Although I was only staying for a few days I was very impressed by the whole place, clean, bright, cheerful, friendly staff couldn't do enough for residents, always cheerful, respectful at all times.

If the Care Quality Commission gave out gold stars, Deerswood would win shed loads. Well done, keep up the good work.

The staff are really lovely to my husband. They look after him, feed him and wash him. I wouldn't want my husband to be anywhere else.

The home is warm and friendly and makes me and our children welcome.

While my mother was in the care of the staff at Deerswood, she was treated with great kindness. Their care for her and the concern they showed for her made me profoundly thankful that she was in their hands.

My mother moved to Deerswood Lodge 4 months ago. I had visited several homes in the Horsham, Crawley area and Deerswood Lodge was the first home that I felt very comfortable with. The staff, admin and caring were very friendly and that was the reason I chose Deerswood Lodge. Everyone speaks to us on our visits and it's a very friendly and caring place. My mother is very happy and well cared for by all the dedicated staff. I would recommend Deerswood Lodge to anybody looking for a home for a loved one.

My wife has been at this care home for just over a year. In that time there were problems settling in but I guess this is quite normal. She has had a couple of setbacks. These have been dealt with. The care and professionalism, the staff and are excellent and very caring. I would not hesitate to recommend this home.

This is a good care home given the amount of funding at its disposal. The regular staff are kind, compassionate and do their best for residents. The activities are frequent and varied which helps keep residents entertained and engaged. Plenty of music mornings and crafts, bingo and quizzes. The residents would definitely benefit from more permanent staff as there are occasions, particularly in the mornings, when an extra pair of hands would be useful, but I don't believe residents safety is compromised. Some residents and particularly those with Dementia find Agency staff unsettling as they are unfamiliar to them and generally less knowledgeable regarding the individual needs, but due to staffing numbers, it seems their use is unavoidable. All in all, I feel happy that Mum is safe, well fed and well cared for at Deerswood Lodge.

I booked my mother into Deerswood Lodge for 1 week's respite. In spite of queries raised over the agreed cost, the cost was honoured by the Shaw admin team, and my mother had a very enjoyable stay. Mother reported the staff were very kind and friendly, also the food was of a good standard. When I visited Mother, I also experienced friendly and efficient staff.

When considering more permanent long-term care, I would certainly consider Deerswood for my mother.

I am impressed with the attitude of this home. The staff are friendly, they are attentive and keep a check on all patients. The home is bright and airy, the staff are well trained, the patients are allowed to go where they want inside the building and the grounds, they are taken out regularly on shopping trips and outings. The rooms are a good size with bright decor.

Wan Illman
Wan IllmanJob Title:Service ManagerJoined: 2008

The most rewarding part of my job is enriching the lives of those who live here and being a part of their family; making special memories with residents and their families; marking special occasions and celebrating milestones.

My colleagues at Shaw have been nothing but supportive and shown a great deal of encouragement throughout my career progression. There is always further training available if you wish to and I highly recommend Shaw to anyone looking for a career in care with opportunities to progress to various roles.

In 2008 Wan Joined Mill River Lodge in Horsham as a team leader (previously working as a support worker for another company) with hours to suit around her family.

Wan moved to Hillside Lodge in Pulborough and was appointed deputy manager to cover maternity leave. In 2016, Wan moved to Burleys Wood in Crawley as acting manager. She applied for the post permanently and was successful. Was took time off to have a baby and once her maternity leave finished she started as manager at Deerswood Lodge in 2019.

During her time at Shaw, Wan has achieved her QCF level 5 in Leadership for health and social care in adults, embracing the journey of living with dementia, Coaching and Mentoring as well as level 4 Safeguarding for Leaders.

Wan has twice won a National Shaw Star award for Outstanding management contribution and she was also recently featured as ‘Manager of the Month’ in a trade publication, Care Home Professional.

Jackie Monk
Jackie MonkJob Title:Unit ManagerJoined: 2005

Jackie joined Shaw when they took over from West Sussex in 2005 and was part of the team that moved into a brand new purpose-built care home in Horsham. Jackie started working in care in 1993 as a support worker initially because it fitted around her child care needs but it must have been a good choice because 30 years on she is still in the care industry. Jackie was promoted to Team leader and has worked in several of the Shaw homes within the region taking on various roles such as being seconded to Deputy Manager. Jackie managed a busy and thriving day centre at Forest View in Burgess Hill enriching the lives of elderly people who were living with Dementia. The daycare service was a lifeline to many who lived alone in the community. Sadly the Day Centre closed during the Pandemic. Jackie was asked if she would like to take the role of Unit Manager at Deerswood Lodge. Jackie is now the unit manager on the residential floor.

Jackie has always enjoyed whatever role she has been asked to do but being the Unit Manager at Deerswood is by far the most enjoyable and rewarding despite the many challenges this role can bring. Jackie loves being able to make a difference in people's lives and helping them transition from living in the community to coming into care. Jackie also enjoys building relationships with residents' families and friends she finds this an important part of the role as they are entrusting their loved ones' care to us.

Jackie said “ I am proud to work for Shaw Healthcare and feel valued as an employee and I am proud to be a part of the Deerswood Team and the lovely feedback we receive from the residents and their families as we strive to provide a home from home environment for all of our residents.

His professional background in sales, where he held managerial roles, later applied to the healthcare industry. In 2019, after demonstrating his adaptability and commitment to Deerswood Lodge, Bob’s dedication and leadership qualities were recognised when he was promoted to the position of Team Leader. Also, in the same year, he completed the training to become a manual handling instructor.

Bob expresses his passion for his work, emphasising the dynamic environment he encounters daily. The variety of situations he faces every shift keeps him engaged and motivated to make a positive impact in the life of those he cares for.
