My mother has been a resident for just over a year and settled in very well, unfortunately she had a fall in September coming out of her room, which required hospitalisation and repair of a fracture. The staff were marvellous at keeping my mother comfortable whilst waiting for an ambulance and notified
me immediately. My mother was sent back to Deerswood within two weeks with little notice and no support from the hospital regarding her discharge. I can honestly say the staff have pulled out all the stops to ensure she receives excellent care showing empathy, compassion and individualised care. My mother is no longer mobile so requires additional support through no fault of the home. We as a family are so appreciative for all the care the team provide. I would highly recommend Deerswood as it’s such a lovely home.

My mother has been a resident at Deerswood Lodge Care Home for over 18 months. During this time her care has been consistently very good and as a family we have all felt very supported.
The food always looks very tasty and varied. The carers, team leaders and management are all very approachable and
empathetic.
I have no hesitation in recommending Deerswood Lodge.

I have been a resident in Deerswood Lodge for 4 years and I am writing this review to say that I spent Christmas here and to tell you that the management put a beautiful spread on. The Christmas Dinner was excellent and all the staff joined in with all the festivities they really made my Christmas like
I was with my family they really excelled in treating us like one big family. I cannot express my gratitude to all of them. I would also like to express my thanks to the management for our residents and staff party on Wednesday 20th December, again they put on a fantastic spread and made it feel like a family gathering. A very big thank you for all the hard work you all have done.

I cannot recommend Deerswood Lodge highly enough. The care provided to my father by the staff is excellent, from his personal hygiene to his dietary requirements. I am also regularly consulted and kept informed about my father's condition in general. The rooms are also very pleasant, bright and well
maintained.

Mum came to Deerswood in September 2022. It was a huge change for her and a hard decision if the family were taking the right step for her future needs with dementia care.
Absolutely the right decision. Deerswood Lodge offers so much and Mum loves all the activities. It's so good that she has people
around her and amazing caring staff, and that she can also have her own quiet space if she feels like that too.
The care aspect is well documented and she can see the doctor or dentist on their regular rounds if needed.
With the hairdresser and her nails being maintained on a regular basis, this helps her to feel good about her appearance.
Mum loves the garden and the Thursday club and tells me everyone is so nice.
I don't think she ever stops dancing and singing now whenever she hears the music.
It's the best thing to see her smiling and laughing.
Thank you to all the staff that care for Mum. Thank you Deerswood.

My mother is a resident in Deerswood Lodge and is so well looked after. The care she receives is excellent and always given with care while maintaining her dignity. It’s great that the staff have got to know her so well and ensure her needs are met. The management team keep relatives updated with regular
meetings and emails and are always looking for new ways to provide a home-from-home environment, entertainment and activities for the residents. Overall I can’t recommend them enough. Thank you all at Deerswood for making my mum feel so safe, secure and cared for.

Since moving into Deerswood Lodge, my mother has received excellent care from the team. I have been kept well informed of her well-being at all times and know that she is looked after and cared for. My mother has experienced a downturn in her health and the team have gone above and beyond to ensure

Mum was very poorly with suspected infections. Deerswood staff and Team Leaders on the first floor were outstanding. So caring and genuinely worried about her. Sadly the home was severely let down by the doctor's practice. The staff have so much to do they don't have the time to chase doctors several
times a day. Luckily we finally got Mum the hospital care she needed and she's back home at Deerswood with her friends and the amazing staff! It's such a fabulous home, we feel so lucky she is in this one safe and being very well cared for.

I'd like to emphasise that I am glad that many relatives have found this home to be caring and safe.
However, I cannot endorse this view.
I do strongly believe that the carers themselves (and the admin team) are great and do the best they can under difficult circumstances.
I cannot elaborate, but
I would never allow my beloved late mother to stay at this home if I could turn back time.
Reply from Management Team, Shaw healthcare at Deerswood LodgeWe're sorry to hear you feel that way. Your mother was highly regarded by everyone who cared for her at Deerswood Lodge. We were pleased to hear from her that she felt the same mutual respect towards us during her stay, before moving to another care home. We offer our sincerest condolences to you and your family.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.867)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.867) out of 10 for Deerswood Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 41 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.867 for Deerswood Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (431 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 489 Ratings = 4.867
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Deerswood Lodge is based on 41 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 90 registered maximum number of service users is 18, which has been reached with 41 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Wan Illman

Job Title: Service Manager Joined: 2008

The most rewarding part of my job is enriching the lives of those who live here and being a part of their family; making special memories with residents and their families; marking special occasions and celebrating milestones.

My colleagues at Shaw have been nothing but supportive and shown a great deal of encouragement throughout my career progression. There is always further training available if you wish to and I highly recommend Shaw to anyone looking for a career in care with opportunities to progress to various roles.

In 2008 Wan Joined Mill River Lodge in Horsham as a team leader (previously working as a support worker for another company) with hours to suit around her family.

Wan moved to Hillside Lodge in Pulborough and was appointed deputy manager to cover maternity leave. In 2016, Wan moved to Burleys Wood in Crawley as acting manager. She applied for the post permanently and was successful. Was took time off to have a baby and once her maternity leave finished she started as manager at Deerswood Lodge in 2019.

During her time at Shaw, Wan has achieved her QCF level 5 in Leadership for health and social care in adults, embracing the journey of living with dementia, Coaching and Mentoring as well as level 4 Safeguarding for Leaders.

Wan has twice won a National Shaw Star award for Outstanding management contribution and she was also recently featured as ‘Manager of the Month’ in a trade publication, Care Home Professional.

Jackie Monk

Job Title: Unit Manager Joined: 2005

Jackie joined Shaw when they took over from West Sussex in 2005 and was part of the team that moved into a brand new purpose-built care home in Horsham. Jackie started working in care in 1993 as a support worker initially because it fitted around her child care needs but it must have been a good choice because 30 years on she is still in the care industry. Jackie was promoted to Team leader and has worked in several of the Shaw homes within the region taking on various roles such as being seconded to Deputy Manager. Jackie managed a busy and thriving day centre at Forest View in Burgess Hill enriching the lives of elderly people who were living with Dementia. The daycare service was a lifeline to many who lived alone in the community. Sadly the Day Centre closed during the Pandemic. Jackie was asked if she would like to take the role of Unit Manager at Deerswood Lodge. Jackie is now the unit manager on the residential floor.

Jackie has always enjoyed whatever role she has been asked to do but being the Unit Manager at Deerswood is by far the most enjoyable and rewarding despite the many challenges this role can bring. Jackie loves being able to make a difference in people's lives and helping them transition from living in the community to coming into care. Jackie also enjoys building relationships with residents' families and friends she finds this an important part of the role as they are entrusting their loved ones' care to us.

Jackie said “ I am proud to work for Shaw Healthcare and feel valued as an employee and I am proud to be a part of the Deerswood Team and the lovely feedback we receive from the residents and their families as we strive to provide a home from home environment for all of our residents.
