety and happiness.
Residents free to roam about and not confined to one area. Staff friendly and approachable.
Our mum was treated with kindness and loved joking with staff.
Always updated on our mums care and she was always happy when we visited.

They've become like family for us

My husband and I visited Deerswood Lodge on the 8th of June, the visit was with my mother who is a resident. We were greeted with friendly faced staff who enjoyed meeting our dog, the staff had time to say hello and asked who we had come to see. We signed the visitor's book and proceeded to Mums room, we noticed that the carpets on the stairs were in the process of being cleaned and looked fresh, infact all areas looked clean & tidy & welcoming. We entered Mums room & she was delighted to see us. We travel from Cornwall to see Mum and it was lovely to see her looking so well and happy. Mums room was clean and fresh and she had everything she needed at arms length. Mum said she was happy living there and the carers were really nice which is lovely to hear. Whilst we were with Mum several staff popped by including a nurse to ask mum how she was today. We also were made a cup of tea which was most welcome. A member of staff also help me find a vase for the flowers I brought for Mum.

Deerswood Lodge is honestly the very best care home for my father.

It was heart breaking to have to send him to a home but in reality it's the very best place for him.

All the staff are impeccably trained professionals who show genuine care to all the residents.

They have gone beyond the boundaries of what would be required and I am truly grateful for their care and dedication

My mother has been at Deerswood Lodge for one week after a stay in hospital following several falls and unable to cope at home. I feel compelled to write this review so soon into her stay because I am blown away by the kindness of every member of staff no matter their role. Mum has been made to feel so welcome by everyone. I am a specialist hospital nurse of 35 years so I know good care and I was so anxious about mum moving away from home as was she. I could not feel more reassured about leaving mum in their wonderfully kind, capable and caring hands. Her room and the whole home is spotless and so well equipped. The food and menu choices are incredible , beautifully presented and so much attention is taken by the carers to make sure mum has exactly what she would like to eat . I love visiting , there is always something going on, music playing , laughter and chat, the residents have total freedom of the home. It is such a fabulous place .

Deerswood Care Home has been such a home to my grandad. The staff are so amazing, kind and caring. I truly believe if my grandad was not in this home with kind staff my grandad would not be here. This home has given him a new lease of life, he has been through so much with his health, but with the fantastic staff taking care of him, I know he will be ok. Thank you Deerswood.

Once again Deerswood Lodge have been excellent in looking after my stepfather who has been very poorly over the last month. All staff go above and beyond to look after him, I can only say if it wasn't for their devoted care, he wouldn't be here now. The home is spotlessly clean, entertainment amazing, and I enjoy my visits there with my daughter as we enjoy our chats with the residents.

My sister came to Deerswood Lodge directly from hospital in December. I was naturally concerned about this move as she was a very independent lady, but had had several falls and was increasingly unable to care for herself. As I lived at some distance away, I was not told or consulted of this move until later. However on visiting her at the home and meeting the staff who cared for her I was so happy knowing that she was being cared for so well. Sadly she was only there for a short period as she passed away unexpectedly in April. I would like to thank everyone I met there for her care and for the welcome and support I received by them all who were always available via the telephone for any updates. This is a truly lovely place.
My sincere thanks to all.

My Mother in law has been in Deerswood Lodge Cedar unit for many years her care is kind and considerate, today I observed both Danielle & Lucy being very kind , caring and sensitive to the needs of Ann who has advanced Alzheimer's. Kindness, Care and safety when one is unable to communicate there needs is the most important quality and responsibility required and these two care assistants were exceptional caring and today put my mind at ease by realising Ann was best suited to bed rest and being made comfortable.please acknowledge there professionalism !!

My mum moved here a few months ago, previously being in a private Care Home for 2 years.
We were really worried that the move would have a negative effect on her Dementia, infact the opposite has happened, Mum is settled very quickly, she is happy & content, enjoys the activities, loves having her own bathroom, cannot praise her carers enough.

