  • Bilney Hall Care Home, Dereham
Bilney Hall offers a splendid environment for gracious living. The Hall dates back to the 19th century yet its luxurious facilities are very much 21st century. Generous single rooms, all with en-suite facilities, are tastefully decorated and provide residents with the necessary facilities for a quality life in later years. The Home provides residential care for frail elderly residents and has separate wings for those with dementia. Although all rooms are fully furnished, staff encourage residents to bring with them items of furniture and personal possessions so that their room can be a true home from home.

Bilney Hall is situated in the picturesque village of East Bilney, just a few miles from the market towns of Dereham and Fakenham. Set in six acres of extensive grounds, residents can relax in the stunning walled garden and wooded parkland which surround the home allowing them to really enjoy this haven within the beautiful Norfolk countryside.

Care staff are trained to the highest standards, using an internal training programme, and chosen not only for their skills but also for their warmth, friendliness and caring attitude. They are on hand around the clock to provide professional care that respects the rights and dignity of the individual. The emphasis placed on high quality staff was recently rewarded when the company received ‘Investor in People’ accreditation.

They regularly assess each resident so that they can be sure their needs are met and supply specialised equipment if required. An optician, dentist, and chiropodist visit by appointment, and the in-house hairdressing salon provides all the usual services plus manicures and hand massages. The catering staff provides delicious meals and snacks throughout the day, as well as special dishes for those with particular dietary requirements.

Dad was only at Bilney Hall Care Home for a few months but during that time, he had complex and changing care needs. The management and staff were very responsive and proactive in ensuring his stay was as comfortable and pleasant as was possible, always going the extra mile to support Dad and our family.
Thanks to all staff for helping us through this difficult time.

My cousin's need to enter a care home came suddenly and the management and staff at Bilney Hall Care Home have made her transition from living independently to being in a care home a smooth one. They have continually shown her kindness and support and have facilitated her requests as far as possible,
often going out of their way to do so. The building is attractive and rooms are well-equipped, with pleasant and restful décor, and are suited to the needs of the resident. The grounds are well laid out and residents enjoy sitting outdoors in good weather. My cousin has now been at Bilney Hall for just over three months and she has settled in well, which is a great relief to us as her relatives.

Although my dad was only with you for two months, from the start, I was given reassurance and this continued throughout his stay, always willing to make changes to accommodate Dad and his needs and helping me with everything from understanding his behaviour to providing a supportive cuppa. I can't thank
you enough for going the extra mile and being with me through this difficult and uncertain time.
Reply from Nikki Shaw, Home Manager at Bilney Hall Care HomeThank you for these lovely comments. I feel honoured to have been involved with your dad's care. I will pass the comments on to the team who cared for him.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
Their understanding, patience and kind manner have always been apparent with my grandmother and other residents when we visit.
The care staff who support my grandmother have, over a relatively short period of time, established very caring relationships with her.
She often tells me about them individually
and also how comforting they can be when she feels a little low.
The communication between myself and the home is sufficiently detailed to provide peace of mind and I feel very comfortable that my grandmother is receiving a high standard of care.
The managerial staff have excelled in listening carefully to my grandmother and going that extra mile to cater for sometimes unusual demands and wishes.
My grandmother's physical health, mobility and cognition have all seen an improvement now she is receiving the attention and care someone experiencing dementia and Alzheimer's requires.
This overall improvement is testament to the care and understanding my grandmother is receiving and I am very happy that she is settling in well.

Bilney Hall has been Mum's home for over three years during which she has always been treated with great care and respect. She is not at times the easiest person to care for so as a family we value greatly the care and empathy given to her by all staff.
That empathy and understanding is extended to
our family - thank you all.

This is one of the most welcoming care homes I have ever visited. Everyone has a smile and gives a warm welcome to visitors. The staff are always happy to chat about my cousin's health in regards to how she is. If I phone, the staff are so supportive, and I'm always given the opportunity to chat with
a senior member of staff. The home is clean and safe, and there is a lovely atmosphere. Thank you, everyone, for the care you are providing. My cousin always looks clean and comfortable and appears peaceful.

Our cousin has been in Bilney Hall Care Home since the middle of June. We have always found the staff to be caring and kind. Nothing is too much trouble and they always have time to update us, to listen to us and explain things.
They are always kind and caring with our cousin and treat her with dignity
and respect.
There was just one occasion when she first went into Bilney when one of the male members of staff was very short and sharp with her. This was reported and nipped in the bud. They were very busy that day.
The only, very slight negative is that the room is slightly on the small side but there is a hospital bed in there. It looks like some rooms are bigger. This really isn't a problem though.
Reply from Nikki Shaw, Home Manager at Bilney Hall Care HomeThank you for this review. We try to deal with any concerns at the time and I am glad you have found this to be the case. I have an open-door policy and am keen to speak to relatives and residents whenever they feel it is needed.

My father has been at Bilney Hall Care Home for over eighteen months now and I highly recommend this residential care home. When he first went to Bilney Hall, he was very poorly and my sisters and I did not think that he was long for this world. We cannot praise the manager and staff highly enough for
the care that he has received and the turn-around in his well-being. We know they really care and that has been backed up by independent feedback from other healthcare personnel we have spoken to. We were very lucky to have found a place for him there.

My uncle has almost been a resident for two years at Bilney Hall. In that time, he has I believe been taken care of in an exemplary manner. In particular with his medication, involving care staff and the mental health team to ensure his best health. The communication from BH is excellent and as a deputy,
I am duly informed of any issues/concerns. The activities are varied and give great pleasure to my uncle, despite his physical ability he enjoys the stimulation. The food is good. The care team are fantastic, friendly, caring and especially his designated two carers.

It is a very good care home. The staff are caring and friendly.
The care home is bright and cheerful, and my mum feels safe there.
Mum came from a different care home that said she would never get up. This care home has had her up every day.

My mother was at Bilney Hall Care Home for over a year. She had Alzheimer's. Communication with Bilney throughout was excellent - their advice and compassion were outstanding. My mother settled well and was always treated with great kindness and respect. As were we, her children. We could drop by and
visit when and as often as we wanted. Her room and common areas were always impeccable - most importantly, we feel her last year she had expert care, comfort and love. We are very grateful.

The transition from the family home to a care home is a difficult one for the parent and the family; you are left feeling guilty and wondering if you are doing the right thing. In our case, we found the right place at the right time. From the outset, the manager guided us with professionalism and empathy,
and with her clinical background, managed my parent's complex medical needs. The carers were always kind, compassionate and empathetic. The administrative staff are hard-working and helpful. We were reassured that our parent was safe, respected and well cared for. Thank you to all of the staff at Bilney.

Mum has been at Bilney Hall Care Home for eighteen months and has settled in well. She now refers to it as her home. All the staff we have met are lovely and Mum is always saying how caring they are. We, as a family, know she is safe and well cared for. My only criticism is the standard of furniture
is poor with the wood effect finish peeling off. Also, the lack of places to stand things, like photographs which have to stand on the windowsill and repeatedly get knocked off and broken. Overall, I would say that the care home is excellent.

Mum seems to have settled in well although she does have her 'days off' from time to time! The only thing that we worry about is how often people (residents) enter her room and go through her things and the fact that her ensuite is used to store incontinence pads - thus reducing her privacy, All the
staff are very kind and nothing seems to be too much trouble.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.796)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.796) out of 10 for Bilney Hall Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 29 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.796 for Bilney Hall Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (276 Excellents x 5) + (55 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 338 Ratings = 4.796
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Bilney Hall Care Home is based on 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 64 registered maximum number of service users is 12.8, which has been reached with 29 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
