My mother is a resident in Deerswood Lodge and is so well looked after. The care she receives is excellent and always given with care while maintaining her dignity. It’s great that the staff have got to know her so well and ensure her needs are met. The management team keep relatives updated with regular meetings and emails and are always looking for new ways to provide a home-from-home environment, entertainment and activities for the residents. Overall I can’t recommend them enough. Thank you all at Deerswood for making my mum feel so safe, secure and cared for.

Care staff have been excellent, both with the care they have provided and with communication. They have proved to be efficient when further intervention from other services was required (GP, ambulance, etc.), and I have personally witnessed the kindness the staff show to all residents.

Since moving into Deerswood Lodge, my mother has received excellent care from the team. I have been kept well informed of her well-being at all times and know that she is looked after and cared for. My mother has experienced a downturn in her health and the team have gone above and beyond to ensure that she can remain happy and safe within the home. She loves living at Deerswood and would fully recommend this lovely care home.

Mum was very poorly with suspected infections. Deerswood staff and Team Leaders on the first floor were outstanding. So caring and genuinely worried about her. Sadly the home was severely let down by the doctor's practice. The staff have so much to do they don't have the time to chase doctors several times a day. Luckily we finally got Mum the hospital care she needed and she's back home at Deerswood with her friends and the amazing staff! It's such a fabulous home, we feel so lucky she is in this one safe and being very well cared for.

I'd like to emphasise that I am glad that many relatives have found this home to be caring and safe.
However, I cannot endorse this view.
I do strongly believe that the carers themselves (and the admin team) are great and do the best they can under difficult circumstances.

I cannot elaborate, but I would never allow my beloved late mother to stay at this home if I could turn back time.

Reply from Management Team, Shaw healthcare at Deerswood Lodge

We're sorry to hear you feel that way. Your mother was highly regarded by everyone who cared for her at Deerswood Lodge. We were pleased to hear from her that she felt the same mutual respect towards us during her stay, before moving to another care home. We offer our sincerest condolences to you and your family.

My Mother-in-Law was a resident between January 2022 and December 2022 she had been suffering from Dementia. I should just like to take the opportunity to place on record our family's thanks for the care and kindness shown to her at the most vulnerable time of her life. The staff were always there for her and us as a family with phone calls and a little chat whilst we were visiting. Due to her great age and ongoing medical problems, she was taken ill and this proved to not be survivable, even in her final hours all the right decisions were taken by the staff and we were kept informed of events. So thank you to all the team at Deerswood Lodge, you all do an amazing job and we will always remember her time there as a safe and caring place.

From the start of March/April 2021 until Mum's passing in November 2022, the care home has been exceptional in looking after our mum with dignity, respect, love and kindness. Everyone on the caregiving team from the most senior manager to the tea person has excelled above and beyond with their service in looking after our mum. Thank you!

My mum who recently passed away in hospital spent eighteen months living at Deerswood Lodge Care Home.
Mum was admitted under Covid funding to Deerswood Lodge from hospital. My mum was so happy at Deerswood Lodge that we asked if she could stay there as a permanent resident.
We always found the home spotlessly clean and most importantly the carers were amazing with Mum.
Mum was always clean and tidy, most of all happy and wanted to spend the rest of her life at Deerswood Lodge.

Thanks to everyone who looked after my mum.

I won't give a mark to management due to the fact that no one from management had the respect or decency to express condolences to my wife on the recent death of her mother. When we cleared my wife's mother's room many of the staff expressed their sorrow but no one from management could be bothered to make an appearance to say anything. A real let down we feel.

My mother-in-law has lived at Deerswood Lodge for just over a year and as a family, we know we made the right decision in choosing this care home. My mother-in-law has been made so welcome; she is safe, happy and well cared for. She is never in her room when we call because she is constantly included in all the activities. When we visit it is very clear that the staff are very caring and go above and beyond, for that we will always be grateful.

As a volunteer helping the manager and staff to develop new facilities and activities, I worked closely with carers and residents. I also have experience both as a volunteer and a relative of a resident in other care homes. I have found the environment and staff in Deerswood to be exceptional. Several new facilities have been developed to enhance the experience for residents and relatives alike. This year, the home has held several events and the team make them all a wonderful experience, the food is always top rate. A very important thing to me is access to the outdoors and Deerswood is working hard to develop opportunities for this.

Deerswood held a Jubilee street party for all of the residents and invited friends and family. They were so helpful and got everyone out to celebrate. My nan loved it and got to celebrate with the ones she loves alongside other residents. We had scones, jam and cream, as well as cold drinks and lots of other food. Thank you Deerswood for letting us celebrate!

Wan Illman
Wan IllmanJob Title:Service ManagerJoined: 2008

The most rewarding part of my job is enriching the lives of those who live here and being a part of their family; making special memories with residents and their families; marking special occasions and celebrating milestones.

My colleagues at Shaw have been nothing but supportive and shown a great deal of encouragement throughout my career progression. There is always further training available if you wish to and I highly recommend Shaw to anyone looking for a career in care with opportunities to progress to various roles.

In 2008 Wan Joined Mill River Lodge in Horsham as a team leader (previously working as a support worker for another company) with hours to suit around her family.

Wan moved to Hillside Lodge in Pulborough and was appointed deputy manager to cover maternity leave. In 2016, Wan moved to Burleys Wood in Crawley as acting manager. She applied for the post permanently and was successful. Was took time off to have a baby and once her maternity leave finished she started as manager at Deerswood Lodge in 2019.

During her time at Shaw, Wan has achieved her QCF level 5 in Leadership for health and social care in adults, embracing the journey of living with dementia, Coaching and Mentoring as well as level 4 Safeguarding for Leaders.

Wan has twice won a National Shaw Star award for Outstanding management contribution and she was also recently featured as ‘Manager of the Month’ in a trade publication, Care Home Professional.

Jackie Monk
Jackie MonkJob Title:Unit ManagerJoined: 2005

Jackie joined Shaw when they took over from West Sussex in 2005 and was part of the team that moved into a brand new purpose-built care home in Horsham. Jackie started working in care in 1993 as a support worker initially because it fitted around her child care needs but it must have been a good choice because 30 years on she is still in the care industry. Jackie was promoted to Team leader and has worked in several of the Shaw homes within the region taking on various roles such as being seconded to Deputy Manager. Jackie managed a busy and thriving day centre at Forest View in Burgess Hill enriching the lives of elderly people who were living with Dementia. The daycare service was a lifeline to many who lived alone in the community. Sadly the Day Centre closed during the Pandemic. Jackie was asked if she would like to take the role of Unit Manager at Deerswood Lodge. Jackie is now the unit manager on the residential floor.

Jackie has always enjoyed whatever role she has been asked to do but being the Unit Manager at Deerswood is by far the most enjoyable and rewarding despite the many challenges this role can bring. Jackie loves being able to make a difference in people's lives and helping them transition from living in the community to coming into care. Jackie also enjoys building relationships with residents' families and friends she finds this an important part of the role as they are entrusting their loved ones' care to us.

Jackie said “ I am proud to work for Shaw Healthcare and feel valued as an employee and I am proud to be a part of the Deerswood Team and the lovely feedback we receive from the residents and their families as we strive to provide a home from home environment for all of our residents.

Also, in the same year, he completed the training to become a manual handling instructor.