My sister & I are extremly happy with the care given

The Entertainments guy Michael was today gently leading one of the residents , I think her name is Joan by her hand around the ground floor EMI unit and gardens talking and being a kind friend , he has lots of patience is always smiling and is great at entertaining and putting on a great show and sing sling which the advanced Demrntia residents noticeably enjoy , keep up the entertainments more and some Pet therapy and visits would be good . The majority of the staff on the Dementia ground floor are patient and take time with their residents

My mum, Ann, moved in to Deerswood in early summer 2024.
At the time, she was depressed, anxious, and angry about her lot in life. She had just spent 3 months in another care home and the experience wasn't a happy one.
She was hesitant to say the least to move to Deerswood, which was further away from her home in Hassocks.
Fast forward nearly 18 months and my mum is a changed person. She is about as content and settled as she has been in over a decade. Along with a change in her medication, this positive change in her has been down to the supportive, welcoming and calm environment at Deerswood.
I honestly couldn't be happier with the care and attention that my mum receives from every member of staff at Deerwood. It really is a joyous place, and I am always greeted with a smile and a hello by everybody whenever I visit. My mum has found a community and "her tribe" at Deerswood, and it has transformed her outlook on life.

I would thoroughly recommend Deerswood to anybody.

My mum has been a full-time resident at Deerswood Lodge for over a year now. During this time we have found the staff and management to be kind and supportive. They keep us informed of any changes to her health and personal needs.
We are always made to feel welcome and it's lovely to see the familiar friendly faces, who work very hard to help mum with her care, it is truly appreciated. Mum enjoys sitting in the lounge with the company of the other residents. Her appetite has really improved with the lovely meals, snacks and cups of teas.
The staff really did an amazing job putting on another wonderful summer party this year, we all really enjoyed the tea and cakes and wheelbarrow flower displays. Mum particularly enjoyed the local choir, they were Brilliant!

Thanks again for all that you do.

Wan Illman
Wan IllmanJob Title:Service ManagerJoined: 2008

The most rewarding part of my job is enriching the lives of those who live here and being a part of their family; making special memories with residents and their families; marking special occasions and celebrating milestones.

My colleagues at Shaw have been nothing but supportive and shown a great deal of encouragement throughout my career progression. There is always further training available if you wish to and I highly recommend Shaw to anyone looking for a career in care with opportunities to progress to various roles.

In 2008 Wan Joined Mill River Lodge in Horsham as a team leader (previously working as a support worker for another company) with hours to suit around her family.

Wan moved to Hillside Lodge in Pulborough and was appointed deputy manager to cover maternity leave. In 2016, Wan moved to Burleys Wood in Crawley as acting manager. She applied for the post permanently and was successful. Was took time off to have a baby and once her maternity leave finished she started as manager at Deerswood Lodge in 2019.

During her time at Shaw, Wan has achieved her QCF level 5 in Leadership for health and social care in adults, embracing the journey of living with dementia, Coaching and Mentoring as well as level 4 Safeguarding for Leaders.

Wan has twice won a National Shaw Star award for Outstanding management contribution and she was also recently featured as ‘Manager of the Month’ in a trade publication, Care Home Professional.

Jackie Monk
Jackie MonkJob Title:Unit ManagerJoined: 2005

Jackie joined Shaw when they took over from West Sussex in 2005 and was part of the team that moved into a brand new purpose-built care home in Horsham. Jackie started working in care in 1993 as a support worker initially because it fitted around her child care needs but it must have been a good choice because 30 years on she is still in the care industry. Jackie was promoted to Team leader and has worked in several of the Shaw homes within the region taking on various roles such as being seconded to Deputy Manager. Jackie managed a busy and thriving day centre at Forest View in Burgess Hill enriching the lives of elderly people who were living with Dementia. The daycare service was a lifeline to many who lived alone in the community. Sadly the Day Centre closed during the Pandemic. Jackie was asked if she would like to take the role of Unit Manager at Deerswood Lodge. Jackie is now the unit manager on the residential floor.

Jackie has always enjoyed whatever role she has been asked to do but being the Unit Manager at Deerswood is by far the most enjoyable and rewarding despite the many challenges this role can bring. Jackie loves being able to make a difference in people's lives and helping them transition from living in the community to coming into care. Jackie also enjoys building relationships with residents' families and friends she finds this an important part of the role as they are entrusting their loved ones' care to us.

Jackie said “ I am proud to work for Shaw Healthcare and feel valued as an employee and I am proud to be a part of the Deerswood Team and the lovely feedback we receive from the residents and their families as we strive to provide a home from home environment for all of our residents.
