I was welcomed at the secure entry. Given an update on my mother-in-law ailments and behaviour. I was also asked for my personal feedback on her. This all made me feel that her well-being was monitored and important.
Tea, coffee and cake were brought up to her room in a friendly manner and the staff
member glanced around and noticed something out of place and dealt with it. Spoke again to a staff member on leaving for advice. Felt reassured and pleased.

Have found the staff at Malden House to be very friendly, caring and professional. They show real care for the residents which is evident when you see them interact with the residents we have always been made to feel extremely welcome.
My father-in-law is a new resident but has settled very well and
is happy to be there at this time in his life.

My mother is registered blind (can only see blurred shapes through a tunnel) and naturally this move to a new "home" has been frightening and harrowing for her and a worrying time for her family. Because of this, the management, staff and carers have and are doing their utmost to help Mum adjust and
to have her feel safe and secure and bring about a feeling of wellbeing and happiness. They also believe in constant open lines of communication with the relatives, which is so reassuring.

I have found the staff very friendly and welcoming - there is always a cup of tea/coffee waiting! My friend/resident seems very happy with you and tells me the food is very good and the care is excellent.
I did have to wait at the front door for several minutes, however, before it was opened (cold
day too!)
I like the various places to sit and talk with my friend, conservatory, dining room, her room, the garden.

My father has been a resident at Malden House since mid-2016 and I have been very happy with the care he has received. The staff go out of their way to mark and celebrate all the events of the year eg Bonfire night, Hallowe'en, Wimbledon tennis, by decorating the communal rooms and involving the residents
and their relatives and friends in the process. This makes for a very warm and friendly atmosphere which is also stimulating for the residents. Indeed, whenever you visit, you get a warm welcome into this kind and caring community.
I'm grateful that my lovely father is in such good hands.

First impressions of Malden House was like a cosy, welcoming house. It is good to see the residents mix in well and the carers are all pleasant and attentive to their needs. Also, I appreciate the fact the relatives are always welcome to share meals and activities etc. On the whole, I am very pleased
that this home was one of my choices.

I have been so pleased with the warmth of care from all the care workers at the home. My mother in law has been a resident at Malden House for over two years and has settled so well. It is such a caring environment that she felt at home almost immediately and has found a new spirit of life, all credit
to the extreme attention to the care needs of all residents. Such a good residents 'home'.

I only have immense praise for all the staff at Malden House; my mother is so happy there and she feels loved and cherished, never patronised. The home is kept very clean and comfortable and every effort is made to make the residents feel that they are in their own home with the benefit of having other
people to converse and have fun with as well as knowing their well-being is being totally taken care of. I have total admiration and trust for and in them. Thank you so very much.

Malden House is a homely, welcoming, dementia home. The staff are friendly caring and courteous. The home did need a freshen up as it was looking tired but recently the new paint and blinds have brightened up the home.

My mother has been a resident at Malden House since September 2015. As I live in France my sister had the traumatic experience of overseeing the transfer of our mother from her home where she had lived for two years since being unable to take care of herself in her own flat. I was so happy to hear how
well the staff care for her. How they entertain the residents with games activities and garden parties. The residents are encouraged to eat together in a homely cosy dining room and how bedroom can be decorated and personalised. The staff are friendly and helpful, but never over familiar.

My mother was cared for by Malden House from March 2015 until she sadly passed away in July 2015. At all times my mother was treated with great dignity and respect by all the staff. They were very supportive to us a family through this very difficult time. During my visits I observed the staff with
other residents during their activities and meal times. The staff would all be smiling and engaging with the residents. Thank you Malden House.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.814)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.814) out of 10 for Malden House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 26 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.814 for Malden House is calculated as follows: ( (250 Excellents x 5) + (46 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 301 Ratings = 4.814
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Malden House is based on 26 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 29 registered maximum number of service users is 5.8, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2025

Originally from Devon, I returned after spending 25 years living in Canada. A large focus of my career has been in senior operations in luxury hotels and then transitioned and trained into Social care and Retirement living sector. I love mentoring and coaching teams. I find that working with our residents and supporting their lives is very fulfilling. I am proud of each team I work with and bringing all aspects of the home together to create a wonderful home for our residents with exceptional care.

Hartford Care is a progressive company that I wanted to be part of. It holds values that resonate with me personally. I am pleased to lead the team at Maldon House which is a CQC ‘outstanding’ home. When I first came to Malden House I was met with warmth, laughter and a truly vibrant community. There are endless activities and engagement with the team is so prevalent. I have already enjoyed getting to know the residents and team. It is lovely being part of the Sidmouth Community which is very supportive of Malden House.

My name is Gabrielle, but better known as Gabby. I have worked in care since 1992 and can honestly say I have enjoyed many parts of this rewarding profession.

I have performed many roles and each one has brought different things to the table. It has meant that I have had the privilege of meeting and caring for so many people from different walks of life, different characters and different concerns.

I have worked at Malden House for thirteen years. I feel honoured that I have reached the point where I can support as Deputy Manager alongside Tabitha our Manager.

We understand what a difficult transition it is for elderly people, some with dementia to move into a care setting but this extends to the families too. We aim to support all.

I feel privileged to work in such a caring home and I feel honoured to share the experiences and lives of our ladies and gentlemen who have done so much for us and even the country as a whole.
